Great filter coffee, awesome breakfast, nice place to sit in the sun. Check out Sol Invictus Motorcycle over the road when you’re done

Pn a wet & windy October afternoon we blew in from Sydney at 4.00pm. Hunter St was completely deserted. Unilocal to the rescue once again. One Penny Black delighted with a slice of home baked cardamon cake and perfectly brewed coffee. Make an effort to find — not numbered & parking around the corner. I can imagine on a sunny day seated in the mall with a sour dough toastie or all day brekkie would be divine!

Hunter St is coming alive again — and One Penny Black is a good café. I stopped in here on a trip over from Perth, if there’s something we Perthians know, it’s breakfast. We have to have great breakfasts to kill time on Sundays as the shops open so late… Anyway, I had avocado on sourdough and a cappucino, both were great, and the avocado was simple and delicious, the chef didn’t faff about with it, just avo, rocket, and lemon on sourdough, with sea salt and black sesame seeds. Perfect. I’ll be back next time, that’s for sure.

I can’t work out why this doesn’t have a higher rating. It is easily the best coffee place in Newcastle and the food is ridiculous. So simple and so damn good. One Penny is family owned and run and it shows. Although it’s getting busier and busier they still strive to know people by name. Their new location(further along the mall, near Wolfe st.) has a food menu, but their specials and changing bagel/pastries are where it’s at. When it’s busy and you can’t find a seat, still take a number and just hang out on a nearby bench. They’ll see you and take your order out. Be prepared to wait for your coffee between 8−9am and your food between 11am-1pm. It’s a popular place for good reason. Well behaved dogs are welcome.

This espresso bar has recently moved location on Hunter Street. The décor is beautiful, and there is definitely a hipster vibe to it. The coffee is made with care and tastes fantastic. They also offer cold pressed coffee, which must definitely be tried if it’s available.

You know these guys are serious about coffee by their thick rimmed glasses, beanies, skinny jeans and flannelette check shirts. Or maybe that’s a dedication to a hipster lifestyle. Surround yourself with the photos of mustached-men along one wall and enjoy the Blackstar roast(Brisbane, represent!) or a selection of single origins. There’s also a great range of gluten-free toasties and brioche with ricotta, fresh banana, honey, cinnamon and almonds. When we rocked up mid-Sunday morning the place was busy but not overwhelmingly packed and our order was delivered to our table swiftly. One Penny Black may not be an official part of the Hunter Street Renew Newcastle project but they’re bringing a new flavour to the strip and I can’t wait to see what standard these guys set for the rest of the street.
