Thank you for taking the time to visit our Mosman restaurant website, Afous «The Perfume of Life». Restaurateur, Omar Majdi and the Afous staff would like to welcome you to Afous to arouse all of your senses! We have opened our doors in the beginning of July 2012. We are located at 1⁄81 Parriwi Rd, Spit Bridge Mosman on the water with stunning views of the Middle Harbour.

About the perfume of life ~Afous~

Our concept is fusion of Moroccan and Spanish fine dining, to bring some of the historical «Moor» heritage back to life! «Afous» means a «hand» in the Berber tribe in Morocco. The hand in our logo symbolizes the five senses: Taste, Smell, Vision, Touch and Sound. You can expect delicious, aromatic, sensual (yet casual) fine dining.

Moroccan-​Spanish fusion has landed in Sydney

From the restaurateur who brought us Mosquito Bar, Dar Essalem Casablanca, Out of Africa, Tajine and, most recently, Souk in the City, comes Afous. The collective culinary vision of Omar Majdi and head chef Bouaza ELfahim, this new Mosman tapas restaurant seamlessly blends Moroccan cuisine with the traditional flavors’ of southern Spain.

Born in Morocco and raised in the kitchens of Casablanca, owner Omar arrived on Australian shores in 1987. «I’ve had the pleasure for the past 23 years to introduce to Sydney siders to the tantalizing aromas of Moroccan cuisine,» he said.

Following the runaway success of his previous establishments and with a quarter century of experience under his belt, his unique fusion borrows the very best of both worlds; the sensual and aromatic flavors’ of North Africa and the sumptuous, savory style of Southern Spain. A Fous replaces a long standing, but ultimately failed fish restaurant. That predates my experience, and only know A Fous here on the end of the Spit — just before the bridge.
Let’s start with the owner: he is the most wonderful, gracious and hospitable host I’ve ever met. His opening line is «welcome to my home» and it’s all good from there. Each time I’ve been here (3 times in all), I have just asked him to choose the dishes and keep them coming until we say «enough». Given this is a Moroccan tapas kind of place (whatever that is?), it’s more «ca suffit» or «hallas» with my best French or Arabic accents, respectively. Food is varied and delicious and small enough so you can try many things.
BYO and bring your good stuff to go with the meal. No corkage fee, and they will keep whatever you want chilled until you’re ready to go. For example, one time we dropped off our wine and beer before heading out on a boat. They happily held it in their fridge for us until dinner.
Last good thing is that A Fous is really not that expensive, especially if you bring your own beverages. All you can eat (see above!) was about $ 170 for 2 couples. That’s first rate for an elite eat here in Mosman.

Owner Omar Majdi and his team are so passionate about this place and it is reflected in the food. They used to run Souk in Surry Hills before moving to The Spit about two years ago.
It’s a mix of Spanish and Moroccan style tapas plates. On a recent visit we let our waiter surprise us with a selection of plates — including pan fried haloumi, meatballs, garlic prawns and a seafood tagine. The zataar bread is also incredible.
Desert included figs with marscopone, citrus polenta cake and the most incredible Moroccan tea.
The Moroccan brew is a fragrant blend of green tea and fresh mint leaves, (with rose blossom water and brown sugar) made in one of those ornate silver teapots. It’s poured from a great height into patterned glass vessels with barely a splatter.

We went here on a Sunday evening after reading consistently good reviews on trip advisor and Unilocal.Maybe it was a slow day or just our bad luck, the place was empty had a stale smell and we were the only people at 7:30pm on Sunday. Not letting that deter us we ordered some tapas to see if we should order a main. Sadly none of the dishes deliver on presentation or taste. The tortilla and lamb was tasteless and needed more flavour. The chicken Bastille was very good though and had flavour. Service is faultless with wait staff very courteous and friendly but was disappointed with the food.

Afous is an absolute gem, was recommended here by sister, had dinner with my boyfriend then returned the next week with my family. The restaurant décor is beautiful and the crowd is a real mix, I saw couples having a romantic dinner, families and big groups all enjoying their meal.
Tucked away near the Spit Bridge it features water views in an intimate atmosphere. The service is friendly, geniune and professional and they helpful with recommendations. The menu is concise but everything is done well. We had the crab felafel, chicken and leek croquettes, lamb kofta, halumi and rocket salad, paella, beef cheeks and he dessert tasting platter and could not find any fault. The food is authentic, fresh and delicious and the staff help pace the meal well. The beef was especially good, it cut like butter and featured a wine glaze, the rose water rice pudding was also a highlight.
Afous is really an experience, the food is made fresh to order so enjoy some wine or a cocktail and soak in the atmosphere. Enjoyed both dinners and will be back soon!
