Old Shanghai

Great place to crash and enjoy some asian food. Especially chinese and indian ones. Was there at new year and it’s quite easy to find a table despite its strategic location

Fast, reasonably priced, and flavoursome.
Don’t let how this place looks put you off — it may have the feel and décor of a local market food venue from the 1980’s. But what it may lack in looks is more than made up for by what you’ll find inside.
Old Shanghai has been a Northbridge staple since… well as long as I can remember. The food at any of the vendor stalls there is tasty, it’s quickly served, and a lot of stuff is cooked to order.
And there’s a wide selection of cuisine on offer, from Asian noodle soups, yum cha, Indian, and Japanese. There’s even bubble tea available for the younger kids, to go with the alcohol the parents may choose to imbibe (licensed bar is at the back).
Before you order, make sure you pick out roughly where you want to sit — especially if you’re with a group. If your item is made to order, then the staff will need to find you. And you don’t want them walking around with your sizzling szechuan beef — you want the pleasure of the smoke and sizzle right in front of you.
Personal recommendation: The curry beef noodle soup at Taste of Asia. This is my go to, especially for the winter months where I’d want something to warm me up, and maybe help loosen the sinuses if feeling a little congested.

A good place for a fast lunch.

Been here on many occasions over the past few years.
Love that there is a bar there & lots of choices for everyone’s taste. It is a great place to go that is cheap before heading out on a night out.
The last time I was there I got a veggie satay noodle. I had been craving noodles for a couple of days & had had noodles from a restaurant in the city & they did not live up to my cravings but the satay noodles definitely did. I will be back for these noodles.
It always seems to have a good crowd of people there.

This food hall is perfect for a quick & cheap meal in the heart of northbridge.
There is a large selection of Asian food vendors, a roast meat stand & a licensed bar.
Would recommend the bento boxes from Mr Samurai and the thalis from the Indian stall.
They are always delicious!
It may not be the nicest looking/​cleanest restaurant but if you and your friends can’t decide where to go there is usually something for everyone here.

Old Shanghai is the backpackers home of cheap and delicious food. The Dim Sum shop has some of the best combo’s iv seen and the dumplings are really fresh and tasty.
My favorite tho is the Indian place. Do yourself a favor and get a meat thali. Best $ 15 you’ll spend on Indian ever. Comes with an overflowing tray of 2 meat curries 2 vegetarian curries 1 Raita Yoghurt, 1 serve of gulab jamun dessert, naan bread and rice! Every curry was amazing, naan was fresh and dessert was perfectly made. Go to any other Indian restaurant and you’ll pay nearly double the price for one curry! Plus the Old Shanghai is licensed so wash it down with an icy cold beer. Happy days!

Loved this place! So much different food to offer :) i am from England and haven’t really had that much sushi… Mr. Samurai made it fresh to my liking and it was amazing!

I regret having to rate the entirety of Old Shanghai based on the experience at one of their store fronts but there’s really not much else to I can do about that.
Anyway — a few work colleagues and I headed to Old Shanghai for Friday lunch because of the variety of foods available to us. I was in the mood for some seafood noodle soup and bought it (from memory) from the «BBQ Noodle House». It wasn’t too long of a wait for my food to be ready which was probably the only real positive thing about the whole experience.
The food itself… well, when it’s advertised as «seafood noodle soup» I was of the impression that there would be seafood and noodles in a soup. I guess I was wrong. Yes, there was noodles. Yes there was soup. Yes there was seafood. Technically. 2 prawns and 2 scallops and a bit of squid. So there was the first disappointment.
The little seafood that I DID have… well firstly, the prawns tasted like they had been unwrapped from the steam dumplings that you get at dim sum and put into the soup. Secondly, the 2 pieces of scallop that was in the soup were a very brown colour. Now — I’m no marine biologist but I’m pretty sure scallops aren’t supposed to be that colour, at least not when they’re in your food. Thirdly, the piece of squid in the soup… I would have had a better experience eating the napkin.
To top it all off, there were large pieces of vegetable (carrot, broccoli and coliflower) in the seafood noodle soup. Yes, I understand that it’s entirely appropriate to have vegetarian options available — but that’s not what I asked for.
I was extremely disappointed with the food I had from that vendor today. Definitely won’t be making that mistake again.

I always have to suppress a smile when I dine here with my husband, as I remember when this first opened and someone asked me out and brought me here for our first date. I decided there and then that this relationship was never going to work after all it is just an eating hall. So we only went out on one date and that was the end of that. The irony of it all, is that I come here all the time with my husband as the food is really good and really cheap. But lets face it, it ain’t no place for a first date.
This is a great place to take the family, because how many times do you decide to get a takeaway and no one can agree on anything? well Old Shanghai has got it all, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian and Singaporean. Granted some nights the food doesn’t live up to expectations and it can be hit and miss, but you can generally tell what to go for just by looking at it.

I love asian food but I am very specific about what types I eat, some of my friends are vegetarian and others would eat an entire cow if they could. So when we can’t agree on what to eat and where to go, we can always agree on Old Shanghai because there is a little bit of everything to satisfy each of our appetites. There is even a store with fresh fruit and vegetables for juices, probably my favourite part! The only disappointment is that they don’t have a Thai store, they should certainly invest in one though. Old Shanghai is a lively atmosphere that is cheap and fun and doesn’t require the fuss of waiting for your meals in a restaurant or having trouble booking a table, definitely I place to check out on friday nights.

The largest food court in Northbridge is a hub for local, authentic cuisine. Offering Chinese, Indian, Japanese, a carvery and even a bar, it has great variety. Admittedly, some of the places have pretty average food, though Mr. Samurai, the Japanese outlet, is by far the best in show. I would suggest you avoid the food sitting in the bain-​Marie all day… but the ginger chicken is one of my favourite things to eat in all of Perth. Flavoursome, succulent chicken which retains its quality every time I’ve visited. Perhaps a little pricier than you’d expect for food court fare, but it’s totally worth it.

Old Shanghai is Northbridge’s buzzing food court, providing such a wide selection of authentic Asian cuisines that it’s hard to make your mind up what to have. There’s Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Malaysian and Singaporean and even a Western outlet if you feel like something a little less exotic. Unlike its Fremantle counterpart, Old Shangai in Northbridge doesn’t have a Thai outlet, which is sad — but it makes up for it with several different styles of Chinese cooking, including Cantonese and Dim Sum. It’s a great place to stop for a quick and affordable meal — most places do a ‘three dishes plus rice or noodles’ type deal for around $ 10, or you can select something off their extensive menus and they’ll cook it to order. I find this is the better option, as the ready-​made dishes have that unmistakable canteen-​food taste. But if you’re in a hurry, they’re tasty, filling and cheap, and there’s even a bar so you can enjoy a drink with your meal.
