Martin Place

Martin Place is a venue for all manner of things, and here I am today at the opening Friday Night of Art & About 2013. Great space and great atmosphere :)

The ANZAC Day Dawn Service for 2013 was great. A massive turn out. A great way to pay your respects for those who served for us in that great war in Gallipoli. Free ANZAC biscuits and a hot cup of something are also available for free at either Wynyard or St James train stations, for those train commuters who attend this service.
A Sydney playground. Even if you do not work in finance you can enjoy Martin Place.

I walk by this place everyday on my way to work, It’s very nice and open area. There are usually some random promotional events going on in the morning, the other week I saw a nokia inspired event where they were using the kinect to play 3d angry birds.
Of course the main attraction is the waterfall at martin place and pitt street. This is where neo sees the famous woman in the red dress in the first matrix during the agent training program.
The funny thing is that in the morning thi s place actually looks like a scene from the matrix with everyone in all black business suits marching like drones to their daily job. Pretty hilarious.

This place might look familiar if its the first time you’ve been here… you might be wondering to yourself — I’ve been here before, its feels like deejay and that’s when it strikes you — there’s a glitch in the Matrix… and then it doubly hits you — this IS the Matrix — not just because you’re looking at a bunch of clones in suits which look the same but also because this is where they filmed the Matrix — you know the girl in the red dress… this is where she made her debut…
As someone who gets to wear jeans to work, I find coming to Martin Place similar to heading to a school with «adults» as everyones dressed the same, has lunch at the same time and is kind of scare of the CEO aka the Head Master…
If this not your usual hunting ground you might find this financial district intriguing… and the best part of all is — you get to leave…
This is a great place to head if you want to feel «businessy» and «serious».

Martin Place is a funny place. Not ha ha funny just funny because even though there is not a whole lot of things there it’s generally crammed with people. Actually that’s not funny at all.
Of course there’s plenty of shops that skirt Martin Place and it is pretty much smack bang in the middle of the city so I guess that’s why it’s a popular choice for workers to have their lunch break. It’s a good place to people watch although with limited shade can get quite hot in summer and become an absolute ice box wind tunnel in winter!
There’s always something go on around there whether it be a couple of buskers, some promotions or live events, young kids skating down the steps and almost killing themselves (I sound really old!) or just a swarm of people walking up, down and around. Funny hey?!

With protests and street events now and then, the busy Martin Place is a train hub of Sydney. One of the oldest business centres with many large banking corporations and legal firms overshadowing the often wind tunnel location.
In the morning this is a great place to see beautiful brides and grooms getting their photographs taken in and around the beautifully sandstone GPO building. Or if you’re there around Christmas, head out to see Sydney’s largest outdoor christmas tree, scaling roughly 40 metres.
