History
Established in 2014.
TWO veterans of the Melbourne restaurant scene — chef and television personality Iain Hewitson and wine entrepreneur/front-of-house specialist Neil Prentice opened «American diner» in the bustling South Melbourne Market precinct.
Hewitson is known for his books and television; some still remember his high-end restaurant cooking (Clichy and Fleurie) and the famous Last Aussie Fishcaf. Prentice has, in addition to several wine labels, been the self-styled «wine guy» at Melbourne’s Chin Chin since opening. «Working at Chin Chin has refreshed me and made me realise I need to do this again for myself,» Prentice says. A third partner is Nick Hope, manager at the Hewitson co-owned Barney Allen’s, in St Kilda. As well as burgers, corned beef and reuben sandwiches, the «diner» will riff on the whole zeitgeist cuisine of «poboys,» «sliders» and «poppers». «There will be a faintly New Orleans feel to the food,» says Prentice.
