The Waterloo Hotel happens to be one of our local pubs, but really we are pretty spoilt for choice living in Teneriffe. There are many micro-breweries, a sake bar and the amazing live music venue The Triffid all within a stones-throw however we often find ourselves at The Waterloo for a traditional sit-down pub meal. This old venue has a certain siren-song that brings us back time and time again. Part of the appeal rests in the décor of this beautiful old building. It’s exceptionally well done and it really matches the historical exterior. The place is literally soaked in Art Deco features from the most stunning staircases leading to the main upstairs area to the wood inlayed feature ceilings. I adore it from this aesthetic angle. They have managed to make a functional pub environment feel steeped in old-world charm while keeping things uncluttered and simple. This means the space works for intimate groups as well as large functions. The service is always great and the large bar is always stocked with anything you could want. The food is high quality and I can honestly say having dined multiple times on one of their busiest days of the calendar Melbourne Cup Day, the quality does not drop when there are large groups. I am particularly fond of the menu highlighting gluten free and vegetarian options. Also it’s worth mentioning that it won’t break the bank! There are options for most budgets with the most expensive meal on the dinner list coming in under $ 30. Whether it be lunch or dinner, I am always satisfied with what’s on offer at the Waterloo. The atmosphere, service, food and décor always fit the bill and the fact that it’s air conditioned make it an obvious choice.

Just stepped in a for a quick drink as we’ve never had one here. The bar staff were friendly and the taps were nice and cold. Very reasonably priced cider for this part of town. The car park is a bit tiny and there’s a construction work going on, which may deter people. The interior is quite lovely and has a bit of an American feel to it with booths as well as a pool table. There is also a comfortable smoking area outdoors(under cover) so people who choose to smoke don’t have to feel like lepers and people that don’t are comfortably indoors without any wafting cigarette smells. Defiantly a nice affordable place to have your drinks after work or heading out as its well situated at the end of Ann street in the Valley but is closer to the Teneriffe/Newstead side of town.

The Waterloo is an amazing venue. Well designed. Beautiful decorations and furnishings. You can be very comfortable there. The prices are good and the service is quite remarkable. Over all my experience there was satisfying However, the meal which I received was cold. Very cold. Where as the proportion size was decent, a cold meal was not on the cards. Chips were soggy and tasted old. Chicken was cold. Unfortunate. If they adjust that one problem I imagine it would be one of the best venues around.

The Waterloo serve up good pub grub in a pleasant enough setting. Meals were delivered quickly and prices are reasonable. I had fillet steak which was really good; my partner had grilled snapper which was fresh and tasty. Service(as it is — order at the bar style) was friendly and we’d do it again. Better than most pubs in the neighbourhood but not the gastro-pub experience we were looking for.

The Waterloo is one of the great restoration stories in Brisbane’s food, drink, and architecture scene. And not recreated as a period piece or museum, but rather as a living and contemporary expression of art deco. Getting that right is nearly impossible, but architects brand+slater have achieved it in spades. Food is more than respectable and not overpriced; drinks the same. Great range of whiskey.

The Waterloo Hotel was renovated a few years ago and now it’s a shiny, new hotel with no hint of the old seedy pub that used to stand there. The whole end of the Valley is really developing into a fancy area, I believe it’s now being referred to the Waterloo Junction and probably considers itself Newstead rather than the Valley. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and there are specials on various nights of the week. Tuesday nights are 2 for 1 pizza and pasta night. The Waterloo also offers free wireless.

When I think of watering holes and clubs in the Valley, I don’t really think of places on the outskirts with more of a tame crowd and upscale presentation standard. Alas, we have the Waterloo Hotel. It’s the kind of place that initially reminds me of a yacht club or something with its lounges and curtains and sparkling mirrors and in retrospect, I suppose a yacht club and the Waterloo have a few things in common. Both are aimed at being a little high class; both are venues where you engage in jovial banter and… well, no that’s it. I must admit, the Waterloo was a little more fancy than I had imagined. I kind of associate ‘hotels’ that are more renowned as drinking venues as being rundown and old and only still kicking because some stubborn locals won’t let it go. But walking into the Waterloo is actually quite refreshing. Cool colours welcome you inside and lead you straight to the bar(good design tactics there) and you can either walk around and enjoy the company or collapse into a lounge chair. The place was built on its current plot in 1937 and has experienced quite a bit of transformation in its life, so kudos to it for evolving into a pretty decent venue. I went here for a 21st and not only found the venue to be very easy to relax into, but I also enjoyed the bar tab privileges awarded to partygoers. Superb. Waterloo also has free WiFi! Just as a fun extra, you know.

I thought Waterloo Hotel was a relatively new establishment, until my Dad told me that it existed years ago in the same spot but it shut down with a reputation of rowdy bar brawls and seedy clientele. He went so far as to call it the«loo water» rather than the«waterloo». Well walking into Waterloo now you would never guess its previous misbehaviors. The space has been refurbished with a loungey, Italian cigar bar style feel. There are a few different section to the hotel. There’s the restaurant, then a seating area around the corner where there’s often live music of a weekend and then there’s the lounge area on the other side with curtains that can be pulled across to make your own private function room. The design is very cool, but the different sections make it a bit confusing. Is it a lounge, a bar, a restaurant or a music venue? Or all of those things? The seams in the design are pretty obvious, making it confusing as to what The Waterloo Hotel is trying to be. These things aside, when I’ve eaten there the food has been great. There’s a tapas platter option which is good when you’re with a group of people and in need of some nibblies while you have a few drinks. The bar is beautifully stocked and the staff have always been friendly. There are also function spaces available for hire. The times that I have been to the Waterloo Hotel have been great. It’s a huge space, so perfect for a big group, and has everything you need for a night out– music, booze and food.
