Plum Music is strange store. It has a bit of everything. I guess with the advent of downloading music, as opposed to paying for it, they had to stock other things to make cash. They still have a cool collection of CD’s but they also have some pretty funky t-shirts for guys and have had the odd dress or two that appeals to me. It’s very hit and miss although I have purchased a Summer frock here before. They usually have the best items hanging out the front on display which is handy. They also stock some pretty superfluous gift things. I mean, I hate a knick knack so I am probably not the best judge, however I wish they would get rid of the«Paris-inspired» suitcases and diamonte jewellery boxes and open up the store to host more cool T’s. I would frequent here a whole lot more if they did.

Unlike so many people, I still buy CDs, I get sucked in buy the collectors editions and if I am a fan of the artist, it’s kind of nice to physically own their music rather than just have the download, I am making an effort to minimise this lately as I am driving my flatmates crazy with the flat being overloaded with al my stuff. But in this digital age when record shops seem to be on the way towards being extinct, Plum music seems to be doing okay. Plum music’s success seems to be due to their expansion beyond simply being a CD shop, they sell lots of clothes and gifts. I would be more interested if their approach was more geared towards collectible music as although their range is somewhat eclectic, the CDs they do offer don’t seem that exciting to me. Plum does not seem to be attempting to compete with other boutique music stores offering basic standard editions of CDs and nothing, which looks that out of the ordinary. I notice on their website they have changed their name on Facebook to Plum music and giftware, but I think it may be more appropriate to call it Plum Giftware and Music as the gifts, as the gifts seem to be the main focus. It is probably not a bad place to stop into if shopping for a gift as the shop is jam– packed with stock, but for me it’s all a bit too girly kitsch. Who am I to criticize though, if in the current economy, they are staying afloat, they must be doing something right.
