Dance Workshop

I really like this dance school because they teach some pretty novel genres of dance like Bollywood, House, Broadway Jazz and Sexy Stiletto (think Britney Spears, pre-​head shaving incident. See: «I’m A Slave For You» video).
Ashanti, who took my Stiletto class, is an energetic teacher and not to mention a hot tamale dancer.
Room for improvement at TDW — bigger floorspace (pun intended), as well as the crick in my neck and back I get the next day. They’re not really about technique and more about having fun — which is great! It just means there are no warm-​ups or cool-​downs so maybe stretch in your own time.
I recommend the Sexy Stiletto class for anyone with a bit of prior dance training and those who have ever wanted to get their inner Pussycat Doll on. So. Much. Fun.
They also recently got air con so that defientely ups the score.

I have mixed feelings about this dance school. It definitely provides a much sought after service, being the only adult dance school in Perth that I know of. Other schools run the odd adult class but are predominantly designed with children in mind.
Knowing this school specifically caters for adults I was a bit surprised with my experience at a casual contemporary class. Most of the moves were easy enough for a beginners class but the structure wasn’t appropriate.
We learned a dance and then broke into groups of four to perform in front of the class. This is really scary for first time dancers and puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on those who’ve come to simply enjoy a fun hour or so.
Although most of the moves were OK, some of them were simply painful! We were dancing on a hard wooden floor and were expected to balance on our hands and land on the insteps of our feet. Not that beginner!
They do offer a wide range of classes here including; ballet, hip hop, tap, break dancing, flamenco, jazz, contemporary and stiletto. In stiletto classes students wear said shoes and shake their groove thing to moves reminiscent of Beyonce and Pussy Cat Dolls.
Students can purchase a 6 or 10 week block of classes or turn up casually. I wouldn’t want to taint this school with my one bad experience. One of my friends does ballet lessons here on a Saturday morning and thoroughly enjoys them. Oh, and they also run Bollywood classes. That’s something I aim to try in 2012.
