I love stumbling upon an ethnic grocer that I haven’t been to before – it’s like travelling without leaving your own city. Onan Global Goods in the very African community of Moorooka sells lots of crazy foreign foods as well as a good range of pantry staples. Whilst not my cup of tea, some of the more foreign products include dried shrimp, spicy sauces, beef jerky, canned fish and other dried animal products whose origins I couldn’t figure out… Whilst not accustomed to using such ingredients in my cooking, I would, however, go there to buy basics like flour and dried lentils. They sell a few of the lesser known grains and pulses that can’t be found in supermarkets and prices are reasonable. Behind the counter, there’s also a range of toiletries and cosmetics, mostly geared towards those with African skin and hair. Even if just looking, it’s fun to step outside your own familiar culture and check out something different.
