Dorothy & Evelyn is as perfectly lovely as its name, selling a range of contemporary boutique labels such as IDS alongside spruced up vintage dresses, cute as can be jewellery and ephemera including some very lovely gift cards. I have to confess that I must have walked past Dorothy & Evelyn twenty times without walking in. But today, spotting the ‘Buy Two Vintage Dresses, Get One Free’ sign lodged firmly in the window, today, I finally visited Dorothy & Evelyn. A spacious affair over two levels, Dorothy & Evelyn could be a case of — Northcote — style over substance but with its clever edit of clothing in a variety of styles that somehow work together just so, Dorothy & Evelyn definitely works. Sure, I may not be a massive fan of vintage clothing that has been modernised with a raised hemline here or some new plastic buttons there, but Dorothy & Evelyn’s wares could just be the perfect first foray into vintage for those besotted with the prints and fabrics but a little scared of the — sometimes dated — cuts. I’ll definitely be returning to this little Northcote boutique for a browse.

The idea of Dorothy and Evelyn is to mingle with the cool kids who like to wear a mix of new contemporary accessories/clothes with vintage. I found that whilst they had some great stuff in store, I am always more willing to fork out a little bit more for new things. But when it comes to vintage dresses, no matter how good they are, I feel a like a fool if I’m paying more than $ 40 for it. They have a great selection on dresses. Seriously good, but I’m not going to pay $ 60 to $ 70 for them. They’ve tried to lessen the blow by having a buy two, get one free deal. Which, admittedly does make it a bit better. But unless you have a spare $ 120 lying around I can’t really justify spending that much for second hand clothes. This place is great. They have it all there; it’s just for those who have more money to throw around. The independent designers they have in stock are wonderful, and it is a good space, I would just love for those dresses to be a little cheaper!
