My takeaway review of Spice N Ice; It had to be done, after experiencing this amazing restaurant last week, their takeaway menu beckoned loudly. Especially as they also delivered! How disappointing. Firstly, when we opened the plastic bag containing the food we were somewhat surprised to see a dish ordered was missing. To their credit, when I phoned to mention this, I was instantly apologised to and offered a discount next time; nice, but not really making up for the fact that that the item was missing in the first place. Next, some of the items were cold, and others merely warm. They arrived inside a standard white plastic takeaway bag, and I think that was the problem. Some sort of ‘heat-retaining’ bag needs to be used. I admit that they were coming from Port Adelaide to North Haven, but it’s only an 8 minute drive at most. Lastly, the takeaway menu was a photocopy of the original(tacky) and some of the items that we initially ordered were either«no longer available» or «we don’t have that». Take it off the menu then — it avoids disappointment. None of this however, detracts from the fact that the food is magnificent, but takeaway is no longer an option — further visits in person are required now to sample every culinary delight!

Well that was outstanding! Not sure there are enough superlatives for this review. And I’m about to make a big call here… ready for it? I think this is the best Indian food I’ve ever had. Yes indeedy. The service exemplified what service should be all about. Greeted warmly by friendly staff members, all the little necessities were taken care of as one would expect. The service stepped up a notch when we were given complimentary papadoms ‘to keep us going’ since it was a bit busy(we hadn’t actually been waiting that long but it was a lovely(and tasty) touch). It was when we decided to return a dish that was too spicy for our taste, that we really discovered their service excellence. The waitress apologised and we ordered a replacement dish. Neither dish appeared on our bill and the owner also came over and offered us complimentary naan. He saw us out after the meal as well. So friendly, so attentive and very generous. The food was so very delicious and so many dishes to choose from, many varying from the standard range. Full of subtle flavours and spices, with sauces of richness and meat that melted in the mouth. The fluffiest steamed rice I’ve ever seen and just awesome naan. A good wine list and some great international and local beer, desserts that sounded very tempting and a takeaway home delivery option rounded out the offering. My tastebuds are still tingling and as soon as I can find some more stomach space to fill, I’ll be back!

I don’t live in Port Adelaide, and apart from the occasional trip to Vitalstatistix Theatre out there, I’m not a regular visitor. Spice N Ice is one of my favourite Indian restaurants in Adelaide though, and I often go out here for dinner with my family. The food is reasonably priced, the service is great, and there is an excellent range of Indian basics and then a few creative dishes. In my experience, the staff here really take care of you. Anything you are curious about on the menu they will go out of their way to explain. There is a great range of international beers(not too expensive either), I have a fun time trying different ones every time I’m here. The décor is nothing special — undoubtedly the food is the highlight of the experience. I can’t resist the classic Muttar Paneer. The vegetable curry and the fish curry are both highlights of the menu — both have very distinct flavours and aren’t too creamy or oily. Occasionally they have great specials here like jackfruit and chicken curry — I would recommend giving the more unusual things a go, they are usually quite good.
