A gimmick sure goes a long way with me. I’m a marketing sucker. I marvel at things that look like other things. That’s why Happy Lab candy shop on level 5 of the Westfield struck my immediate fancy. I mean, come on. The place looks like a science lab, but the test tubes are filled with jelly beans and the petri dishes(Jesus, haven’t used that word since high school) are made of milk chocolate with gummy organisms. What’s more, the whole darn place is color-coded. BRILLIANT. Whoever did the interior design /layout in Happy Lab is a surefire genius. I’m not convinced the candy is all that gourmet or unique; it’s just all about the presentation. But you know what, I’m sold. You can fill a light bull with fancy Smarties and charge near ten dollars for it, and because it’s pretty, and because I have just been blinded by Wonka-esqu colors, I’m likely to shell out the cash. There’s a market here, and Happy Lab is working it.

I came across this new sweet«lab» on my way to Becasse Bakery in Westfield Sydney for my dessert fix and I couldn’t resist going in. It reminded me of my uni days as an organic chemist(seriously!!) when I used to play with beakers, conical flasks, test-tubes and little bottles filled with dangerous chemicals. The difference here is that these glass tubes are filled with sweets… chocolate covered almonds, smartie-like candy, soft jellies. I bought a bottle of «Seville Karma Nutra» which are roasted almonds covered in puff pastry paste(!) and it was nice but nothing particularly special. The real appeal are the glass packaging it comes in, so cute! I might try a test tube next time but it seems from initial impressions thats its a bit of a cutesy fad. A good stocking-filler for Xmas coming up though! Located directly across from Becasse Bakery, next to Chatime on Level 5 of Westfield.
