Located in the new residential developments that line the river in Newstead, Malt’s new venue, Malt Pier is in prime position for river-side dining. And in a recent interview with owner Nick Pinn he was asked why he didn’t turn this venue, with residence prices nearing 1.5million for purchase above, into a fine-dining restaurant. His answer? He wanted to see people in for meals a few times a week rather than once a month. For this alone I applaud you, Mr Pinn. But don’t let that make you think Malt Pier isn’t the same level of well thought out dining that Malt has brought Market Street diners for several years. With a more relaxed atmosphere the venue is described as a «café-bistro» and the menu reflects this. There’s breakfast and a lunch menu made up of share plates, light bites such as the steak sandwich I ordered, and then larger meals. All takes a nod to making the best of fresh and local produce. When I stopped in for lunch they’d been opened a mere two days. The marble underneath the bar(yes, there’s a very neatly stocked whiskey bar) was still shining and everything had that fresh look to it all. The staff were seamless in their service. I’m guessing have worked with the Malt team for many years. While there was an incredibly tempting wine list, I opted for an iced latte and enjoyed the steak sandwich for lunch. This isn’t your«can’t pick up with my hands» sized steak sandwich. It’s petite and manageable. It is, as it is placed in the menu, a light eat. Enough to reach satisfaction but small enough to have you walking out without fear you’re falling into a food coma. Pro Tip; take your parents here for a casual Sunday lunch by the river.
