Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Very nice view of Cairns and the Kuranda rainforest. I would highly recommend taking this up to the middle of the rainforest versus taking the railroad. The railroad ride up was not very pleasant since it was very humid and there is no A/​C. Plus it’s also very slow! At least in the gondola ride, you can get a cable car for yourself and get a breeze.
Yes this is a tourist trap. Like one Unilocaler said, you should note it takes 3 hrs roundtrip and town closes 3:30 pm. Don’t waste $$ on the diamond view; the only difference is the clear bottom of the car. And don’t overpay, should be around $ 100 USD for a tour; anything more is a rip off.

Great views. Really great views. Great little pub at the top of the line as well! I think this was worthwhile and would do it again.

Stunning views from above the jungle canopies and across the hills, this was a great way to return from Kuranda after a fun-​filled day. It was quick and efficiently run, and worth incorporating into the itinerary. It would have been good to have more guidance/​descriptions to learn about the area en reute and to know what was available at each point, but as it was we coasted along blissfully admiring the surrounds.

This gondola ride is excellent. The views are amazing, and the cars comfortably fit a family of 6 (though I only had 4 in my party — I saw families of 6 riding easily in them). If you’re afraid of heights — duh — you’re not going to have a good time. Although, if it’s any help, you’re only ever a few feet above the top of the canopy… hehe.
One thing I need to mention: we pre-​booked our tickets and picked them up at the self-​service kiosk. You can’t use your phone on it — you must use a hard copy.
Oh, and one last thing: the staff here… at every encounter point… are very friendly and seemed genuinely happy to greet us and help us. I thought they might be like the typical ride operator at any amusement park, but I felt they were sincere in their greetings and smiles, and that means a lot. Well done, staff! :)

Awesome way to get to and from Kuranda. Scenery is amazing and the ride is relatively smooth. We spent the extra $$ to go Diamond Class which meant that our carriage had a glass bottom so we could straight through the floor and really get a sense of how high you are!
The only (small) issue with that is that the diamond class carriages come along every 10^th carriage. If you’re lucky, you may jump straight onto one or you may need to wait until the next one comes around. If there are other Diamond class ppl in front than you may have to wait even longer but what can you do???
The other thing I didn’t like, and this may be a diamond class thing due to the frequency of carriages, is that you may be bundled in with someone else that you get along with or completely annoys you, again, what can you do.
Best pro of going on the skyrail is that it runs constantly both directions. If you use the train, there is only a couple of services each way.
A beautiful relaxing way to see the greater area of Cairns from the rainforest and Mountains surrounding the city to the ocean.

Nice way to see the rainforest and we were fortunate to have a great guide. The gondola makes 3 stops and you get off and tour the rainforrest on the first and second stops — the last stop is the end and there is a nice gift store (of course).

It’s cool, but not that cool. The cableway is a feat in engineering itself. The fact that only 4 trees were cut down in its building is pretty amazing in of itself. The town of Kuranda is not that exciting. The views are pretty breathtaking, but just got taken for granted after a while. It’s definitely better than the train or driving to Kuranda though.

I have been on the Skyrail Cableway twice now and I think that speaks volumes about how great it is, especially considering I’m not the greatest with heights. I would highly recommend going on the cable cars as part of your trip to Far North Queensland.
We took the cable car up to Kuranda which took approx. 90 minutes including 2 stops. At each of the stops you can get off and walk around the rainforest and check out some lookout. Even on a less than average day where it is drizzling a little this is still worth it, it is a rainforest after all! The view is spectacular, you can take in so much of the rainforest, out to the ocean and you also see some magnificent waterfalls like Barron falls.
At each end of the cable car journey there is a little store associated with Skyrail. The staff here are very friendly and very helpful. They have the usual tourist items, also some gorgeous clothing, homewares and even some unique Australian Christmas decorations. They will keep your shopping for you to collect later, which leaves your hands free to explore the gorgeous village of Kuranda.
You can do a return journey on Skyrail or you can go back down the mountain on the scenic railway. Either option is amazing.

This is a gondola ride up to a little town in the middle of the rainforest. There are tons of tours that you can take, but our hotel told us that it was cheaper to just do it on your own if you had a car to drive to the starting point near Cairnes. Doing it this way was about 100 dollars vs up to 400 for a tour. You stop at 2 points in the rainforest and then in the town. I really liked the ride and the little town, but some things to note:
1. It takes about 3 hours round trip
2. The town closes around 3:30
3. It is a tourist trap
That being said, spend your money wisely and it was a great experience.

The skyrail is a gondola that can take you up to Kuranda or back. There are 2 stops in the middle that lets you take in a view of Barron falls and mini-​walk through the trees (not worth it in my opinion). If you fancy a glass bottom gondola, you have to pay extra.
One more thing, if there is a party of 2 or 3, they will stick more people in your gondola with you. The max capacity is 6 people per gondola. I think it’s just to facilitate the lines and they must have some sort of policy. I was placed in a gondola with a family of 4 (2 little screaming kids) and it wasn’t the most enjoyable 40 minute ride down, even more so since they aren’t my kids.

A+ If you’re i Cairns this is definitley something you should experience. Going over the forrest in the cabel cars was an experience I will never forget.
Amazing staff who were happy to give tips on where to visit in the area.
I went on the Aboriginal walking tour and found it so educational and our tour guide Les was happy to answer all of our questions.
The ride is simply wonderful and please, its affordable and I really do recommend this if you are in FNQ.

Great way to travel to Kuranda with stops to take in the scenic views of the rainforest and Barron Falls. They offer a free 20min. tour of the rainforest at the first stop and 3 viewing points of Barron Falls at the 2^nd stop. It’s certainly a great and easy activity to do in addition to snorkeling/​diving The Great Barrier Reef.

DO NOT GO ON THIS RIDE!!! We were stuck on this for 5-​hours with little to no communication. No power, no lights turned dark just swinging in the breeze! Bring your toilet with you or wear your diaper if do go on. We called 911 THIS OUTFIT IS POORLY RUN AND COMPLETELY INCAPABLE OF RESCUE.

Unglaublich schöné Tour über den Regenwald. Es gibt die Möglichkeit hin und zurück zu fahren oder einen Weg mit dem Rainforest Railway zu machen. Wirklich ein tolles Erlebnis. Man schwebt praktisch über den Regenwald und durch eine gute Informationsbroschüre kann man auch die verschiedenen Arten des Regenwaldes gut erkennen.
Zwischendurch hat man die Möglichkeit auszusteigen und einen Boardwalk durch den Regenwald zu unternehmen, entweder alleine oder sogar mit einem Ranger, der detaillierte Informationen gibt.
Wirklich ein super tolles Erlebnis mit tollem Ausblick auf Cairns von oben und das Umland.

One of the coolest things you can do while in Cairns is ride the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Set aside some money for the excursion and ride it through a lush rainforest. Sure you might not see any animals but you’ll see an assortment of flora that boggles the mind. Some of the trees are only native to Australia so it was really cool to check them out along with the views of one of the last preserved rainforests on earth. Enjoy the ride!

I’ve been on many gondola /​skyrail type things in the past, and this one is especially cool! You start in Kuranda at the top of the mountain and head down the mountain in the gondola. As you make your way down, there are two scenic stops where you can get out, take photos, and wander the rainforest. There is also a spot about half way down where you change to a different gondola line. The whole ride takes at least one hour and is scenic all the way down. The individual pods are comfortable seating 6, but they never pack you in there, so we had 3 – 5 people each time we went traveled down the mountain. There are open windows at the top of the gondola so you get fresh mountain air and you can also take photos through the openings without getting ugly glass in the way. You see the forest and the ocean from the gondola, it’s fantastic!
If you get a chance to go to Kuranda, I highly recommend that you take the Skyrail down the mountain. It’s worth it!

Die Seilbahn über den Regenwald, sehr beeindruckend. Kuranda ist klein und fein zum Verweilen und Schlendern.

Wer in cairns ist unbedingt mit der Seilbahn von kuranda aus zurück fahren.
Kombitickets gibt’s in cairns an beinahe jeder Ecke bzw dem einkaufszentrum am Hafen zu kaufen.

If you want to go to Kuranda, I hope I’ll be forgiven for repeating the advice I gave in my review of the Kuranda Scenic Railway. In my opinion, the best way is to go up on the Skyrail, and down on the railway.
A bus picked us up from Cairns, and the driver said the Skyrail was the longest cableway in the world. Guides wouldn’t stick their necks out so far … some said they couldn’t make that claim, because there were two changes of car involved; another said she thought there was now a longer one in Canada, anyway the best we’d had was ‘it may be one of the longest’.
Either way, it’s a mind-​boggling feat of engineering, when it’s considered that every last part was airlifted to its location. It lifts you up the mountains through the rainforest canopy, which, even if you don’t spot much wildlife, turns a mere ‘ride’ into an ‘experience’. Passengers have to change cars at Red Peak Station, and can break their journey at this point, to take a walk through the forest conducted by a ranger. The other point is the Barron Falls; passengers have a magnificent aerial view of the falls approaching this station, and are allowed out again, to take a short walk for a more leisurely look

Der Trip nach KURANDA ist ein Muss. Unbedingt den ganzen Tage einplanen.
Und mit ein bißchen zureden kann man früher hin und später zurück buchen.
Mein Tipp. Morgens mit der Skyrail hochfahren und abends mit der Bahn wieder zurück.
Achtung immer die Kamera bereithalten. Es gibt viel zu entdecken

Kurunda Railway is amazing. You have to take this to see the true colours. You can see the whole rainforest below it is beautiful. This is a not to be missed route, you WILL miss out on the incredible scenery and overall experience.

Einen Ausflug nach Kuranda zur Skyrail ist ein Pflichtprogramm ! Ich habe es von einem Arbeitskollegen empfohlen bekommen und kann diese nur weitergeben. Die Fahrt im offenen Zug bereitet einen viel Spaß. Das Klima ist tropisch — entwerde man mag es oder halt nicht. In Kuranda lädt ein alter uriger Pub zum kurzen Verweilen und erfrischen ein. Nach der Fahrt mit der Bahn kann bzw. konnte man noch eine Fahrt mit dem Boot machen, wenn da nicht Hochwasser gewesen wäre und die Nähe zu den Krokodilen zu nahe geworden wäre.kuscheln braucht man mit den Echsen ja nicht gerade ;)

Die längste Seilbahn der Welt. Das war der Wahnsinn! 1.5 h eine Tour über den Regenwald mit 2-​mal umsteigen. Bei der 1. Station war eine Führung ca. 20 min durch den Regenwald.
Bei der 2. Station war ein riesen Wasserfall. So ein großen habe ich noch nie gesehen. Oben angekommen habe ich mir noch Kuranda angesehen ein sehr schöner kleiner Ort leider schon auf die Touristen eingestellt mit einem Haufen von Mitbringsel Shops!

The Kuranda skyrail and scenic railway are definitely worth doing while visiting Cairns. We took the skyrail up and got amazing views of the rainforest below. There are two stops where you can get out of the cable car and view the spectacular scenery. Kuranda itself is a village in the rainforest and is very much geared up for tourists. There are plenty of craft shops and shops offering local produce. We got the scenic railway train from Kuranda to Cairns and again it offered great views although not as spectcular as the the skyrail on the way up.

This is definitely a must — do attraction because the views are absolutely spectacular. The skyrail (cable car) also gives you the opportunity to experience the rainforest first hand — there are numerous stops on the ride to get off, stretch your legs and actually go into the rainforest itself which is utterly stunning up close as it is from the skies.
The Kuranda Skyrail is suitable for people of all ages but its probably best to stay away if you’re scared of heights!
It is not and attraction to be missed!

This is the most AWE inspiring ride you’ll EVER take! I kid you not! 7.5kms of awesome scenery — the last 2kms of which you won’t believe the grandeur, the magnificence & it will bring a lump to your throat & tears to your eyes.
Make sure that you catch the Skyrail from Kuranda NOT from Cairns! You skim over the rainforest & can stop at 2 way stations in the heart of the rainforest. It is well worth while stopping at these way stations as the guides are very knowledgeable & it’s the safe & maybe the only way you should be in the middle of the rainforest.
Try & get in a car on your own especially after the 2^nd way station to appreciate fully the beauty that you are about to see. Some tourists chatter incessantly — they might spoil what should be an absolutely wonderful experience. You’ll also feel less of a fool when you’re so overawed by the beauty that it brings tears to your eyes.
It truly is such a stunning ride that you’ll NEVER forget the sights you see when you skim over the top of the rainforest & see Cairns, The Great Barrier Reef and the curvature if the earth. WOW & double WOW! It is SO stunning it takes your breathe away.
Whatever you do if you are in Cairns — DON’T miss this trip! Even if you are unimpressed with magnificent views — you won’t be unimpressed by this experience.
This is the BEST attraction in the world for magnificent natural beauty — AWESOME & then some!
5 Star is insufficient for this — it deserves 100!
