Our family has frequented this temple since it was built back in 1994.
Purely for nostalgic reasons and to support the Buddhist community I return once a year for the Shakyamuni Buddha’s Birthday. This is one of the best days to come and stock up on tasty vegetarian treats, with money going back to the temple.
The people cooking and serving do this out of their goodness of their hearts, and I, for one is more than happy to support this.
Personally, I think it is a win-​win situation; you pay a very reasonable price for homecooked dishes such as the various noodle soups on offer, baos with varying stuffings, faux sugarcane prawns and a variety of sweets, knowing it is going directly into the maintenance and upkeep of the temple which fosters a culture of inclusitivity and creates a sense of community.
The temple welcomes people from all walks of life, and on the weekends you are welcome to stay for lunch after meditation (both as an observer or as a participant).
I do recommend a visit for those interested in Buddhism or those that enjoy decent vegetarian food. They also have a quaint little library with fables in both English and Chinese.
Every Sunday, the RuShi Children School allows children age 4 – 15 to develop their interests in Buddhism, rituals, Chinese language and culture for a small price of $ 50 per year.
As mentioned, I come here for food as I’m not aligned with any religion, but appreciate what this temple does for the wider community, thus will continue to visit now and into the foreseeable future.
