Oxfam Shop is a passionate supporter of fair trade and deals on a fair trade basis with 60 fair trade organisations around the world, who support thousands of producers including Indigenous Australians. Through fair trade we are part of a global movement calling for an end to unfair trade practices. Fair trade empowers disadvantaged communities by paying them fair and stable prices for their work, helping them to gain the skills they need to develop their business, and giving them access to world markets.
History
Established in 1965.
Community Aid Abroad established Trade Action Pty Ltd in 1965, selling goods that had been handmade by project partners. By 1978, Trade Action had 22 stores nationally, with profits being used to subsidise Community Aid Abroad’s administration costs.
After Trade Action was sold in 1979, Community Aid Abroad continued selling handicrafts through local groups. In 1986, these ventures were brought under one umbrella called Community Aid Abroad Trading, which is now known as Oxfam Australia Trading.
Oxfam Shop is the trading name of Oxfam Australia Trading, a wholly-owned subsidiary company of Oxfam Australia with a chain of retail stores around Australia, as well as online sales.
