Such a fan of the authentic European cookies, especially the Kourabiedes! They are so light, airy and out of this world delicious. I cannot wait to go back and try the baklava next time!

The best thing about Hellas Cakes is their sweet treats: Greek shortbreads, baklava and more. So delicious and super affordable too! The shortbreads are the perfect size to have with a cup of tea or coffee. And speaking of coffee, I must admit I am not a major fan of their brews. But, you can always order tea instead(although it is in bag form rather than loose leaf). I’ve only had breakfast here once, many moons ago, so don’t feel qualified to provide a comment on that. Service is friendly enough and if it’s warm and sunny, the outdoor tables on the street are a lovely spot to while away a morning or afternoon over a newspaper or magazine. Otherwise, head in for takeaway sweet treats to take to your next dinner party — everyone will be impressed!

Hellas looks new, but that’s just the revamp. Started by Greek migrants, Hellas has been cooking up Greek pastries at the end of Lennox St for over 50 years. For the longest time, I remember Hellas being a dusty(small) shopfront, mostly obscured by a frilly doily curtain. They were only open at odd, seemingly random hours. So I’d only get to visit when my passing and they being open was coincidental. Inside would be a warm, saccharine honey smell. Along with a stunning array of Greek pastries. I’m a big fan of the Baklava, but there are many, many more. The semolina slice often gets a look in. Now Hellas has expanded, engulfing the double-front to become a full café. Fortunately the sweet smell and pastries remain. In addition is a quite respectable café menu. You’ll find your usual eggs, but also a lot of Greek and Greek-inspired variations. Cured Salmon, Spanakopita and the like. So why four stars? They definitely get +1 for free wifi and great service. But it’s a small, but important item. I’m simply not a fan of their coffee. It’s not bad, just not to my taste. It’s your robust«stand your spoon in it» or «drop a cube of sugar in it and watch it melt» style off coffee(to my arabica palette anyway). Definitely the place to go if you’re ever in the mood for a delicious, honey, sesame sugar rush.
