History

Established in 1989.

After spending 4 years living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Lucy was encouraged by Knopen Winkel (Buttons Shop) owner, Thea de Boer, to open a sister shop in Sydney. Sydney’s inner city suburb of Newtown had the same vibrancy and creative spirit as it’s Dutch counterpart, so was a perfect fit. Our buttons are sourced from around the globe, coming from every continent. Individuality is the key. From humble beginnings, the shop and collection has grown to cater for all creative types with a passion for detail.

Business Owner

Canadian born Lucy started sewing from age 5 on her mother’s treasured Singer machine, and tinkered in her father’s jewellery workshop from age 10. Her working life started as a Graphic Designer, moving on to engineering/​architecture Design Draughting, and then Jewellery Manufacture and Design. Travel found her first in Australia, then in the Netherlands, where she expanded on her experiences and found new interests. Always having a keen eye for detail, serendipity brought her to buttons.

Buttons buttons buttons! I would spend all day here, if only I had a purpose to use buttons for. Kinda makes me wish I were a crafty person. As it is I just go in and ogle.
I had a few friends DIY-​ing stuff for their weddings, so that was a good excuse to come and look. The employees let me take lots and lots of photos of their buttons so I could send them to my friends. It made me realize that there were so many buttons!
Everything is color coded, which makes it easier to find what you want. And the button styles are varied — if you need something for a kiddie project, or a more formal one, or a more naturally-​themed one, or you just want a plain button… they’ve got it all.
Come here if you need buttons. You won’t be disappointed.

This place is too cute for words! Just entering will make you swoon with the possibilities of… buttons!
Ok so buttons are about the only thing I can safely ‘sew’ — which makes this place the only real haberdashery store I can really delight in visiting.
Firstly you have to celebrate the sheer feat of organisation. All those buttons! Oh my! Then you have the wonderful staff who are happy for you to simply stand agog. But mostly this place reminded me of the film «Coraline,» where the creepy characters had buttons for eyes. Cinema and craft… now that’s a combination I can celebrate!

You guessed it… this shop sells buttons. Lots and lots and lots of buttons. Great if you’re in to dress-​making or you’ve popped a button. The shop owners are very friendly, and their passion for buttons is hard to miss. A button-lover’s heaven, of course, but it’s also a great place to go and have a look round if you’ve got a spare few minutes in Newtown. It really is a typically quirky and characterful shop.

I always feel like there should be a wizard behind the counter. There’s something very OCD-​inducing about gazing upon thousands of colour coded little containers, like there’s someone trapped in a fairy-​tale out the back condemned to separate 100,000 tiny buttons into their exact groupings until they work out their gnomish-slavemaster’s name.
My aunt, a long time collector, has taught me a great deal about the art and history of the button — actually one of the most collected items in the world — I can tell my vegetable ivory from my casein, my butterscotch bakelite from my Czech glass. This wonderful little store is a jewelbox filled with such treasures, and great staff happy to help with that vital colour-​matching dilemma. Changing the buttons on an outfit is a really easy way to make something truly yours, and the craftsmanship and detail in some of these little gems are remarkable. Kids love the wacky shaped ones too (they’re actually called ‘goofies’, seriously). And to whoever’s out the back, try ‘Rumpelstilzkin’, it’s worked before.

What a magical little place! Having been born with an almost unhealthy color coding obsession, I was attracted to this little shop due to the walls of rainbow colored buttons. I stepped in to take a closer look and found myself completely transfixed in some sort of trance. I suppose I was mentally sifting through my wardrobe and imagining everything I could re-​button.
Among my favorite were the kiddie buttons. Nearly every shape, color and variety was represented here. Some standouts were the mini records, hamburgers, pool balls, and bicycles.
Next time you’re looking for a little wardrobe revamp, why not just switch out those cheep plastic buttons on your cardigan for some flashy, pearly, sparkly ones. Hell, I bet this shop even has ones that will cook you breakfast and sing you a merry little tune.

‘All Buttons great and small’ have an exotic collection of buttons. It’s an exclusive shop for buttons and they specialise in holding one of the best collections of buttons all over the world.
I was just shopping in Newtown when I came across this amazing shop. The way they manage their collection came another surprise to me. As you can imagine — buttons are so small and holding thousands of different types can be quite a task in itself. But they manage to do it quite efficiently. They have different tubes filled with buttons and each tube cover shows the actual button on top.
The décor of the shop speaks volumes for itself. It reflects the passion behind it. Everything is impeccably managed from simple to exotic buttons — you can find it all.
I was told that Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge and Ewan McGregor in star wars procured buttons from this shop. What an amazing collection!
