I love niu rou mian — the spicy beef noodle soup that would have to be a national dish of Taiwan. And I was so excited to see that Mr Noodle — a stone’s throw from my workplace — had such a dish on its menu because it was only this morning that I had a wild craving for it and I thought I may have to venture further than a block to satisfy my nou rou mian obsession. Unfortunately Mr Noodle was a let down. It took over 10 minutes to come out and when it did it was lacking a lot of flavour. It was a weak beef broth — nothing compared to the usual crimson aromatic, beef and star-anise infused broth that makes niu rou mian such a joy to slurp and turns hand made wheat noodles an ocre colour. If it was spicy — I couldn’t tell. Looks like I’m going to have to factor in more time for lunch to satisfy the next craving(what a pity).
