It’s one of those student friendly places and friendly to the wallet. Really nice and cosy Japanese looking vibe as soon as you walk in. Staff are really friendly too, you can get a nice decent meal eg bento box for less than $ 10. My favourites are the oyako don and chicken ramen !

Easily accessible, wide range of choices, great service and easy on the wallet — what isn’t there to like?! Tan Po Po is one of the mainstays of Mount Lawley. With the emergence of franchises, fad dining and over priced restaurants Tan Po Po is one of my favourite places on the strip that I hope never disappears/changes. The only reason it is not 5 star is because you probably won’t have the best Japanese of your life. The chicken katsu curry is more rice and curry sauce rather than chicken but a filling meal in Perth with good flavours for $ 8.95 I can forgive Tan Po Po for lacking in the chicken department.

I’ve been a customer for nearly years. Back when it was in the old lain way. Still the best simple Japanese place in Perth. Each time I have the Teriyaki fish. It’s the same. Fresh fish each time. Love it. If you haven’t been, cone down. Sushi is made to order — so always fresh.

This use to be one of my fav places to go for ma’s Japanese ramen and sushi. Went there today and didn’t feel the love in the food. Sashimi looked a mess, takoyaki balls microwaved and actually I don’t know what wasn’t microwaved. Quite disappointed in how this place has lost itself. Oh well time to move on!

Cheap and tasty Ma and Pa Japanese. Consistently good. Sometimes a little slow with service but it’s worth the wait.

Least expensive takeaway sushi I have found in Perth. Was the sushi out of this world? No. But it satisfied a craving without breaking the bank or requiring a full sit-down meal. The takeaway did take a bit long considering how few people were there when we ordered.

This is a very small place to eat yet a nice one to go when your wallet is running empty and you’re in need of having authentic Japanese food — you’ve come to the right place. Otto-San and Okaa-San are the ones cooking in the kitchen, the little ones stay at the front serving us. The menu is not a lot but that’s one thing that makes it easy for you to choose. My favourite one would be «Teriyaki Katsu Bento Box» and«Chicken Ramen Noodles» — the chicken tastes like KFC, no lie. You only need to take out $ 10 for this food, because that’s how much that is. The size for me is good enough for lunch and dinner, but not for my boyfriend who eats a lot. He sees it as an entrée, but that might be because he eats like a horse in general. I won’t recommend going here in the weekends due to its high volume of customers in such small place(unless you feel like being lazy at home and just watch tv, you can get a take-away). But if you walk around Beaufort St busy street and you feel hungry, make this your first option before you go somewhere else. Itadakimasu!

It’s crazy to think that I’ve been coming to Tanpopo for more than 10 years now. It’s even crazier to think that besides moving from the arcade across the street, the rest of Tanpopo(including the food, atmosphere and price) has managed to stay almost the same throughout those 10 or so years. Unlike the rest of Mount Lawley, Tanpopo is not an expensive, fancy, gourmet hipsters paradise. It’s a simple, cheap, yet filling student dream. Recently a craving for Japanese saw me take a friend for a quick dinner after a long day of work, and I am glad to say she enjoyed her Tanpopo experience. She ordered Chicken Katsu Don $ 7.30, Edamame $ 2.50, Sashimi set $ 8.80, Miso $ 1.65 and grabbed a bottle of San Pellegrino. I grabbed 4 pieces of California sushi roll $ 3.20, Miso $ 1.65 and Chicken Katsu Curry and Rice $ 8.50. We were starving and happy that we didn’t have to wait to get served and that the food began to come out after 10 minutes of so. Our table was a rocky beast, but when you’re getting change back from $ 20 for dinner, I don’t think you can go complaining about plastic chairs or unfriendly furniture. As I suspected, most food was tasty and filling, especially for the price. When it comes to Tanpopo I recommend sticking to the hot dishes, as they seem to give you a lot more flavour and bang for your buck than sushi’s or sashimi, which seemed to lack just a little in flavour. As I have said before though, it is not a fancy place. The food is not going to cause you to drop your jaw, take out your phone and post images of your meal on Facebook. But if you’re hungry, don’t mind the simple surroundings/lack of atmosphere and/or need a good feed on a budget Tanpopo is still a great place to visit. After all, I’m still coming back after 10 years so they must be doing something right.

The staff don’t say much but they do smile. They seem like they are working hard to get the orders out quickly. We waited over 30 minutes for our meals which were teriyaki fish and udon noodles. We saw other people that ordered after us receive their meals before us and we tried to get the attention of the waitress but she wasn’t paying much attention. We weren’t sure whether she took our order. We eventually got her attention and she was apologetic. We received our mains about 5 minutes after and to be honest it was worth the wait for the price! They would have got an extra star if the meals were delivered on time, but I think it was an honest mistake that rarely happens. My tip is if your meal takes longer than 10 minutes, alert the waitress!

The cheapest and one of the best Japanese places in Perth! The terri beef is different to what is usually served but in a good way, the little side salads are to die for, plain lettuce is made delicious with some kind of magical dressing. Sushi is made fresh and it always great. Squid salad is another winner! The little old japanese lady is just so cute you want to come back and awwww at her while eating your great food. Everything is super cheap, no meal is over $ 15. Its been a while since Ive been but excited to go back this weekend! Closed Sundays.

TANPOPO I LOVEYOU! I frequent this restaurant as it’s so cheap and yummy! Love the Chicken Teriyaki double meat for only $ 7.25! You can also get any Bento Box’s for only $ 9.50! And just because it’s cheap does not mean that the quality of food is bad, the food here is always fresh, is prepared quickly and is just plain delicious! If you haven’t visited this little Japanese restaurant yet I highly recommend that you do ASAP!

This is one of the best, most affordable Japanese restaurants I’ve been to! It is extremely cheap for Perth prices and the food is delicious! You can get a chicken teriyaki for as cheap at $ 6.20! I’ve tried many of the dishes here and they have all been good. The place is quite small so sometimes you do have to wait awhile to get your food, but its worth it. Take away can also solve this problem. Yum I love Tan Po Po and am always craving a meal from there!

I love Tan Po Po Cheap, fresh & authentic Japanese food. $ 9 for a bento box including chicken teriyaki, salad, prawns & miso soup is a bargain Would suggest ordering takeaway as the restaurant itself is quite small and cramped. The service is also not the best however that’s not what you come here for. Great for a cheap bite to eat. Make sure you check first if they are open as they have some strange opening hours. :)

I love little Tan Po Po and the hardworking team that run it. The food is always tasty, cheap and consistent. The service, wait time and cleanliness of the restuarant can be a little hit and miss but you cannot help but smile.

Tan Po Po used to be a tiny little mainly take away Japanese restaurant, tucked away in a little arcade in Beaufort street. It only had the capacity to seat around 12 people but due to it’s popularity has moved and expanded, which is great news for Tan Po Po lovers. The new venue is more access able and ideal for groups dining in and easy to find on busy Beaufort street. The food I believe is still the same tasty quality and still reasonably priced. With menu items like octopus balls for as little as $ 3, there is also the option of getting double meat if you are extra hungry. I love this place and recommend it to all Japanese food lovers.

I used to frequent Tan Po Po regularly when it stood opposite the road from where it is now, in somewhat more traditional oriental surrounds(looking very much like one of those faded pink flaky-walled dim sum houses in Northbridge, actually). The recent incarnation is way more relaxed in ambience and minimalist in design, looking somewhat more like a fast food takeaway outlet. Despite some paper lanterns resting on high shelves on one side of the restaurant, and some bowls behind a display cabinet emblazoned with blossom designs, there’s not much in the way of aesthetics to give away a sense of Japanese authenticity. Still, the food is very good, particularly for its price point. On a recent visit I tucked into a bento box of beef teriyaki, complete with a couple of ebi tempura(prawns), some ginger, edamame(those salty green bean-like thingies), a mini cabbage salad, white rice, and a miso soup. Amazing value for just $ 9.80, and it’s no wonder so many student-types who might be on a budget frequent this place. I admire Tan Po Po for not taking advantage of Mt Lawley’s major hospitality reputation and for keeping its prices low and quality high. The service is quick, the staff are sweet and friendly, and any dish here is a meal in itself, really.

Tanpopo is a Mount Lawley institution. I’ve been taking advantage of their $ 7 double chicken Teriyaki deal since my High School days. Sure the place is generally in a state of disarray, but that’s only reflective of their popularity, not their attitude toward customer service. So there’s a little to be desired in terms of speed and cleanliness, but you can’t say these guys aren’t hardworking. Once at the end of a busy day of service, I saw Mr Tanpopo don a suit and tie and scurry off to a second job. Committed! Tanpopo defines cheap & cheerful. When you’re paying just $ 3 for 4 pieces of sush and in the heart of happening Mt Lawley, lagging service is a small negotiation. Tanpopo ought to be applauded for not jacking up the prices in order to meet the skyrocketing rent prices in this area. Tanpopo have remained true to their cut-price reputation and their customers have showed them that same loyalty.

I have a soft spot for Tan Po Po, I have to open on this note. I really do. They were once a tiny store hidden away in Mt. Lawley, the tables were always littered with plates but that was okay, because they had the best, cheap double meat Chicken Teriyaki around. Tan Po Po moved across the road, understandably to get more exposure and have a little more space. The staff are still mostly the same, as I believe it to be a family business. The double meat teriyaki is still cheap and still delicious. The rest of the menu is nice and cheap too, with some hit and miss items on the menu(avoid the Chicken Karaage, it’s very dry). My problem is the service. The tables are still always littered with plates, but now that the business is exposed and booming, it’s not cute any more. It’s cluttered and messy and uncomfortable. Worse still is the waiting time. I feel I can safely say that the average wait time for a basic 2 person order there is about 20 minutes. Pretty frustrating when you just popped down for a quick take away bite to eat. Don’t get me wrong, the food is good, tasty and cheap. Definitely worth eating there, but just be willing to wait.
