Really yummy food here. Similar to Indian cuisine but… different. Friendly service, low key place, BYOW. Will def return. Ask for recommendations if not sure what to order, we did and all was delicious.

We came here on a Tuesday night with family. It was a quiet night at the restaurant so we got served our drinks quite quickly. On a Tuesday they have a «sample» type banquent menu option where for $ 20 you can get a variety of entrees/mains and a dessert. I think there was 8 different dishes all up. However, you need a minimum of 2 people. As i’m a vegetarian, the couldn’t/wouldn’t offer this option just for me.(the other members of the table wanted meat). So I ordered an entrée/main just for me. The food came out quite quickly and didn’t disappoint. It was fresh, tasty and not too oily or greasy. The serving sizes were generous and the prices were reasonable(especially for the sampler menu). Given that it was such a quiet night though, the service was fairly average. During dinner it was fine and the waitress checked on us and ensured we had enough food. However, once dinner was finished we didn’t get offered coffee or more drinks and were kind of left fending for ourselves. We had to call the waitress to get her attention to order coffees. This was a little disappointing given that it was so quiet. I’d go back for sure as the food was really good, but could definitely improve in service. Hoping it was just and«off» night.

It had been a while since we had been to a Gurkha’s restaurant, so when it was suggested we head here for a family catchup dinner, I was only too happy to agree to the choice in venue. We were the only people in the restaurant for quite some time when we first arrived, but don’t let this fact fool you into thinking that we would be receiving prompt service! The wait staff stood around idly at the back of the restaurant and didn’t come over to take our drinks order until I waved to them for the second time. We asked about the Sample Menu that was on offer and after not really getting any sort of definitive answer as to what was in it we decided that it sounded good enough to get anyway. Asking if there were any vegetarian dishes in it, they said that there were a couple, but they could make it entirely vegetarian if we wanted(but not half-meat half-vego for some reason). The slow and not very helpful service that we received is the only reason that my score is a 3, because the food was delicious! The sample menu has obviously changed over the years, because ours was very different from what is mentioned in previous reviews. We started off with a chickpea soup that was a great way to kick things off. This was followed with a plate of Nepalese dumplings, curry puffs and BBQ Mushrooms that left us fighting over who would get the last of each item. Already feeling quite satisfied the main course was next. Four curries were brought out at first(goat, fish, pumpkin and chicken) along with a mountain of rice. This was enough to fill the table, but to our surprise there was more to come still. A chicken noodle dish and a delicious bowl of spinach well and truly filled us up and as much as I didn’t want to we had to say«no» when asked if we wanted more of anything. Then, just when I was thinking that I had magically found some space in my stomach for dessert we were served a nice little rice pudding dish that seemed like it should have been served warm, but wasn’t. The Sample Menu was fairly standard and not quite what I was expecting after reading about it in a previous review, but it tasted great and for $ 20 we were well and truly stuffed.

The biggest expectation I have when I am going to a new place is flavour! Stuff the service, I don’t come out for the service(although thats what keeps me going back). A big disappointment for me.

I have been coming to Gurkha’s since I first moved to St Kilda. It’s a great Nepalese Restaurant with locations in Prahran, Carlton, Brunswick and Melbourne’s CBD. There is lots to choose from on their menu and with more than competitive prices to match, Gurkha’s is perfect for a low key dinner or a quick lunch during the week. Recently the Prahran Restaurant has launched their very tempting sample menu. This is available on both Monday and Tuesday nights. For $ 20 per person you get a variety of sample dishes off the menu and are invited to eat as much as you can! Think Curried Chickpea and Potato Roti, Oriental Chips with Chilli Mayo and Barbecued Scallops with and Onion and Soy Sauce. The restaurant is warm and inviting, they have a good selection of wine and beer available as well as traditional Nepalese yoghurt drinks to help sooth the chilli!

There is an old Italian proverb that goes something like this«He who lets the goat be laid on his shoulders is soon after forced to carry the cow». I have no idea what that means but I do know that«He who eats goat curry at Gurkhas will forever eat goat curry at Gurkhas». I have eaten here many a time and it has never failed to fulfil my cravings. Another must when you come here is the Gurkhas Special. This is one of the best entrees known to man. I think that Melbournians are so lucky that there are now Gurkhas restaurants open all over our fine city.
