History

Established in 1934.

Institute of Modern Languages was set up by the University of Queensland Senate to give more adults the chance to deepen their lives by inviting the community into the university through language learning. IML-UQ is a powerful tool for facilitating language learning and cross-cultural communication, especially useful in today’s multicultural society. This task is aided by dedicated and enthusiastic language tutors, teaching in over 30 languages.

IML-UQ also provides a vehicle for previous UQ students to remain connected with its alumni in a meaningful way over the decades in which students are no longer engaged in more formal study.

When Georgiana Poulter became the IML Director in 1999, she developed the successful translating and interpreting service which now translates into over 75 languages.

The developing role of IML-UQ in contemporary society is to meet the language service needs of the corporate sector, small businesses, government departments and community organisations.
