Great burger at a fish & chips place. Dan’s Famous Cheeseburger tastes exactly like the burgers at Umami Burger in San Francisco and Los Angeles but without as many choices.

Meandered in after a walk down Victorian street… Concur with another reviewer fish and chips some of the best I’ve had — light crunchy batter not too greasy and generous portions of sea bream. The master stroke is the tartar sauce which is nice zesty and tart homemade type. The chips were also thick cut and very tasty. Ambience is nice outside seating and friendly staff gave us tips as well for additional things to see in the neighborhood. Would like to return to try the rest of the menu!!!

It’s a bit ironic that I’ve been here 3 times and I’ve never ordered fish here. It’s called The Fish Shop! If you know me, I’m not a huge fish person… so why would I come here? For Dan Hong’s Famous Cheeseburger of course! This thing is a beaut, and SOSOOOO good. It’s been a while since I’ve been back and I’m glad I came because I forgot just how good it is. Bacon, pickles, melted cheese, sauce with medium rare beef on a steamed bun. Ughhhhh one of the best burgers in Sydney easily.

Excellent little fish restaurant. Their fish and chips is one of the best I’ve ever had! Oysters very fresh as well.

These days this is one of the great fish joints… love it, and Jeremy doing great things with the team in the kitchen and Laura making all things happen so well in the front of house. The fish is outstanding…

While walking around the neighborhood adjacent to my hotel, I stumbled on The Fish Shop. After looking at the menu and choosing a place to sit in the family style dining room, I had what could be described as quite possibly the perfect meal. I started with a delicious BBq Octopus salad off the specials board and followed it with the grilled snapper and pea mash. The octopus was tender and the salad which included blood orange was fresh and delicious. All of the ingredients complimented each other perfectly. The snapper was simply grilled with a perfectly crisp skin and was served with a lemon wedge and a simple light rocket salad. The pea mash added a hint of sweet starch and rounded out the meal exactly as I wanted it to. My only regret is that I’m only in Sydney for two nights and won’t be able to explore more of the menu. Do yourself a favor and come with friends to take advantage of their great service, wine and cocktail list and delicious food.

Fantastic ambience and food. Overall good value. Refined fish n chips in a great casual shack themed fitout. Great for kids as well. Will definitely be back many more times. Everything from entrée to desserts and drinks very well matched. Love it. Parking a bit difficult.

I wish I could give this place a higher rating because of the impressive fitout but of course, I can’t just review the fitout(if I did, it would rate a 5). If anyone knows me, they would know I have a slight obsession with seafood so I’m quite a harsh critic when it comes to the food of Neptune. Let’s get cracking. I’ll begin by saying the service was good. We were greeted almost immediately upon entering and we had the choice of sitting at the communal table or an individual bar table(we chose the latter of course). I also have to mention, our dishes arrived AFTER the dishes of two other groups that had clearly ordered after us — yeah not happy about that but we were STARVNG to even care. As an entrée, we ordered the mussels to share. This dish sounded divine the way it was described by our super friendly waiter but unfortunately, I have to say, I have had better. When it comes to mussels, size DOES matter and we were left fairly disappointed at the sub par size of flesh(ha fleshhhhh). Last night’s market fish consisted of ‘a pan seared Mulloway with some sort of salad’, a ‘grilled spanish mackerel with rocket’ or a ‘whole baked snapper with potato and something or other’. I settled on the Mackerel and while I wasnt disappointed, the dish wasnt anything to write home about either. It looked impressive enough with gorgeous grill marks on both sides of the steak, but was overcooked. The rocket was literally some leaves placed on the side of the plate without any dressing — good thing we ordered the vegetables, which happened to be brocolli(yay huuuuge fan but again, no EVOO or lemon or anything on the brocolli). I was told the Fish Burger was good although the bun was cold which kinda ruined the overall taste(as you can imagine it would). Would I be back? Pass please. I will make my way across to The Sardine Room to try as a comparison next time I’m in the mood for some seafood.

When I was young we used to go to a chippy, it became a firm institution in our week, Tuesday nights. «Can I have large Sausage with Chips and Gravy please? with a Bit of Salt?» We’d sit on a bench nearby and suck the juicy brown salty goo off that long greasy fleshy cylinder consisting 2% chipshop magic 33% meat 64% beaks, trotters and cheeks, we loved those sausages. We loved going to the chippy. I’m sure everyone has fond memories of going to the chippy, This joint has all the things you love about the chippy accept the jumbo pig sausages and gravy. But it does have potato oysters, it does have heaps of malt vinegar handily located within drenching distance of your food. Beautifully decked out it reminded me of a mixture between NZ and the Hamptons with a nautical dash of White Out. It really couldn’t be further from those glass fronted heating cabinets and wipe clean formica surfaces of yesteryear. Also no Street Fighter 2 or 1942 Coin Op. Lovely staff here and I had a good view of a well run and clean kitchen out the back. Its high class fish and chips, I’m completely torn, they do have other fish dishes and really I wonder whether I should have gone for those, but chips are so damned tempting every time. It really is a lovely spot.

Tasteful seashore nostalgia oozes from its bustling street view surface. Friendly servers in chic, nautical t’s pour h20 and bring delicious albeit a tad pricey gems from the sea to your table. Fresh catch of the day, scallops, were served hot on their shells with garlic, breadcrumbs, butter crust. Potato leek soup featured two plump oysters and was delightfully silky smooth. Would go back for the ½ lb shrimp($ 16) and a cold beer($ 9: ouch!!!).

It’s solid. I really want to give it three and half stars, but unfortunately, that’s not an option. So, given the relatively expensive price of its fish and chips, I’m going to round down. As the other reviewers have suggested, the basic fish & chips is probably the main draw(and, they’re good, too). The special fish can also be pretty good — fish is fresh and always cooked well. But you need to beware the spikes in the tail — for example, I also got caught out by a special(that a previous reviewer mentioned) which was advertised as «for two people», but ended up really only feeding one. Similarly, I’ve been back a couple of times and it’s not unusual for there to be issues with the orders… salads not arriving, forgetting a main and having to rush to get it out, and so on. Yes, it’s busy, and yes, mistakes happen… but it’s been open long enough now that they should be well past growing pains. So, the food in general is solid — this place wouldn’t be as packed as it is unless it was. But you have the prices to contend with; as well as the russian roulette service. It’s faddish now, but I’m betting it won’t last. When the crowds die down and the place has to live on the back of its food and its service rather than its latest-Merivale-on-the-block connection, then *hopefully* things will pick up a star or two.

Fresh and delicious seafood, fast and friendly service, in an adorable laid back setting. Yet another win from Merivale — we will absolutely be back. Fish is the hero here so absolutely order one of the fresh fish specials that change daily or the fish and chips, but… if you get the chance, Dan’s Famous Cheeseburger is FANTASTIC.

Fish are friends *and* food; or so says the front page of the«Reel News»(otherwise known as the menu of the newly opened Fish Shop in Potts Point). Let’s get one thing straight — these are by far the trendiest fish I’ve ever indulged in. No doubt they all hang around in the aquarium(or should I say the Dive Bar?) in Ray-Ban Clubmasters, flaunting a vintage cigarette cases with matching flasks(drinking and smoking run rampant in fish these days) all whilst sauntering about in quirky onesies with appliquéd bubbles. The staff follows suit in striking stripped sailor shirts,(not onesies, unfortunately) flipping up both fishy dishes and fancy drinks from gibsons to oyster shots. It’s all rather Nantucket chic, in an ironic way, of course. Like all of the Merival establishments,(think: Ms Gs, El Loco, Chinese Laundry, Plamer & Co.), the theme and décor are truly part of the experience and everything from the menu font to the food presentation are done so with thematic flare. And here’s the catch — the fish and chips? Divine. While I’m admittedly not a chip expert, I do know my Nemos and can easily declare this the best fish within a fish and chip marriage I’ve yet to indulge in. The batter was golden, light and crispy, the fish was dense, moist and flaky and the tartar sauce was thick, rich and dilly. All. good. things. And that says a lot from someone coming from 3 years in the UK. While I wasn’t massively impressed with the snapper or salmon fillets(both a bit overcooked for my liking), I did appreciate the fact that it was clearly pointed out multiple times that all the fresh fish served was locally sourced and non-endangered seafood. With over-fishing becoming such an environmental problem, it was cool to have this pointed out and promised. Oh and the wine? That was local as well.
