I go here when walking to Taronga Zoo with one thing on my mind. The mini-​chocolate cupcakes. They’re the perfect size to pop in your mouth and they pretty much melt without chewing; meaning you suck one without betraying the fact that you’re eating it. Very handy if you have a kid who wants to eat yours. Only the rustle of the paper bag gives it away.
Little else in the shop appeals sadly, though it is a true local bakery and deserves to be supported just for that.

Oh, if only I needed more cake.
Unlike many ‘bought’ cakes, the ones at Hanna’s really do look as if someone out the back has just whipped them up in the Mixmaster. Icing colours are not too lurid, and there’s no attempt to conceal flavour behind mounds of unnecessary sugar.
Savoury options aren’t far behind either — this is where we pick up our weekly Saturday sourdough, and yummy filled pastries for a post-​sport snack.
A side area at Hanna’s is available to eat-​in, and there is the obligatory coffee machine, but neither really grab me — I’ll stick to the traditional baked goods, and sneak in a Smartie cupcake for our God-​son.
