4 of us came over from Perth. A friend recommended this place and she was spot on. Excellent service and great food. Price was competitive with the local fare. Generous serves of value tucker. Recommend the dumpling starters. The lemongrass and chilli pork chop was out of this world. The rice paper rolls were yummy. Not fancy but a great place for a casual, relaxed and affordable meal. 1 tram there. 1 back to city centre. We will definitely return on our next visit to Melbourne.

Quan is our go-to on Victoria St. Tried quite a few of the Vietnamese places on offer but we keep coming back to Quan. The atmosphere is slightly more relaxed than some of their neighbours, especially upstairs — although this is often filled with large bookings having a raucous good time… and since its the sort of place you can turn up with ten bottles or ten slabs and only pay a pittance for BYO, why not enjoy yourselves!(There’s oddly even a shower in the upstairs bathroom should you make a mess of yourself!) Dish of choice: Coconut beef, accompanied with coconut rice. The beef sauce/gravy is amazing and makes you wish they had a naan/roti on the menu to mop it all up with.

Two train stops away from Jolimont station if you feel like going to Victoria St for lunch or dinner before the game or just because! Quan 88 is a great Vietnamese restaurant, we had a lovely work dinner here once, with so many different dishes without breaking the bank. Staff are friendly and the food was delivered very efficiently and the tea is delicious! Lunch is also great here, offering a selection of lunch time specials all for under $ 10! If the sun is out, they will open up the windows and doors so you can enjoy the weather. Definitely a cheap eat!

Omg. Not sure if my head is exploding from the fairly decent food or extremely loud restaurant. Might come back if it was empty enough for the waiter to hear my order, but then again it would be empty and we all know eating in an empty restaurant can get you black listed in this town…

I went here the other night with a friend and their friends, much to the lols of my friend and how one of my parents is from Vietnam. Which makes me an «expert» in this particular type of cuisine. Quan 88 was really great, we had a great selection at $ 20pp, the staff were lovely. I’d go back, if asked back.(My general rule with Vietnamese restaurants).

I was all ready to say wonderful things about Quan, this having been my local for a long time and having so many warm memories of the place. Though the last two times I’ve been here have been very slightly tainted. Once by a slug on my spring roll-accompanying lettuce(which isn’t the end of the world — hey, at least you know it’s fresh and the staff were very apologetic) and most recently having hair in my tea and gristly/nobly bits in my dish containing chicken thigh. The hair is another shrug-the-shoulders, «shit happens» accident thing. The chicken could have been rectified though. All of this points towards a slipping in Quan 88’s attention to detail, which is really disappointing because otherwise I really liked this little eat-spot. Had these things not happened, I would have given Quan 884 stars for consistently friendly staff who don’t mind if you need extra fresh chilli, lemon or water, cheap eats and convent location. It also gets points for having a confusingly-angled front door! If I was reviewing based on the last 2 visits alone, I’d give it only 1 or 2 stars. So in the name of fairness, I will give it 3 and will look with an eager eye to see what other Unilocal-ers say about their experience here. Any issues, or was I just a bit unlucky? Let me know!

Well what can I say, but this little Vietnamese restaurant has swept me off my feet! The menu offers all sorts of cheap Asian goodies. The food is tasty and comes out hot and fast — I can highly recommend the chicken ribs; so bad for you, but soooooo goooooood! It’s very casual dining, the décor is simple, it’s extremely loud and busy inside plus it’s good for a quick bite to eat before a gig or football match. The service is hectic, but nonetheless your orders will be on your table within 10 minutes of ordering. Tip: It’s BYO.

Back in the day, I worked a few blocks away from Victoria Street. On a Friday evening the office would typically relocate to a bar a few doors down and across the road from Quan 88. Inevitably the time would come that we’d require sustenance to continue the night and troublingly, the bar(which hadn’t been open very long) only supplied potato crisps. Enter Quan 88. A quick trip down the road to place an order and this gem of a restaurant would deliver platters of entrees to us at the bar and thus tide us over for a while longer. Such ingenious service of course, lead me to try the restaurant itself. To this day I can still honestly say Quan 88 may serve Melbourne’s best san choi bow. Big call, I know… but someone has to get the title, right?

If Little Bourke st is ‘China Town’, then Victoria st is ‘BIg Vietnam Town’ Well known for its Asian restaurant/grocery selection Victoria st is a must visit destination for diners seeking decent Vietnamese food. ‘Quan 88′ is one of the better Vietnamese/Chinese restaurants along the strip consistently providing good quality affordable eats. The restaurant is positioned somewhere between the cheap/grungy eat and run places and the clinical/over priced«white asian» restaurants. The ambience is warm/cozy with subtle asian décor influences and good for small groups. Ok every one does spring rolls but the spring rolls at ‘Quan 88′ are goooood and the fried salt and pepper calamari is amazing. Entrees are between $ 4 — $ 8 and the majority of the mains average $ 14 and seafood mains around $ 20. Think Peking duck, crispy chicken, grilled eggplant, papaya salad, sizzling prawns, phở etc. Its also hard to leave ‘Quan’ 88 without trying a serve of fried banana + ice cream. For a group of five, a couple of entrees, three to four mains, fried ice cream and corkage expect to pay around $ 20 pp
