I’m going to make an assumption about the service today. They were either a person down, or not normally this busy. Everyone seemed frantic and stressed. The service suffered. A ton of stuff was thrown around the [open] kitchen. It wasn’t a pleasant vibe at all. Which really makes me want to give this place another shot. The menu looked oh-so-promising. Unfortunately they weren’t serving a large portion of it, so we couldn’t order exactly what we wanted. We did get the Turbo Burger, which was pretty damn good. There’s a lot of items on the menu that offers sriracha mayo — which is a MASSIVE tick in my books. Our replacement item was the beans and avocado on toast. Not great at all. The beans were floury and the sauce tasted burnt. Shame. So all in all, a pretty mediocre experience, but maybe it was an off day. I will have to update when I try again.

Missing Brooklyn? Never been but would love a taste? New Lots can cure that craving with a small slice of the home of the Beastie Boys. Set in the back streets of South Melbourne along the 109 tram tracks this warehouse style, open plan café quietly beckons with 3 outdoor tables, a large indoor communal table and barstool window seating. When in Brooklyn, do as the Brooklynites do and order the Brooklyn. A delicious combo of perfectly toasted sour dough topped with salsa, avocado and a fried egg served with a side of chipotle sauce. So good that I did not want it to end. My dining companion thoroughly enjoyed his pork belly, home made apple sauce with slaw on a ciabatta type roll. The coffee was perfection. Service is friendly, the menu exciting and affordable, the vibe is cool with great beats playing in the background. We have found our new hidden gem.
