A great record store. They have old and new vinyl as well as the best and widest selection of local music. They also sell vintage clothes, books and DVDs.

What a cool place. Its so easy to lose track of time here. From the hip décor to the easy going background music to the records/​cds on offer to the quirky clothing on the racks this place is the essence of cool.
Will be back to check out this place better I have more time in future. Already looking forward to it!

I came to Australia on a whim and I had no clue about West Australia. Everybody always talks about Sydney or Melbourne. So I did some quick research of stuff I like on Unilocal and wa la! this place popped out and I made it a point to visit. Being unfamiliar with the layout of Perth. I can honestly say it was bit hard to find haha. It’s underground but it does have a pretty big sign outside (Which I posted a picture of). I attended this place three times once on my own and I just sort of whisked through the small establishment. Second time I was with Laura D and the last time was the day I was leaving Perth. On that day, I literally picked up every Australia band on display. They have a section just catering local Australian bands.(Which by the way everybody should pick up Lacey «Verso», Pond «Beard, Wives, Denim, Sam Perry «I hear voices», Emperors «Sam») The owners are way cool and I even took pictures with them! We discussed Brand New and some other bands and I knew I could buy records from there from now on and in till forever haha.

I really have no need for records, as I don’t have a record player. However, I do have a need for vintage finds! Super adorable treasures line the back. And, h-​u-​g-​e props that I found an Urban Cowboy record (i.e. see where I am from). Travolta in Wranglers… yes, please! My first time here was through an Elite Party, so I am sure that my experience is a bit different from the public. Thank you for allowing us Unilocalers to party the night away.

Whenever I despair of Perth having any personality and depth, little things happen to restore my faith in creativity — Fat Shan’s is such a place. Clearly this store is the personal passion of its owners and walking in feels like hanging out in someone’s decked out basement — complete with fairy lights, boxed of LPs on the floor and crocheted blankets over the couch. This place gives the vibe that it is for serious musos only but there is even something for everyone with quirky vintage clothing, Tees and jewellery just to name some other delights. Live music is played there nearly every week and if you are looking for a cosy place to hang out, browse the store or just chat to some cool owners — you should def pay a visit.

Enter via the red English telephone box on Barrack Street and head down the stairs to a wonderful world of records and vintage clothing.
The owner Chris is lovely and will talk to you about music for hours if you like. He‘s a driving force in Perth‘s music community, with Fat Shans putting on live gigs in-​store and in other venues throughout Perth and Freo. He also runs Fat Shan Records recording studio and graphic design, so local bands are seen and heard.
Also if you’re into a bit of star spotting, celebs frequent the store a fair bit. Bob Geldof paid the store a visit last time I was there!

Fat Shan is probably Perth’s best music shop. It caters for anything music-​related — from a huge collection of vinyls, a prominent and proudly-​display section for local bands, clothing from local designers, in-​house design work and various other media. Fat Shan also features a recording studio where bands can lay down tracks at a competitive rate. If you need session musicians to fill out your sound — Fat Shan has a small group of session musicians at your disposal.
Fat Shan is less of a business, and more of a creative collective of people passionate about music in all its guises. It is fantastic to see a place like Fat Shan in Perth.

What a great little shop this is. You come downstairs into a gently lit wonderland of clothes, vinyl and cd’s. Staring at you in the face as you come down is a beautifully presented local music section that is an absolute joy to browse through. The store charges no commission on these sales, so all the cash goes straight to the artist. As a bit of a music nerd, I can tell you there’s quite a few local releases in here that you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else, so it’s worth poking around in. The kind of folk who frequent this store have pretty good taste too, so if you’re not sure what to buy, check out their top ten.
Fat Shans regularly orders in new vinyl stock; this tends to be alt-​rock and indie pop stuff with a bit of an anglophile bent, so if that’s your vibe, check out their new releases section. Otherwise the second hand vinyl section is extensive; I always find a thousand amazing long-​lost records in here from all kinds of bizarre, obscure sub-​genres. It’s arranged in a pair of very large corner shelves, that have a convenient chair for the person you are dragging along to record shop with you.
In the back half of the store, a variety of independent designers sell their short run garments, mostly women’s clothing. If you want to buy something really unique to wear, this is a great place to look. There’s also a small recording studio out the back that has some decent gear and rents out for very reasonable rates; I don’t thin it’s the kind of space you could track a band playing together all at once but it seems like it would be great if you were playing individual tracks into Pro Tools.
The shop also runs regular performances in the store, which have a really intimate vibe and are a lot of fun. Look up the shop and their nights Friday I’m In Love on Facebook to find out about these.

Fat Shan is one cool record store. I wouldn’t exactly call it new since I first noted it several months back, and indeed its racks are filled with as much old vinyl as it is with new stock. There’s even a section dedicated to local artists’ CDs, which I think is nice and patriotic of them.
And the staff here, while very indie and alternative looking, are usually quick with a smile or interesting music suggestion, and are far from pretentious like I’ve found record store attendants at Dada and 78s to sometimes be.
My only gripe about this place is the dim lighting. I’m a sucker for detail when I’m record shopping and I want to get my purchase right, so if you could just lift the lights a little, I’ll love you even more.

It is obvious from merely looking at the door, that Fat Shan Records is something special. To enter the store, you must walk through an old English style telephone box. As you walk down the article-​covered stairs, you feel as though you have dropped down the rabbit hole, and into this magical world of music and fashion.
Fat Shan Records, is a new record store on Barrack St Perth. Locally owned it holds that sense of local pride and appreciation of the local talent. Unlike most record stores, it is set in a basement and lit with dim fairy lights; the interior looks like a little old cottage, rather than a store. You walk in and instantly feel relaxed. It is beautiful and homily.
The staff themselves are the real joy, six under twenty five year olds all brilliantly likeminded have created this little wonderland, where music and vintage fashion lovers come together. They are all responsible for the running of the store, and even organising the in-​store gigs, that take place on the last Friday of every month. These gigs showcase local artists, and are completely non-​profit. The delightful owners stock local bands CDs, and are the only record store in Perth, that doesn’t charge commission.
The store is divided into three sections, the new and old vinyls are held in old school bookshelves that cover from the floor to the ceiling. These shelves are surrounded with arms chairs and vinyl players. The middle of the store is like stepping into Audrey Hepburn’s bedroom, with a dresser filled with handmade jewellery and old vintage bags. The very end of the store has old wooden floorboards and looks like a rustic tree house, the ceiling is filled with fairy lights and a patchwork blanket lies coving a chair. It holds rails of vintage clothing that just like the store are splendid.
Its an remarkable place to visit if you are a music or fashion lover, but really for anyone that wants to see something a little bit different, Fat Shan Records is the place to go.

Fat Shan Records is one of those stores that you just want to keep all to yourself. However, as a Unilocal Scout it really is my duty to keep you informed of Perth’s most awesome places, so I’m going to let you in on a secret.
I came across Fat Shan’s unconventional entrance one day when trying to get the Blue Cat to Mt Lawley. Fat Shan is actually located inside this underground cellar-​like dwelling, and its door is a picture of one of those old school bright red telephone booths from London. When I walked past it was closed, so I vowed to return to find out exactly what lay below.
What I did find was a real treat and like the holy grail of quality vinyl records and cheap as chips vintage clothing. I’m talking records from $ 12-​$ 50 (depending upon rarity and popularity of course) and some sweet vintage finds. They have tops for $ 18, shoes for $ 20, and they’re all actual vintage pieces rather than Kmart hand me downs circa 2008.
Fat Shan is exactly how I want more bedroom to look — a bit dim and moody, but decked out with fairy lights and an awesome selection of books and killer music for extra coolness points. I could definitely stay here all day!
The staff who work here are also really cool to just chill with. They know their music and what’s on in the area, and unlike other speciality music stores, they don’t act all holier than thou when it comes to music knowledge.
