Awesome spot for lunch/dinner. I ordered the spicy beef laksa noodle soup and it was phenomenal! The staff were very helpful when I asked them whether the soup was pork or chicken based(it is mostly chicken based btw!). The soup was rich with flavour and the beef was extremely tender. The noodles were cooked to perfection! In terms if spiciness, the soup it self was not that spicy but you have the option of adding more(which I recommend!). The only 2 downsides to this dish is that the beef chunks were a little too big, which made it harder to eat. Perhaps cut them into smaller pieces in the future? Also, the soup had a creamy flavour to it, which starts off nice but as you work your way through the dish, it does get a little heavy on your stomach. Overall, a great experience and would definitely go back!

Safely eat very minimally spicy Laksa here! I’m super weaksauce when it comes to spicy and this was great for me. The laksa here is a bit denser than most, feels like a curry soup. Portions are huge– consider buying just one bowl and share with someone. The staff kindly let me try the laksa first before buying. The wontons are great and came recommended by the staff. The shrimp slightly over cooked probably because I let it sit in the hot soup for too long. I like that they offered 4 noodle choices and had every Asian condiment you could think of: 4 – 5 different kinds of spicy chillis, fish sauce, hoisin sauce, vinegar, and soy sauce. This is for a super casual, cheap $ 11 meal, not a date or anything. It’s inside the Sussex Centre, top floor, and is part of a cafeteria.

I will never forget how good the laksa was here. My first time trying lakso and I am now a fan for life. I got chicken and shrimp, my husband got some kind of medley with pretty much everything in it. They even made our little son some broth with veggies, noodles and chicken. I cannot express how good it was.

My Singaporean boss turned me onto laksa. The options here at home is not that great, so when I saw on Unilocal that this place is getting solid reviews, I knew I had to come try a bowl. The food court reminded me of being in Asia. The photo heavy menu was helpful to my non-Asian BF. I ended up with the seafood laksa and the BF has the spicy beef laksa. Huge bowl of noodle for the price, and I ate it all. So fricking delicious. But now I’m back in the States craving this place.

I have eaten laksa at many different places around Sydney but this is the only one I have ever gone back to eat at for a second time, and then a third, fourth, fifth… Seriously, I have eaten at this place so many times over the last decade that I have lost count, and with good reason; they are the best. They are incredibly consistent, I always order chicken and prawn laksa and it is always the same: The chicken is nice and tender with no gristly bits and the prawns are huge. The broth itself is delicious; managing to somehow be spicy, creamy, salty and sweet all in the same mouthful. The service is friendly and fast, usually around 2 minutes wait and you can choose what kind of noodles you like. There are also extras available(Soy, chilli pieces, sambal…) that you can add to your meal for free. And did I mention this place is cheap?

Prawn and wonton noodle soup is a dream come true. What a beautiful place. This is the perfect food court like you are actually in China and is so close to everywhere in the CBD. Check it out !!

Came here for a laksa, was not disappointed. This place is in a food court on the second floor of the building. It was tough to locate as I only had the address and checked the whole first floor before going upstairs. I thought this might have been a restaurant based on its name. I asked what to order and they gave me the fully loaded laksa that was filled with lots of seafood and some BBQ pork. The broth was awesome as was the rest of the dish and they gave me a bunch of hot sauce to boot! I wish I had more meals so that I could have tried other items here.

One thing I have learned about food selection is that you can’t just assume a restaurant will be good or bad based on the location. This joint is located in Haymarket inside the Sussex Centres food court. So you could just as well go up there and go eeny meeny miny moe and pick that place but the Happy Chef is definitely superior then most food court foods. I decided to give it a try based on a fellow Unilocalers suggestion. I was feeling like going for a bit of Laksa. The menu had a lot of different Laksa options and I eventually decided on the Spiced Chicken and Beef Laksa Soup. Next dilemma for you is selection of noodles. They offer a choice of rice, egg, rice vermicelli or large rice. I opted for the egg noodles. They take your order and you stand aside and wait while they prep the food and contemplate whether or not you made the correct decision. I wasn’t waiting very long until the bell rand and I was up. They put the towel on a tray for you and your free to get extra chilli or sauces you desire. The bowl is extremely large and generously full of both meat and noodles. The Laksa was so creamy and just the right flavour to warm the insides up with a nice kick of spice. The noodles were really soft too and went perfect together with the chicken, beef and even some tofu in here. So to conclude delighted I came here and didn’t assume it wouldn’t be good based on the fact it’s in a food court and not as pretty on the eyes as some places. REMEMBER: ASSuming makes and ASS out of U and Me.

Yeah, I’m a laksaholic. Growing up in Indo I’m quite biased and picky when it comes to my laksa. I have not found a place here in SoCal that serves decent laksa, so I fly all the way to Sydney to feed my cravings. I’ve tried different places, but Happy Chef is my go-to place. There are two different locations: one in the food court at Sussex House, and the other at Paddy’s Market food court. Friendly service, generous portions, authentic. I’m salivating now at the thought of that first slurp. Less than 24hrs. Can’t wait.

I have no doubt the Chef here is happy, but not as happy as my tongue was. You know that repulsive Tooheys ad where a guys tongue leaves his mouth and goes on an adventure of its own? Well if I didn’t clench my teeth shut tight I’m pretty sure my tongue would have jumped out of my mouth and asked the chef if it could move in with him. Why wouldn’t the chef be happy? He is the master of his craft, a spice artist, a maestro of coconut and seafood and wontons and noodles. His restaurant has a huge queue and he madly rings a bell when your food is ready, and woe betide those who dont respond promptly. The ring gets louder and angrier. Having had a few Laksas I know now which options go with which dish and the avuncular chef even agreed I had chosen the better of the noodle combinations, although I didn’t actually know what they were. As usual I overestimated my chilli tolerance, but nothing could wreck the beautiful deep creamy taste of this Laksa and the seafood was plentiful and delicious. My tongue is now over in the corner of the room sulking — its going to take a while before I can console the poor thing, it’s heartbroken.

Best laksa in in Sydney! I’ve been coming to Happy Chef since 1998 and it’s my first stop whenever I visit my home in Sydney. I couldn’t love their laksa more and I highly recommend trying it!

I now live back in New York but there was a year where I lived in Sydney. Who would have ever known that this is the one laksa place that I am still dreaming, thinking, salivating over for a bowl of laksa for from this little no frills noodle joint inside a mall. Best Laksa I have had to date. =*)

Happy Chef in Sussex Food Court was not as good as the one above Patty’s Market, Market City Center Food Court for which this review is really for. Best Laksa in town at that food court. The photos are correct for Market City but the address is for Sussex court: not sure which one this is supposed to represent but can’t find the other one. Tried both, the Sussex food court and the Market City(above Paddy’s Market) and the Market City location far outshines the Sussex and that’s not just my opinion. Many co-workers agree, even those who have never tried laksa before just loved it. It’s to die for. It’s my «must have» every trip and that’s every month, several times. Tried many places and this is still the overall winner, big time. I tried the regular broth soup and it’s OK but the Laksa is outstanding. Otherwise, 5 stars for LAKSA, 3 stars for regular broth. Sussex Laksa is good but not as fantastic. They get 3 stars.

I haven’t had much Laksa in Sydney; I’ve been to a few places(including Malay Chinese Takeaway,) but none ever gave me a moment that made me think that sometime in the future, I will think of this place when I think«Man, I could go for some Laksa right now!» because I’ve never had Laksa so good that made me have that kind of moment. Until now. Spurred by the current discussion on whether Laksa was better than Phở, I felt I hadn’t given Laksa a fair shake since I don’t eat it as much as Phở… which I get cravings for. Many cravings. I went on Unilocal to find a place I haven’t been, and came across Happy Chef Special Noodle. Note* — The listing for Happy Chef Seafood & Noodles Restaurant in Haymarket(Happy Chef Special Noodle in actuality) is incorrect… the address is correct, but the name of the business is incorrect. The second review and its pictures are actually of Happy Chef Seafood & Noodles Restaurant in Market City, which has the incorrect address in the listing… or is it the correct one? Confused? Yeah, me too. This place is tucked in a food court on the top level of the Sussex Centre, a small mall in Chinatown. There’s an entrance from Sussex Street and another one from Dixon Street. Head upstairs and it’s to the left of the top floor escalator. The place is really unassuming and like other food courts in Chinatown, it’s pretty much cafeteria style. Rock up, pick your soup, pick your noodle type out of 4 types(rice, egg, rice vermicelli, large rice) and wait roughly 5 minutes to get served. I ordered the Chicken and Spicy Beef Curry Laksa with large rice noodles(came with tofu as well.) The soup… the soup was so soooooo gooooooooood, especially on a chilly autumn night. It wasn’t too watered down, and it wasn’t too rich. The noodles were soft and chewy and the broth was just spicy enough. However, if you’re not a fan of coconut milk, you may want to opt for Asam Laksa, which has a fish base. I’d like to amend my «Phở by a landslide remark» and opt for Phở in a photo finish, but that may change in the future if I keep having«Man, I could go for some Laksa right now!» moments. Check this place out.

This place in the back of the top level food court of Paddy’s Market is extremely popular at lunch time… and I can see why. The generous portions of noodles(you can choose your own) are pretty good value and taste good. As I was coming here on the recommendation of someone from twitter, and having researched it a little online, my expectations were pretty high… which unfortunately it didn’t meet. I love a good laksa and this one was… ok. While the quantity was more than adequate, the noodles were over cooked and the combo bits seemed more like leftovers than ingredients. The soup was good though, so maybe I came here on a bad day. I guess Jimmy’s place as my favorite laksa in Sydney’s CBD is still safe.

Love this place, the service is always wonderful. The owners are super friendly and are happy to customise your meals however you wish! The food is always quick, fresh and super tasty! Its also very cheap, my friend was suprised that for only $ 8.50 he could get a whole bowl of bbq pork wonton noodles and feel full! I return to this place fairly frequently and am always satisfied.

Tucked away in a food court in Chinatown is a little«Laksa do» where you can get the most delicious fresh tasting Laksa’s in the world. I say this with limited world experience, I have neither the Laksa expertise or the travel knowledge to correctly assess the Laksa on such a large and international scale. Since high school, my friends and I have oft frequented this food court and every now and again I’ll say to myself, I’ll venture to a different restaurant within this court, as we all decide what to eat, and I go and I get something which is never as good as the Laksa, so I’ll always be returning and I haven’t learned yet, but I’m beginning to realise that the Laksa is always the way to go. «The Laksa is amazing, why would you go anywhere else?» The range is large at the Happy Chef and they have all manner of meals, but I’ve been a steadfast supporter of the BBQ pork Laksa, the mixed seafood Laksa and the Bean Curd and Tofu Laksa, a vegetarian option. While the BBQ and the seafood are fantastic, I feel there aren’t enough vegetables and the Bean Curd, both the cheapest option and the tastiest,(I’m a sucker for broccoli.) has the most vegetables and hence, tastes the freshest. I’d be weary though, of wearing white when you eat at the Happy Chef, as with most Laksa houses, the chance of a spill/a splash is high and you don’t want to walk home with stains on your pants. Trust me, as the old saying goes, «It’s a foolish person who wears white when eating Laksa.»
