Mojo Music

I had such a fantastic time at Mojo Music. The bartenders are really talented, creative, kind, and interesting. The tall, thin, white guy made me such an incredible cocktail and knew so much about mixology and less-​common spirits; it was such a joy speaking with him and drinking what he made. The girl from Colorado who was bar tending was also really kind and friendly.
The entrance is cool… Looks like a record store… Go down some stairs… Hallway… Actual vinyl shop on the left… Then the bar is straight ahead.
This bar and Papa Gedes on Kent St have had the two best cocktails I’ve had in Sydney, by far. I like the atmosphere at this place better, and definitely hope to come back here next time I’m in Sydney.

Mojo is a depression sledgie! It shatters those besser block blues with a satisfying demolition swi (n)g… or 2.
I’ve been here a few times now. Twice on my pat, and once with a crew, and it never fails to uplift me. Nothing restores your souls synchronicity like a cocktail conceived as a unique augmentation to your aura.
This was how the «Frenchman in TNT (trinidad and tobago)» came to be. A decadent yet balanced blend of black havana rum, vermouth & cointreau topped off with a maraschino cherry pickled in Jack Daniels, citrus and cinammon. Lemme tell ya that cherry will put hair on ya chesticles.
If Mojo’s mood-​setting menu doesn’t grab you, then its velvet underground vibe surely will. From bar to booth, and everything in between, there’s piles and piles of smiles upon smiles.
If you need your spirits raised, then head on down to the Mojo, have a chat with one of the lads behind the bar and you’ll be sorted right quick!

This was stop 1 of a Unilocal small bar crawl. We all (5 of us… Hi Guys) met up here and had a drink (or two) before heading off on the rest of the tour.
Mojo is a bar attached to a record shop. Record shop by day. bar by night. Pretty cool. Needless to say, the music was great.
When I say record store BTW, I mean vinyl. Actual vinyl (because it’s just not the same without the hisses, pops and scratches). That means, unfortunately, hipster. Yes, it was plaid shirts (worn ironically of course) and lumberjack beards as far as the eye could see. I’m way too old for hipster so I’m docking them a star (ironically of course).
Other than that, the place was great. Good music. Nice beer (Feral Hop Hog was my go-​to). Lots of other drinks if you aren’t into beer. Good atmosphere. Great company (Hi Guys). Best of all, the prices weren’t outrageous.
I’ll be back.

A good place to meet potentially vulnerable and sweet men! Loved the cool grooves, practically– a — health — food cocktails (sorry but they are farken Sydney prices!!)

Have I really not reviewed this joint yet?! That’s a travesty of the highest magnitude.
I don’t know if it’s a small bar or a dive bar or a music shack or all three wrapped up in one, what I do know is this: it’s impossible not to have a good time here. Impossible, I tell you. The place practically drips (not literally, of course, that’d be gross, I mean metaphorically drips, is drenched in) effortless cool and an easygoing, approachable character where you automagically become friends with everyone around you are rendered better looking and funnier than you would normally be, aided in no small part by…
The booze, hooray! There’s usually at least three creative and delicious craft beers on tap. Last night it was Feral’s IPA Hop Hog, a golden ale and something I forget the name of in between, but the bartender gave me the run down on each, this dude really knew his $hit and was happy to take the time to tell me some stories.
Under 3 people? Prop up the bar. More than 4? The booths are where it’s at.

When I go to Mojo music bar I feel like I am in a really cool movie. It has this ‘muso’ vibe that hits you as soon as you walk in to their cute little record store, which is located at the entry (you can’t miss it). Once you have a browse (I have to look at the records every time) you enter the bar which is just a cool. I also love that it is on York street, right in the centre of the CBD, making it easy to get to. The staff are really friendly and the cocktails are delicious. It does get pretty busy on a Friday/​saturday night, so best to get there early if you want a booth.

Came here on a Friday night with some friends who had recommended the place. Upon entry I immediately liked the décor and atmosphere — obscure albums lining the walls and ceiling, ambient lighting, and soulful rock & roll. We arrived just in time before the crowd rolled in to snag the back corner by the jukebox. I was a little disappointed to find the jukebox is only for show, though. Oh well.
They have some nice beers on tap, but the cocktails were just «meh» considering the price. For 16 bucks I’d expect my Old Fashioned to have a little more bite to it. However, the sandwich we ordered was very tasty. And it even came with a dill pickle slice — very Americana and reminded me of home!
I would recommend this place for a chill night out. But prepare to wait a while for a drink, especially if the bartenders are showing off their cocktail making «skills» for the ladies…

Alright, so I’ve got to agree with Jeremy that Mojo is not the best record store in Sydney, BUT with its feel-​good vibes and all around coolness, I don’t think anyone’s noticing or caring.
This place was number 3 on my York St bar hop last week and it was my favourite bar out of all 4. It’s just awesome. The décor is great, bustling atmosphere, delicious cocktails, great music and the friendliest bartenders! My friend and I sat at the bar and the bartender who served us had great sense of humour and cocktail knowledge… he even sprayed absinthe on our wrists for a laugh.
Both my friend and I were raving about this place on our way home and even the next day, we loved it that much. Mojo, keep doing your thang!

Mojo Music claims to be the best record store in Sydney and I can tell you it’s not. The Vintage Record in Annandale neatly takes that cake. They’ve got a better collection, cheaper prices and the guys there are more likely to talk music over a beer than sell you one for $ 9. I’ve found at least three ‘Holy Grail’ records at The Vintage Record. My tally at Mojo is 0.
It is, however, the best bar in Sydney.
Frankie’s is cooler and has better pizza but it’s an ordeal; at Mojo you get the rock chic and soundtrack without having to set your alarm just to hit the queue at a logistically adequate hour. Stacks of places have better beer lists, and at a place like Shady Pines you get a better beer list as well as free peanuts. But Mojo has a great beer list (drink Dos Blockos!), free Tasty Toobs, and the balance-​tipping bonus of a visible entrance.
There are hip bars scattered all around Sydney, from Manly to the Shire, and Mojo’s just one of them. But it’s also right at the beating heart: it’s never, ever too far for a wander-​in, a sneaky detour or a stumble-​home.
It also happens to have the second best record store in Sydney attached to it. And it’s good enough, with a high enough turnover, that maybe one day I will paw over a Holy Grail record in there — one of those records you just don’t find. And if I do, I’ll no doubt have a Dos Blockos in my other hand, and I’ll look at the two things together, and my work here will be done.

We went to since I left you first and the cocktails were amazing! I had an old fashioned. Mojo we ordered the same drinks and they were terrible! Atmosphere is good but the drinks are expensive, shiz and served with attitude

I love love LOVE this place.
Visualise a basement bar, the front section full of retro vinyl that your hipster mates would drool over and the back section a darkly lit enclave with an impressive range of drinks, ciders and wines to choose from and vinyl stuck to the ceiling as decorations.
To quote Austin Powers — it certainly inspired my mojo,
We only came in for a couple of hours to drink our body weight in cider and it was perfect. Be warned though — it closes at 1am so be quick if you’re wanting to make a night of it!

Let’s be honest with each other: me liking Mojo’s was always gonna be a no-​brainer. But with a proliferation of rock’n’roll small bars springing up I always worry that that rock’n’roll won’t have no soul… Another shot to the heart dodged, Mojo’s is great. Phew! It ain’t quite the Midnight Special (pinnacle) or Shady Pines (first and one of the best) but it is a definite contender and even more suited to some occasions than either of those temples to music & the finer side of drinking.
Anyway, I’m waxing pretty lyrical because I’m sitting here alone ad I draft this. Came for an exhibition in the record shop, felt pretty uncomfortable because it was tiny & the 5 people there new each other, so wanderered out back ie where I’m sitting now!
Nutshell: super-​friendly service
No real food
Moderate-​expensively priced drinks
Great music at conversational level
Clean
Oh and I believe whoever owns this joint is legit, not a blow-​in faux music aficionado! This is because they haven’t settled on a ‘theme’ — the posters, décor, everything sings genuine music lover to me. The 45’s on the ceiling, sure it’s been done before but vinyl has forever soothed my eyes…

Awesome laid back blues rock bar at the back of the record store. Great service, nice vibe. Went on a Monday so wasn’t packed, which was good, as it probly gets a fair few suits. I’ll def go back when the store is open as well.

Really cool bar tucked away in behind a record store in the CBD. The bar is surrounded by the kind of bar’s you should expect in a CBD … shirts and ties, drinking overpriced bottled European beers … but it manages to escape that.
Really good music, cool posters, nice staff, some free snacks and just a nice place to spend an evening drinking a few beers in the city centre. Highly recommended and will definitely go back the next time I am in Sydney.

This place is such a neat hole in the wall (with style) bar.
The environment is so laid back, with such great atmosphere.
The staff was very friendly and kept refilling our free snack dish.
The beer was average priced for Sydney, but if I loved here I would be back all the time.

Love this bar — its packed, dark and noisy, but the barman are incredibly skilled and the cocktails divine.
Food is not much chop (not that sort of place), but I do love the free burger rings late at night!

I have many nice things to say about Mojo…
I’ve been here a handful of times and always had a good time. It’s one of my favorites in the CBD. It’s always busy, but not so packed that you can’t move or have to wait long at the bar.
They always seem to have interesting things happening with the drink specials. Last weekend it was mulled wine and some crazy spiced pumpkin cocktail.
We booked some tables here on a Thursday for a party. They were so accommodating and awesome. We were able to bring our own food for a potluck and that was no worries. The staff was so helpful before the event and on that night. The bar staff was also super friendly and awesome. It’s very memorable.
I’ll echo some of the other reviews and agree, great music (as you might expect with the name Record Bar in their title) and a record shop out front.

Sydney hideaway bars, I owe you all my loving!
Another secret stairway leads you to heaven; Mojo Record Bar, the booze slinging sister of Mojo Record Shop. The vibe is Manhattan at midnight in the 1950’s: records are spinning, ladies and gents are cuddled in the velvety booths, the walls are red, and the barmen have moustaches. I know, I know, that’s standard these days, but still! It adds to the ambiance. .
We popped in as part of Bulleit’s Speak Easy Sundays series, which meant that the place wasn’t speaking easy, but hollering heavy! We had just missed a set by Andrew Levins, and the place was alive with the sweet sounds of Ray Charles and the even sweeter smell of pickle juice and whiskey. Wait, what? Oh yes, that’s right! As part of the series, the sponsors were graciously dishing out those little guys for free! I can’t say I’d try it again, but I’m definitely glad I tried it once!
You wont find any of those «fussy cosmopolitans» here; it’s strictly a fine selection of craft beers, wines, and liquors. The trendy barmen are knowledgeable and will make you up something divine if you give them the chance.
Didn’t stay for too long as we had somewhere to run off to, but I can’t wait to give this place another go! … As long as the pickle juice doesn’t follow, that is.

Woot! This is definitely one of my favourites in Sydney’s CBD. Great energy, great music, wonderfully diverse beer & cider selection. It’s underground, with a low ceiling, but somehow doesn’t feel stuffy. There’s a record store, and then there’s a bar. There is a lot of vinyl being played, and it’s gooood. Of course they’re doing the hipster Americana bar thing, but they’re doing a convincing job of it.
Mojo reminded me of the better dive bars I loved in Chicago. Expect crowds: this place gets packed out even on weeknights.
Sydney’s CBD definitely has its mojo back.

Apart from having an obscure location, the prerequisite to opening a small bar in Sydney these days is to have a unique theme. We’ve seen it all, from whisky prohibition dens, to tequila bars. Even haberdashery has made an appearance. But Sydney’s newest cbd small bar, has it’s own unique take. Their bar is themed around vinyl. That’s records for you Gen Y’s — yes, they existed long before i-​tunes was ever invented, or iphones, or ipods for that matter. In fact, the bar is located right behind much loved old school record store, Mojo Music. Enter the Mojo Record Bar.
The music industry is constantly evolving. From records, to cassette tapes, to CD’s, to MP3s, to i-​tunes — if you can’t roll with the times, you’re going to be left behind. So, cashing in on one of the fastest growing Sydney trends, Mojo Music owner, Neville Sergent, decided to take his love of vinyl, and turn it into his very own small bar.
The record collage displayed in the window on York Street is a dead give away the bar is hidden below. Walk down the stairs and past Mojo Music, through the red door and you’re in.
A dark, moody space, with red booths, candles and ornate wallpaper. It will take your eyes a minute to adjust, but when they do, I think you’ll like what you see. This place isn’t pretending to be ‘hipster’ like Baxter’s or Stitch, rather it celebrates a bygone era when a bar was all about a beer and a chin wag with your mate.
The music played is old school, and it’s played directly from the shop. Don’t expect to hear Lady Gaga piping from the speakers. Soul, blues, funk and garage is the name of the game here. If you ask nicely, you just may be able to choose the music for the bar from the store. Oh, and if you feel like taking your drink with you to peruse the record store, you’re welcome.
The drinks list is not overly fussy. They have a good selection of exclusively Australian Craft Beers, Ciders, a decent Wine List and a few Cocktails, with names such as ‘Corpse Reviver #2 — gin, contreau, sweet vermouth, fresh citrus and pastiese, served up and ‘Smells like gin spirit’ — hendricks, blackberry, campari, citrus, served on the rocks. They don’t do food, however they’re more than happy to order you a pizza, and you just might be lucky enough to get a bowl of tubes for your table.
My group and I have no trouble settling back into our booth this Thursday evening, relaxing and getting right into the casual, friendly atmosphere. We love that we can still talk to each other over the music and that the bar is not completely packed with a long line outside, well at least not quite yet. Whether you’re 25 or 55, I think you’re going to like this place, and I think you’ll feel right at home, which is exactly the point in my mind.
