Strathfield Railway Station

Strathfield Station is an older western line station. If you have ever read Peter Skrysleky’s poetry then Strathfield Station is well described here and it hasn’t changed, even from my days at school. Running up platforms to catch connecting trains can be a great form of exercise especially at 3.30pm. One has to be an athlete to run, jump over school bags and squeeze between the people who just want to chat. There is a kiosk on one platform and the coffee hit is great in the early mornings during Winter.

Haha, I was a schoolie here as well… a long time ago. I usually am in transit these days, but a couple of weeks ago needed to alight, caus I was attending a School Reunion. Memory Lane. Pleased to see current rennovations for such a busy station. And yes, the walk from station to school was unrecognisable.

Strathfield is just 14 km west of the Sydney central business district. A fast train will get you there in no time. The station was originally named Redmyre in 1877, as this was once the Redmyre Estate. The name was changed to Strathfield in 1900 and the station modernized in 1927. In addition, a platform and building was erected on platform 8 which provided a mortuary receiving facility. For nearby Rookwood Cemetery I suppose. It was later converted to a store for the Refreshment Room on the station.
Always lots of schoolies here. I was one of them once from Homebush Boys High.
I remember getting the country train to Cooma and the Snowy Mountains from here when on a school trip when at Homebush Boys High.
Busy station but does the job well.
