I’ve never really had much need to go into a sporting goods store. An avid avoider of all things active, or even watching or supporting teams of active people — Jim Kidd never really struck me as anywhere I’d need to go. Certainly being dragged there by my parents when younger to get stuff for school sport was a thing… but never of my own volition.
However, I am getting older and with age comes, I don’t even know what you’d call it… Shame? Guilt? Whatever you want to call it, I figured it was time to suck it up and get some supplies to remedy this stationary mindset of mine.
Greeted by a friendly dude at the door, who didn’t look me up and down and laugh at my very being in the store (which I myself found pretty funny), he directed me downstairs to the sporting equipment (clothing being on the middle level and footwear upstairs! How can you even have a 3 level spor– oh whatever). Promptly greeted downstairs as well, I had a bit of a peruse before I settled on the simplest and cheapest device I could find to encourage myself to move.
So I left with my bright blue skipping rope, only $ 15 poorer and only feeling embarrassed now that I’ve written that down on the internet. THE POINT IS: Jim Kidd made it easy.

This is the only place to go for runners. Jim Kidd’s sporting trainers (running, cross-​trainers, netball shoes and much more) are far cheaper than any other store (eg. Rebel Sport). The staff are lovely and will quiz you on use, to match-​make you with your dream trainer.
They don’t have one of those machines that gets you to walk on it to tell you areas you need more support in, like Foot Locker, which is a shame. When I bought a pair of trainers from Foot Locker a while back it was really handy to know what areas I needed the trainers to aid me in. But if you already know your condition (in my case pronate with dodgy knees, that need some love and affection via extra cushioning in the shoe’s sole) then you’re good to go.
You won’t find any one off limited edition Kobe Bryant gold hi-​top fashion numbers here, but you will be fitted and sold at the best price going, the most suitable sneaker for your sporting activity. I wouldn’t buy my gym shoes anywhere else.

Jim Kidd is a two-​storey sports shop on Murray Street. The great thing about Jim Kidd is that it holds regular shoe sales on its upper floor, where you can buy new, quality shoes for as low as $ 5/​pair. Brands involved in their sales include Converse, Vans and Diadora, and there is usually also a good range of shoes to choose.
Downstairs is the sporting equipment, which is diverse and with competitive prices.
For some reason Jim Kidd is able to stay in business despite its regular sales and low prices. As a consumer, it’s great to be able to take advantage.

As well as stocking a large range of sportswear and sports equipment, this Jim Kidd store also offers excellent service. I went in here when me and my boyfriend decided to take up beach volleyball but lacked one essential ingredient: a ball. There were quite an array of balls on display, and hardly being a volleyball expert, I sought help. The friendly man I found took me through the ins and outs of the different balls and helped me to select the right ball for my needs. I got a nice shiny green and yellow one (obviously, colour being the most important criterion). His words of wisdom kept on coming, and he warned me not to get the ball too wet. After looking at volleyballs online and seeing them for $ 60+, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this one was only $ 9.95. Bargain! Since then my boyfriend and I have been working hard to mould ourselves into a seamless and unbeatable volleyball superteam. Mainly we just get in the sea and throw the ball around (sorry, friendly Jim Kidd man. We get it wet all the time. So far it’s holding up!)
