I’m all pro-choice but sometimes all those pages on a menu are just too overwhelming. Artisanal what? How do you pronounce that? Is that a sausage or a cheese? I’m sorry, my eyes are starting to blur… or is that just the typeface? So if your eyes are tired of reading and you’re too hungry to think too much, The Foundry is the place to go. No menu, just four salads on the counter and two hot specials on the blackboard — that’s three choices if you just get a bit of each salad on your plate. The salads are all very seasonal and taste pretty fresh despite being pre-made. Nothing to write home about but decent combos. They we going through a Vietnamese kick when I was visiting, inspired by the owner’s mum who was visiting from Vietnam so phở it was on the blackboard. I’ve seen better looking phos but my manager still slurped it down happily. It’s gotta be tough when food in the area is that good, but the folks at Foundry still charm with friendly smiles and simple, produce-driven food. A great escape from the usual bustle of Surry Hills cafes in this shaded nook hidden down a lane way.
