Midland Gate Shopping Centre

My old stomping ground has now become my new stomping ground Having grown up in the Swan Valley area, I’ve seen Midland Gate grow from strength to strength. Recently relocated to the area in early 2015, MG is relaxed, safe and friendly. From your usual grocery shops, to The Body Shop, MG houses the best Target and San Churro’s I’ve seen in this state. Ace Cinemas is on the upper level, so after a day of shopping and eating yummy food, relax with a movie.

10 years in the Midland area has let us watch MG grow from a run down sensless shopping experience into a pretty well set out, big, airy shopping centre. The big 3 are always handy Kmart, target and big w. As well as the 2 major grocery stores.
The food court is nicely organized.
The addition of Honey Birdette Ohh la laa! And a plethora of other great stores is wonderful.
If Myers or David Jones moved into Midland I’d probably never have to shop anywhere else.
My only real issue is the roads around the shopping precinct in Midland, especially on a Saturday can be so blocked that I do my best to avoid MG altogether!

This place is pretty crap, it’s always full of low class people and those people that try to sell you stuff in the halls (the one where you have to pretend like you’re in a rush so they won’t try to talk to you…) but it does have a few quality stores, it provides the essentials Target, Big W, Coles, as well as a few bakeries and clothing stores such as Miami Bakehouse, Valley Girl, Body, Dotti. It’s quite large (for Perth) and has a few good stores that surround it it also supplies a theatre and parking. But generally there are stores that are just repeated there’s like 5 bakery things like 4 book stores and they’re always empty, like get some stores that will do good also there’s like 3 supermarkets, and like 4 of those strange shops that sell like gargoyles and creepy statuses… I don’t know it’s weird. Enjoy.

I hadn’t been out to Midland Gate for many years. I had been told how it was so much better than it used to be, which was dirty, dark and dingy. I decided to go and check it out.
It definitely looks better than it used to, with lots of white, high ceilings and natural light. Like all shopping centres in Perth in recent times, it has been extended so it is huge compared to what it used to be.
It is one of the few shopping centres in Perth that has all big 3 of the department stores — Big W, Kmart and Target. Which is great if you shop their sales catalogs. It has both Coles & Woolworths Supermarkets, a Bakers Delight and then the normal slew of speciality stores. It could do with a bit more of a range of things though. If you are a local this place is probably pretty handy. But I don’t think it is really a destination shopping centre, with people coming from far and wide.

Midland Gate was refurbished in a few years ago, unfortunately for the pleasant people of the foothills and surrounding area, to no great avail.
The refurbishment promised an array of new stores promising to indulge those with a fashion fetish.
Granted, there are a handful of new fashion retailers including your suburban shopping centre faves such as Portmans and Dotti but the list stops short. The extensions needed to include a few more boutiques mandatory for prospective punters to enjoy a pleasant perusal. Sportsgirl? Withchery? E-​Sprit? Where oh where art thou?
And although there are new shops and, indeed a whole new section, nothing jumps out and grabs the wistful shoppers whimsy.
The centre’s promoters also boasted a brand new Cineplex. Said Cineplex has arrived, however, doesn’t command the grandeur or majesty of its northern suburb counterparts.
Gold class is a sadly second rate experience and the Cineplex is often a sight for sore eyes, the weary carpet littered with copious amounts of popcorn and movie paraphernalia. It’s saving grace is the $ 10 movie tickets available to all those lucky souls with an Ace card. The card is free with every adult movie ticket purchase and well worth its weight in gold.
Summary: Even after Midland Gate’s much publicised and promoted facelift it remains as ever; the functional, never phenomenal.
