Marion Event Cinemas

I’ve been coming here since it first opened almost 18 years ago. Sure there’s been the odd upgrade to the upholstery and now they have the glorious wonder of gold class but the overall vibe of the place being one of fun, excitement and a few hours away from the outside world has not changed. The seats are comfortable, the sound is extraordinary and it doesn’t seem to matter where in the cinema you sit, you always seem to get a perfect view of the screen.
If you have the cash, or it’s a special treat gold class is always a little bit of decadent delight. The seats recline, you’re treated like royalty and the staff bring food and drink to you while you sit back and enjoy the movie.
Speaking of cash. that’s why event cinemas only scored 4 out of 5 stars. The average price for an adult movie ticket is $ 20 and don’t get me started on the candy bar. Despite the expense though, i can’t say I’ve ever begrudged seeing a movie at event cinemas (even if i have begrudged the actual movie).

Marion Cinemas are always good, i recently saw the new Star Wars here after seeing it in Darwin, the sound system here is far better, i could hear light shades rattling when the music and effects got really intense.
The smell of popcorn greets you as well as friendly staff at both the box office and at each wing to the cinemas as well as the candy bar, the new candy bar layout is really good if you ask me and the self-​service setup makes it quick to get what you want without having to wait for 2 – 3 counter staff to get to serving you.
Cinemas are large and the seats are comfortable, Gold Class is even better if that is your thing but the meals can be a bit pricey for what you get.

Had my first gold class experience as I won the tickets from work. It’s a fantastic experience… Reclining comfy chairs, table service of alcohol and nibbles and being at the movies… What a great idea for a date! Will definitely be back to do the gold class again for my next movies experience seeing as it’s probably only once a year that we go to the movies anyway!

I love this cinema and have been going ever since I was a young lad. They’ve done it up several times since then although. Even though the snack bar is traditionally expensive for what you’re buying, I still can’t walk past it. Although the $ 15 deal for a large drink and large popcorn isn’t too bad a deal when you’re snacking at the movies.
Lately I’ve been spending that bit extra and going into gold class cinemas for the experience, and I absolutely love it. You’re unfortunately paying double the price, but you feel even more so better than what you would at home. The recliner chairs are amazing and soo comfortable, and there isn’t overcrowding in the cinema either. I think they only fit 12 couples in one cinema, which is good for me. They also have a table/​cinema service menu as well, which you can ask a designated time for your meals and drinks to come to you by during the movie. Last time I went I ordered a starter, main, and dessert all to come within half an hour of each other while in the cinema. The best ever! I must say the food wasn’t amazing for what I’ve seen so far, and can seem slightly overpriced for what it is, but it’s a lovely treat when you’re at the movies.

Date night just happened — Gold Class. Don’t you hate those awkward moments, squeezing past your fellow movie watchers on your way to the candy bar?! Go Gold class! Schedule your food and drink deliveries and have the row (2-​wide) all to yourselves (you and your date, mum or best friend).
The chairs are basically the comfiest reclining lounges you could imagine — so comfy in fact that my husband fell asleep…
The food and drinks are more expensive than they should be if you are just considering the cost compared to a restaurant, but considering that it is scheduled and served throughout a movie while you recline and sip your martini… I’ll pay it! I had an espresso martini and don’t recommend it, but The other cocktails have been nice and the food portions are generous.
If buying tickets, food and drinks, expect your bill to be around $ 150 – 180 for 2 hrs of bliss. I recommend arriving 30 mins prior and enjoying the lounge and bar with your date. Don’t forget to book a week ahead to get good seats!

This is my local cinema complex, and it has been for many years. Unlike a lot of other cinemas I’ve been too, the staff here are very friendly and helpful.
The facilities are great and are always clean.
The Candy Bar is a little pricey and makes a trip to the movies just that bit more expensive. But! It is self serve, so that’s a plus!

Getting pricey, cleanliness is not always a priority of theirs and for god sake oil the damn curtain rails!!!

I have been here numerous times over the years, and am sorry to see a declining standard in maintenance of the cinemas in general. For the extremely high price of tickets compared to other countries, I would expect to see seats etc all maintained to a higher standard than they are. To put a word to it «tired»!
The staff behind the candy bar are fantastic as are the staff that scan and take your tickets. I cannot comment on staff at the ticket counter as I usually buy tickets over the internet.
I enjoy the ability of being able to order over the internet, however paying $ 1.10 extra per ticket to save Event Cinemas hiring extra staff seems a little ridiculous to me. Also finding your seat taken by another person and no-​one really willing to enforce allocated seating makes it pointless ordering and getting some benefit for your $ 1.10 extra per ticket apart from having to line up in extraordinary long lines to purchase them. It seems to me that the ticket booths are specifically not staffed to a reasonable level possibly to get people to order over the web.
I have been to Gold Class and this is definitely an improvement to the normal cinemas. VMAX too is better than standard cinemas. But to get into VMAX and Gold Class you need to pay a premium.
Finally I really have slowed down going here now, preferring Wallis at Mitcham, as they do not have Optus discount tickets anymore as they are sponsored by Telstra.

At risk of sounding like some old guy telling stories of «back in my day», I can’t help but feel this place has gotten worse over the years.
The problems started with allocated seating, which is beyond stupid. First of all, you can’t get a good idea on where you want to sit, since you can’t see the operator’s screen when you purchase. Next, when you eventually get to the cinema, there is a decent chance someone else has flogged your seat. At this point, you can either ask them to move, or risk taking someone else’s seat, thus perpetuating awkwardness throughout the cinema…
Aside from this, you aren’t likely to see change from $ 50 for two tickets, a popcorn and drink, which isn’t great value. They obviously haven’t spent the money on cleaning since the self serve candy bar floor is sticky and popcorn and other debris litters both the cinema and the corridors.
You could try gold class, but from what I remember, the food isn’t that great, and the separate seats mean you can’t even try to put a sly arm around your significant other. At least in the regular cinemas the arms can be lifted.
All up a disappointing experience.

Marion has it all.
The candy bar was redone not that long ago and is now self serve. Just be careful for stray bits of popcorn or sticky remains of frozen coke on the floor. I just love the candy stripe uniforms.
The cinemas are consistently clean and the staff, particularly the ushers are friendly and welcoming. Gold class is another, albeit expensive, evening out. The menu has everything and I for one often have eyes bigger than my stomach. You can even instruct when you want certain items to come out during the movie. I’ve never had a bad night out here, consistently great.

Great place to go and watch many films. Hold lots of screens including VMAX and Gold class.
The foyer can get busy at time’s vary’s on what’s on. We normally book on line as then you can choose what seat you want, and don’t need to get there too early to queue.
The candy bar is good offering a good range of lollies and drinks. If you go too late some of the frozen drink’s machine’s don’t work. Can be expensive as many cinema’s are for lollies and popcorn.
Have been a few times, have not experience gold class yet but will do soon when a good film come’s out. VMAX is great and you have lots of space around you…

Possibly the best modern cinema SA has to offer!
Holding 30 screens in total including normal screens, VMAX and Gold Class. Situated on the third level of Westfield Marion it has plenty of parking on offer and easy to access.
The foyer q’s can get large at busy times so I always book on the app first which is very handy and let you choose what seats you want too. You also get to go straight to the usher and miss the q.
The candy bar has recently been refurbished with a 50’s diner style and a help yourself way I serving. The highlight is always the frozen drinks… However sometimes they are sadly not working… But when they do the sour blue berry is my fave! The range of lollies and chicks as well as popcorn is, as one would expect in the cinema, over priced!
The normal screens are quite small and intimate and some are in need or a refresh with cup holders missing etc. My favourite screens are the VMAX with the leather seats, good legroom, head support and a mini table inbetween each seat giving more space to each other. The screen in VMAX is huge… From wall to wall!

This is my favorite cinema. Event cinemas are great. Their iPhone app is good for checking movie times and buying tickets on the go. Staff are generally cheerful and the cinema seats are so comfy. Don’t even get my started about Gold Class though cause that is another (five star) review. For those not in the know, Gold Class is one of the cinema types that Event Cinemas offer and it is beyond amazing.
Event Cinemas really have a wide range of cinema experiences. Besides just the ordinary cinema experience, they also have a stadium like cinema configuration called Vmax which in my opinion is worth splurging the extra $ 4 – 5 for to get the leather seats, extra legroom and cup holders. I went to see Ted in vmax but even better was Fast and the Furious Five.
Tickets are reasonably priced and the queue generally isn’t that bad. If there is one gripe I have about this place, it is the snack bar. Yes, they have a great range, popcorn, chocolates, soft drinks, lollies, but at $ 6 for a small bag of M&M’s, the pricing is outrageous. Even the small popcorn has a premium of $ 6.50. And they don’t particularly like it if you bring your own food in either — they have sort of eased this a bit though.
To summarize, when you go up the escalator to Event Cinemas Marion, you are very literally going up a stairway to cinema heaven. You shall love what Event has to offer. I know I do, I keep going back for my movie fix.

As a parent, with two kids and no family in the immediate area, I have to say Gold Class is the bees knees of cinema experiences. Without family, we’re normally looking at $ 50 for a movie, without a meal, if we need baby sitters — $ 70 at least, if we want to have the luxury of eating, too.
The Gold Class experience means we have a free twenty bucks to spend on food before we’ve even started. Being able to lay back in those luxurious chairs and watch a movie on a big screen, OMG, that’s just a bonus. You \know what? I could SLEEP through the movie and still have a good time.
OK, all the non family babysitting parent stuff aside, Gold Class is all about seeing a movie in luxurious surroundings. When I’m spending as much as they want for me to spend to see a movie today, I want luxury — it’s going to cost me $ 50 for the babysitter plus at least $ 30 for the tickets, we’re up for a hungee once we add popcorn and that red slushy ice thing — lets face it, the extra for Gold Class so someone can bring me a hot plate of nachos to burn my mouth with half way through the movie is nothing. In fact, it’s a bargain.
Let’s just make sure it’s a bond movie, or an action movie, or at least not a five tissue chick flick ‘cos I want to get my money’s worth out of the huge screen and the surround sound. Hell, I can live with the chick flick — just bring me the food and the beer, I’ll get over the tear jerker, too. :)
Recommended. I mean it. Treat yourself for once, it’s worth it.
P. S. I said it has TV. It doesn’t. It has the biggest screen you can fit in front of your eyeballs past a drive in, and a drive in doesn’t have seats OR food this good. Go here. I mean it.

Megaplex is an appropriate word to describe Marion cinemas. The cinemas are nice and big, and the seats are roomy with plenty of space and lots of leg room.
There is always lots of session times to choose from due the the number of cinemas available. Also, if you’ve never been to Gold Class, it’s worth trying at least once. I’ve been to gold class once, and it was great. Big recliners, hot meals, and alcohol. What more could you want? Too bad the movie I saw was a flop.
The staff are really nice and friendly, especially in gold class. Maybe they get paid more?

When I picture people going to the movies, this is the complex I readily assume one would attend. With this said I guess that the Marion Megaplex is pretty much as good as cinemas tend to get.
Being eight years old when the Marion Shopping Centre renovation was first unleashed, I clearly remember the excitement that the cinemas were bringing across the board. Perhaps that’s why I still find them pretty damn good.
I have seen many movies here with no complaints, although one time we were told to evacuate because of a «fire» that occurred at Big W. Michael Jackson’s, «This Is It» just has to wait.
The (fairly) recently renovated candy bar is brilliant. It’s an old school 50’s setting with self serve popcorn. Excellent. The Megaplex also holds an Intensity and a Nandos bar in super close reach. Excellent x2.
Gold class is probably my favourite special treat whilst seeing a movie at Marion, and food and beverages can be brought out to you while you kick back on the reclining chairs.
Unfortunately ticket prices are not cheap, however wherever you go, they just never are.
Lastly, some tips worth knowing about include the cine buzz club, cheap Tuesdays and student discounts.

Gold class is the ultimate cinema experience.
A small group of friends decided we’d indulge in the decadence last Tuesday night. We chose Gold Class in the hope off avoiding the teenagers screamfest for Jacob and Edward that we’d experience the previous year in a ‘normal’ cinema.
Tickets cost $ 37 a head ($ 34 each + $ 9.75 credit card fee) and for the movies you really want to see, it’s worth paying double for the chance to snuggle up in your recliner with a select few.
Upon arrival we were escorted to the lounge and offered the menu which is extensive and totally unexpected for a cinema café. There were dishes that I’d never even heard of! We stuck to the familiar food ordering nachos for two served in individual clay pots ($ 22, choice of pulled pork, spicy beef or vegetarian) and mini wagyu beef burgers (3 for $ 22) at the bar.
Champagne and wine is available by the glass (around $ 10 each) or various size carafes. Other luxuries include liquor coffee ($ 8.50) and amazing deserts many with Lindt chocolate (around $ 20 — note these serve two).
One of the perks of Gold Class is you can order your meals, drink and snacks to be delivered at specific times throughout the movie — for example meals at the halfway mark and coffees 20 minutes before the end. While packaged ice-​cream wasn’t on the menu, they were happy to collect a Magnum from the main canteen and deliver it to my seat half an hour before the scheduled finish time. Talk about being truly spoilt!
One of the perks of booking Gold class is not leaving the cinema for snacks. Unfortunately we found the constant interruptions of food and wine being delivered meant we missed a few sections. It would be great if food and drink was just delivered at the beginning and a half way through the movie, rather than constantly.
80 bucks to go to the movies might seem expensive but it’s a great indulgence and total luxury, perfect for special occasions or an impressive date.
Us girls agreed to make it a biannual indulgence, but next time we’ll ensure there are four of us. One friend sat in the row in front and found herself next to a closet Twilight fan — an older man who had beer delivered every 20 minutes. It was just a little bit creepy.

Spacious and comfortable electronic-​seating, full waiter service and being able to drink alcohol during your movie of choice are all novelties that never get old for me. For a slightly higher ticket price you’re permitted to escape to the quiet Gold Class lobby where you can convince yourself that you’re both of patrician bearing and not in a shopping mall.
In the child-​free lobby my accomplice and I ordered desserts, drinks and snacks at the bar and like empresses commanded when in the movie it would be convenient for us to receive them. Do not make the mistake of assuming that the desserts are designed for one, we made this error and attempted to each consume a boat-​sized dish – and failed regrettably. Like all elements of Gold Class, the portions are so grand I am unsure whether we would finish one between two anyway, but there’s more of a chance with the one vessel than an entire flotilla of Lindt chocolate covered delicacies.
Make sure you sit towards the front as when waiters come around to serve people they can be a bit distracting. If I were going to see a big full-​on action/​fantasy movie, I’d rather go and see it in a cinema with a bigger screen than those on offer in Gold Class. To get the most out of it, I’d also reserve my Gold Class experience for particularly long movies, as the ticket is the same price no matter what movie you see.
Both canoodling and chatter is kept to a minimum due to the gulf generated by the massive seats and a table so this experience would not be appropriate for amorous daters or those with burning questions such as «who’s that guy?» and «who’s that guy?»

I have been to many cinemas, but the Marion MEGAPLEX at Westfield Marion is definitely the most exciting one I have ever been to. Candy Stripers! Need I say more? I travel the extra kilometres to Marion just for the candy section. All bright and shiny with absolutely every lolly you can think of, including frozen soft drinks which makes it very worth it. Plus, with cheap Tuesdays and Monday specials for students you cannot go wrong.
Also keep an eye out for any film festivals they have on for a weekend. This can range from Russian Film Festivals, to Jewish Film Festivals to Horror Film Festivals. Also, around once a month they may play a classic film such as Citizen Kane or Gone With the Wind. These type of films are only shown on a rare occasion, so keep an eye out on the website so you know when to expect them.
They also have the famous «Chicks at the Flicks», where you can enjoy a platter of food and a glass of champagne with your girl friends, seeing the latest chick-​flick to come out.
The only issue I have ever had with Marion MEGAPLEX is that when I came to watch a Norwegian film during Horror Film Festival, it was dubbed, which I found extremely irritating. Though, because I love this cinema so much I am willing to let it slide.
It’s worth joining up to the CINE BUZZ club, as every 10 movies you see you get a free pass, and they also e-​mail you with special offers such as $ 9 movies or bringing a friend along for $ 5.

This is my local cinema complex. It is certainly up to date and modern but it lacks in personality and value for money.
Tuesdays is cheap night and this is the day I would advise you to go if you don’t want to pay exhorbitant ticket fees. However, if you go on a Tuesday be sure to book on line or ahead at the box office as there are big queues. An adult ticket is around $ 14 rather than the usual $ 18. One of my pet hates is having to pay a premium of $ 22 a ticket if the movie you want to see happens to be in the V Max cinema. They charge you more for this because the seats are bigger and leather. Personally I don’t even like cold leather seats so I get charged for something I don’t wnt particularly want. However, I am a bit partial to their Gold Class cinema: I don’t mind paying more if I am in plush tilt back chairs with people waiting on me, especially as I am choosing to have this experience.
The candy bar has been revamped and has taken up practically the whole foyer and is manned by candy stripers (young people in strange striped Bo Peep outfits). It is still overpriced so I would recommend buying a snack from somewhere else and stashing it, as it will get taken away if they think you got contraband.
Event cinemas, are convenient and have many movies to choose from but just make sure you have filled up your savings account before you venture in here.
Tip: If you are a chilly individual like me, always take something warm to put on as the airconditioning is always cold.
