My husband and I can’t get enough of this place. Either dining in or take-away, the food is always delicious! A must is Ayam Bakar Chef Tan — it’s so savory and you can really taste all the different flavours on your palate. We always try and order new dishes but this one we can’t go without. The Tom Yum Fried rice is also delicious. We’ve also tried the vegetable Malaysian curry which was fantastic, curry puffs, Malaysian beef curry, spring rolls — no matter what we try — it never disappoints!

If you like authentic Malaysian curry and dishes, this is a place for you. I’m a Malaysian. I can tell you that this restaurant makes dishes as good as I can get back in KL. My favourite is the Assam Fish.

Oh my the food here rocks. Wonderfully yummy roti, great laksa and chicken curry. It’s a casual small place, hidden from the main road but so worth the effort to find! I’d highly recommend lunch on a sunny day. As there are outdoor seating with umbrellas in amongst the potted trees, fountain, in a lovely somewhat secluded courtyard.

Excellent Malaysian food and hawker dishes, you can find some exclusive traditional Malaysian dishes from here, like cereal prawn, angel hairs prawn etc. which it’s not easy to have it in other Malaysian restaurant.

The food here was absolutely delicious. The salt and pepper soft shell crab the the best. Looks can be deceiving, the restaurant looks very basic but the food is anything but.

First things first, try the curry puffs — they’re amazing. Avoid the Crying Tiger, because only the most sissified cub would drop a tear over such a mild dish. Other than that, Malacca Straits is one of the most consistent, friendly, and reasonably priced restaurants in Ultimo. Anywhere that has a friendly uncle(I’m guessing) seating guests and checking up on takeaway orders during a busy spell is a winner for me. Other dishes worth mentioning are the laksas(any) and the noodle dishes. I’ve been tempted my the Marmite Chicken, but am yet to take the plunge. Maybe next time, of which there will be many.

Although this place is a little out of my way, the biggest highlights of this place is the authentic tasting Assam Laksa, which is available on Friday and Saturday. I would definitely go back if I’m around the area on a Friday or Saturday

Following our local colleague’s lead for a quick Ultimo lunch before a meeting, we made our way into Malacca Straits after the Thai place he originally had in mind was closed for the afternoon, and I think fate was on our side. It’s an open, airy Malaysian/Thai restaurant that has a little something for any taste. I had the chili prawns lunch special, and my companions went with the chicken laksa and beef rendang, and we shared some roti to soak up the various juices and sauces. Each dish was distinctive, delicious, and inexpensive. In particular the rendang was a big hit. The total bill, including drinks and tip, averaged about $ 14 each. The restaurant is a perfect setting for a casual afternoon lunch, with efficient, friendly service and prompt meal prep. But if I’m lucky enough to find myself in Sydney again sometime, I’m going to try and get back for the BYO chili crab dinner — bring your own crab and they’ll whip you up a Malaysian style chili crab for only $ 20. Apparently there are imposter Malacca Straits around town trying to cash in on the reputation Chef Tan has built with this Broadway eatery, and there are certainly worse horses to hitch your wagon to.
