I’m giving this place 5 stars, because for what it is(fried chicken and beer) it’s excellent. But don’t expect anything fancy. It’s the perfect place for a casual bite with good friends. The dishes are all aimed to be shared. The fries are amazing… but they’re pretty heavy for a side. But don’t go there for a first date because eating delicious Korean-fried chicken is not pretty. If it’s a hot day, it’s not a great place to eat. But you could always get takeaway and walk to the harbour.

It is what it is. Fried chicken and beer. If you’re expecting more then you might be disappointed, however, I arrived in Newcastle and typed fried chicken in to google and this came highly recommended. We went on a Wednesday night and it was quiet. The beer selection was ample for such a small venue and the food was at our table in less than 10 minutes after ordering. It was amazing! We had the sweet chilli and citrus infused chicken. It was so amazing. Probably not a first date venue though. While looking around I noticed a bunch of games in the back corner, including cards against humanity. I know is thoroughly enjoy that but other customers might not like to hear it being played. All in all a great night! I can’t wait to come back for lunch and compliment the chicken with the 2L beer!

Pros: Experts in chicken and beer, with slight Korean or Japanese infusion at times. The place feels clean, well designed and pleasantly kooky, while still being down to earth, and not even close to chicken shop of yesteryear. The craft beers on tap are well chosen and reasonably priced(4.5 for a midi). It has elements of places I visited in Japan, where I just felt at home because they’d thought through the small things. They cater for salad folks with a few options on the menu there too, and an inappropriate card game is on the shelf. There’s also Shogi(Japanese chess) on the shelf, so perhaps my Japanese spidey senses were right on here. Cons: I’d give them five stars if they had air conditioning. There is outdoor seating, a fan, and open windows(which let occasional ocean breezes through), though where chilli-consuming body heat is high, and the place is packed, it can get a little warm. For the likes of me, this place gets a little noisy at night, where it can attract tables of twenty something guys drinking out of yardstick glasses. Still, aside from noise, the place retains a sense of respect and general sociability, rather than mere drunk shenanigans. Overall: During the day or in the afternoon, this is one of my absolute Newcastle favourites. Love the basic but still interesting food, upbeat, genuine and professional service, and down to earth roots. Let’s not forget the music(slightly Indie), which can be so hard to find in Newcastle.

Chook & Broosky keeps it simple. Their menu consists of fried chicken and beer. They have delicious flavours and sauces for the chicken and it is cooked to perfection. The beer selection is amazing; they had several craft beers and you can also order a beer tower which is great if you are going with a group of friends. They also have a shelf chock full of hot sauces, a TON of them! Great, fun place with a good vibe. I recommend with a group of friends before a night out.
