Big Huey’s Diner

Big Huey’s Diner has everything you could expect from a classic American diner — flashing fluro lights, old-​school booths and even the staff uniforms are white with candy stripes. Freakin’ adorable.
The menu boasts burgers, salads, burgers, milkshakes, burgers and beers. The cheese and bacon burger immediately caught my eye, and then the intriguingly delicious Vietnamese pulled pork burger (I’m coming for you next time) but I finally decided on the Huey’s meal deal. I love a good bargain and this one is the epitome — a cheeseburger, sweet potato chips and a pot of Heineken (or wine or soft drink) for $ 15, while my Vegetarian friend went for the Shroom Burger.
Good lord.
While we drooled waited, the delightful staff treated us to some tastings from their slushie machine, which changes recipes often. Without hesitation we slurped down a frozen peach bellini (oh my God so good) and a strawberry margarita (oh God even better).
My cheeseburger came and I was surprised to see that the bun was, in fact, turkish bread. This was at first a slight concern for me… It’s difficult enough to look lady-​like while chowing down on a giant cheeseburger, let alone with the added stress of a hard and chewy bun. HOWEVER, this Turkish bread was incredibly soft and a really great change to the classic burger.
I’ll be honest, I basically inhaled my lunch. It was just so damn good. I am also itching to get back there but am dreading the hour I will have to spend at the gym afterwards to burn it all off.

They literally couldn’t have done more to make us feel at home during our recent visit to Big Huey’s Diner. We left feeling genuinely welcomed, very satisfied and full to bursting.
Our waitress was absolutely lovely. She was patient, extremely helpful (with spot on suggestions) and had a brilliantly bubbly and bright personality. I couldn’t fault her.
The food was delicious: very authentically American fare. We had a sweet selection of different dishes and enjoyed them all. I’d recommend the Worlds 2^nd Best Nachos (quite a fair claim) as they are exceptionally fresh and have an utterly delightful and rich flavour so often missing from Mexican food in Australia. I was also a huge fan of the chips (both varieties) and the onslaught of delightful house sauces that accompany them (I’d recommend the Aioli, BBQ or table hot sauces). Of the burgers we tried the Big Huey was definitely the stand out.
Huey, my husband’s favourite celebrity chef, was on hand and warmly introduced himself to hubby while he was cruising the juke box. When Huey and his lovely staff discovered it was his birthday they went above and beyond. They serenaded him with birthday wishes and a free sundae and Huey even gave him a complimentary dvd signed with birthday wishes. This made my husband’s day and I greatly appreciate it.
I’d recommend checking the website prior to a visit as this place would be taken to a whole new, utterly delightful level with the complimentary live music (including impersonators) offered on some nights. Make sure to book though or you mightn’t get a seat. However If you do venture forth on a dead night be prepared for service so intimate it’s nothing short of 5 star.
Suffice it to say I was thoroughly impressed with the entire dining experience. Not only do I intend to return (soon!) I’d also recommend Big Huey’s Diner to any and all.

This place is well worth a visit. Friendly staff offering great service. The menu is excellent with lots to choose from. There’s a lot of «home style» thought gone into the menu and the contents of the food, which sets it apart from many other places in similar food genre. Well worth a visit and deserving of repeat visits.

Pretty decent servings, and for the price, quite filling, so at least something’s
decent here. The burgers are a little odd; traditional ingredients and all, but a different
assembly. It’s like making a full sized house out of Lego; Sure it’s a functional house,
it just looks a little different. Turkish roll styled burger assembly with mustard, and
much more of a home styled taste about it. Sauces are available on the table so
these burgers go without too many lashings of sauce in them.

When I was a kid, my parents used to always take my sister and I to a local American diner for pretty much any special occasion, ever. Because it was super family-​friendly but still had grown up drinks and food they liked.
Big Huey’s Diner reminds me a lot of that place. It’s absolutely made for families, which was proved by the tables lined with kids on Saturday night. So as far as a couple date night venue goes, I would probably advise opting for take away next time — which they do offer and will be doing more of soon.
However, for a cheap and cheerful meal, casual lunch or just satisfying a burger and sweet potato fries hankering, I’d send people of any age down here. A meal will set you back around $ 15-​$ 25 per head depending on whether you’re having a beer or not. I suspect this will be extremely popular with the South Melbourne lunch crowd and rightly so.
The beer list is decent with some great craft beers on offer. We didn’t pay too much attention to the wine list, because burgers.
The burgers are actually more like a super-​sized panini than a classic burger style. I opted for the wrap-​your-​own burrito. The combinations were far from traditional (salmon, pickles and guac?) but they were tasty. Although they really shouldn’t present them with half the ingredients piled on the pita bread as the bottom one was well and truly soggy by the time I got to it.
For the price we were not complaining and were satisfied that Big Huey’s delivers what it sets out to. If halves were allowed I’d give it 3.5.

I’m always a big skeptical when someone boasts about being an American style diner. I honestly don’t think that anything can get better than an actual American diner. At first, upon walking in and surveying the area, this place looks like a normal «Australian» café. Concrete floors complete with a share table in the middle but it expands from that to the old fashioned booths and the lovely juke box. This place seems to put a twist on Australian/​American design with food that is better than what you would actually expect.
Be forewarned, the burgers are HUGE. I reckon I probably could have gotten away with eating a kids main meal and have been full, but I ventured towards the Huey’s meal which was a cheeseburger, a side (sweet potato fries) and a drink. I can honestly say that after eating the delicious meal I don’t think I’ll be eating much more today.
The milkshakes are AMAZING and the ice cream is definitely something you need to try!
This place has it’s minor teething issues at the moment so just be prepared but definitely worth the trip in!
