Redfern Station

Redfern station — not my fav station of all but it’s like that dingy little corner bar that you go back time and time again because it’s so convenient. Most lines pass through redfern so I find myself here quite a few times after hanging out late in chippendale or after studio 107 gigs.
Like what all the other folks said, there are no lifts in redfern so it’s not the best station to get off if you are on crutches (I’ve seen people climbing stairs on it. Not easy or painless). But hey it’s next to Sydney university and you get a fair amount of uni students streaming through this station during the day.
Most shops around the uni side of the station close at 5pm so your best bet to get some food would be the other side of redfern.

Close to Australian Technology Park, easy to get to, NOT easy to park a car at so just walk or, hey, catch a train.

Redfern is the second busiest station in the city after Central
It services all lines except the Airport line and is the closest station to Sydney University.
If you’re not going to the airport and are closer to Redfern than Central, it’s worth using Redfern.
However, the only problem with Redfern is there are no lifts. Anywhere. Period.
They are building one that will service two out of the twelve platforms, but who knows when that will be done. Even then this is won’t be a station friendly to the elderly or mobility impaired.
Overall, it gets three stars for being close to the city and services by almost every line you could want.

This is a busy station to change trains for different locations or lines. The area needs a facelift as the stairs are steep and I couldn’t see a lift anywhere. The information boards, although electronic, are at the top of the stairs. So don’t try and catch trains quickly by using trip lite… you’ll never get the connecting train… maybe the athlete will! This station is used for many students who attend Sydney University. The walk from Sydney Uni and to the train during the winter evenings is not well lit and unless travelling with a group you could feel uncomfortable.

You don’t mess with the classics.
New steel? Soulless. Schmick glass? Gimmicky. Nah, see, want you want, right, is solid old iron with a patina of rust, corrugated roofing, ye olde-​y yellow paint, and bitumen platforms worn with stories. Timeless. Classic.

In the early history of the railways, the trains heading west terminated at «Redfern». It was located south of Devonshire Street and opened in 1855, in the area of «Cleveland Fields» which later became Cleveland Street, going into Sydney. This original «Redfern» station was a single wooden platform and a corrugated iron shed.
In 1876 the new Eveleigh train station was opened one kilometer to the west, at the present Redfern station site. In 1906 it was renamed Redfern.
The train stop for Sydney University. Gritty now and always has been. A lot of Aboriginal people have always lived in the area. Never liked it here around the station — I don’t think anyone does. You never felt very safe in these parts. I spent too much time here already for one lifetime, so now I’ll move on.

Trains are not synchronized so be prepare to run if are changing at Redfern and you have 1 min to run upstairs and then downstairs again. Good luck if you make it.
And no lifts so you need to choose — run or help granny with her shopping.
