History
Established in 2003.
The SumoSalad story begins with Luke Baylis and James Miller, who, in their early 20’s, stepped off a plane from Australia and headlong into a life in New York.
Everything was lived larger than life, including the massive, super-sized portions of fast food. Although Luke and James loved the portion sizes, they were not impressed with the lack of a healthy alternative. The seed of an idea was planted.
On returning to Australia, the seed started to sprout and together they founded SumoSalad. Epic, Sumo-sized portions of healthy, wholesome fast food, with a big taste to match. People went nuts (and grains) for it and a healthy fast food franchise was born.
Meet the Business Owner
Luke B.
Business Owner
Luke Baylis started his career as a chef in Ayers Rock after travelling around Australia, without any idea that his future lay in revolutionising the fast food landscape. A subsequent job in IT led him to New York, where the seeds for the creation of SumoSalad were sown.
Luke’s passion for creating a healthy alternative to fast food was sparked during this time where super-sized portions and fried foods are the norm for many people. This has created an obesity epidemic which has significant health and economic implications.
Upon his return to Australia, Luke could see Australians were rapidly heading down the same path as the US and the idea for SumoSalad was born. Realising that ‘fast food’ didn’t have to mean sacrificing healthy eating for convenience, Luke and his business partner, James Miller, conceived of a fast food outlet that sold made-to-order salads that were nutritious, delicious, fast to prepare and cost-effective.
