I was starving so I thought I’d give this place a try since I pass by it everyday. I had the sashimi bento box. It wasn’t terrible but the tuna didn’t seem fresh.

Amazing little Japanese restaurant! I got the spicy teriyaki chicken ramen and ‘Mar got the wagyu beef don. They were both phenomenal! Highly highly recommend this restaurant. The service was amazing, light music playing in the background was jamming, and the house red wine(Cabernet) was great. We will definitely be back and coming often!

This delightful little Japanese joint has turned into a regular lunchtime haunt for me. The setting is small and intimate and they make you feel right at home from the get-go. The miso is the first thing they offer you and normally it’s something you don’t bother with, like a garnish, but you are a fool not to partake of it here. The taste is more like a hot chicken soup with a depth of flavour I’ve never experienced before. It’s by far the best miso in the area and easily the best I’ve ever tasted. The servings here are generous and there is a variety of offerings in that bang-on-a-tenner lunch pricing. I’ve had the bento box things before — the chilli pork with fluffy rice is delectable — and if you want a salad they aren’t bad, but seriously your best bet is the teriyaki chicken don(or similar). These one bowl wonders really hit the spot and I think you get more bang for your buck with the serving. The staff are very friendly and the service is top notch. I love the little coat hanger menus, and the fun wall drawings… It’s those small touches that make you feel welcome here.

I’ve often looked in the window at this little quaint Japanese diner on Bathurst St especially while waiting for a seat or takeaway at the Chinatown Noodle Restaurant located next door. Wandered in on a quiet Wednesday night after work and immediately liked the place, warm modern décor and felt homely like so many eateries you might find in Asia. The menu is quite extensive and from it I chose the salmon sashimi entrée and a bowl of Unagi(eel) Don. First came a small bowl of complimentary miso soup to cleanse the palette. The sashimi was fresh and well presented and was of decent quality. Sashimi quality is often questionable at smaller establishments here in Australia but this was fine. The Unagi Don came out piping out with a generous serving of grilled eel on a bed of well cooked Japanese rice. I enjoyed every mouthful of this rice bowl as the sauce was delicious without making the rice soggy. All in all a good quick meal in the heart of the city and I will definitely return.

Had a really weird experience at Umami. Walked by and discovered they were running happy hour. The guy at the door told me all of the sushi was $ 2.50 that day. I clarified that it was anything on the carousel and he told me yes. Had about 4 or 5 plates, and when I got my bill I was told one of the plates was $ 7. I reminded him that I asked twice to clarify and he said he told me it excluded one color of plates. Don’t see how I would have missed that clarification twice, so he obviously forgot to tell me and was trying to cover up his mistake. I told him to grab a manager. I waited awhile and nobody ever came over, so I left enough money to cover what he told me it would cost and walked off. Not my problem, dude.

Came here with a friend before watching a movie at Events. Its just up the road. Its a small but quaint little place with loads on the menu. My friend ordered the Teriyaki chicken ramen which was on special and I was trying to be healthy and had a salmon and avo salad. My salad came out first and it was a decent sized with lots of avocado. The dressing was nice and the salmon was fresh. My friend really enjoyed her ramen. I have to come back and try the actual sushi to properly rate it.

(Prepare to drool if you look at these pics!!) Yes… even I think I may have eaten too much for lunch… but damm it was good. I am not sure what it is but it seems that Umami has done so refurbishments since the last time I was here. It was still a small little restaurant, but it seemed a lot more modern this time. As I had a bit of time to kill before my mate showed up for lunch, I decided to start off with a half serve of the rainbow sushi(pic ) which was amazing! Almost too big to take in one bite, these little rolls were made by someone who knew exactly what they were doing. Then when my mate arrived I went for the katsu curry set(pic ), in which the crispy shell of the deep fried pork, is combined with the sweet Japanese curry, and boy… what a combo! My mate when for the chilli pork(pic ) and when it was delivered to the table on the sizzling plate, I started to drool. Might have to get it next time I go there. My mate said it was brilliant. If you are coming here during the lunch time rush, be prepared to wait, or simply get there early. Really great little Japanese joint, and very worthy of a visit.
