I suppose it lives up to it’s name. I’m all for the rough around the edges brew pub in the middle of nowhere and was really looking forward to coming but was disappointed. I arrived with a group of 16 on a microbrewery tour and was told they give free tastings. It appears they give one free tasting because when I asked for a 2nd I got a blank stare and a ‘um…’ as she reluctantly poured me a tablespoon of beer. As we got there we also got a spiel that the pizzas were $ 25 if our group ordered at least 5 or $ 29. So an overpriced pizza or a group of 16 strangers needs to decide how much we are ordering. I would barely be able to communicate that effectively with 16 friends. So I skipped the pizza, bought one beer and listened to the live acoustic music in the courtyard(that was the good part). Sigh… Grumpy’s.

Worst dining experience. «Garlic bread» that is tomato paste with some minced garlic & parsley. Ordered the«garlic bread» to come first, didn’t. Half the table(of 7) got theirs while the rest of us waited over 45min… Only for them to then bring my wrong pizza. We cracked it & got refunds but then finally got them comped. So full of hangry rage.

Pretty solid — nice pizza, but fairly pricey. On a winter’s night it’s very cozy sitting by the fire inside. They can do half-pizzas and the two we ordered were very good but at the price it’s probably more of an occasional treat than a regular weekend-type place. One and a half thumbs up?

Went here last night with my Mum as it’s just around the corner from my house and I’m a big fan of a good wood oven pizza. If you’re going on looks alone it’s got some pretty outdated décor & a country pubby vibe with coasters pinned up over the walls in the section by the bar. It was a Friday night & we hadn’t booked. The place was just over half full inside and we got a table easily. We were given a table for four so I could fit my baby in the pram at the table. We ordered a 12 inch with half grumpy goat & half zorba the sheep. It took about 25 minutes from ordering to arrive, but was worth the wait. The grumpy goat was delicious and well presented, however I thought, for the price, a little short on goats cheese. Zorba the sheep had lovely flavors with plenty of toppings but after having had lamb pizzas at Goodlife & Russels pizza I expected the meat to be of the slow cooked variety, not roast lamb sliced then whacked on a pizza… but that’s just my preference. At $ 29(+ $ 2 surcharge for half/half), I think it’s a little over priced, the food could come out a little quicker & the wait staff could be a little happier…, but all in all it was a good dining experience.

I went here a couple of years ago in winter. Sure, it’s a bit brisk and chilly going from car to the front door, but when you are sitting next to a real wood burning fire, face a flush, sipping on some red wine, smelling the pizzas cooking nearby, you will not care that you couldn’t feel your face when you were walking in. It has that country vibe to it with big logs of timber around the place and rickety chairs around wooden tables. It has the flair of character and laughter. And the pizza was fabulous! Must go again soon!

Best wood oven pizza in the Adelaide Hills with a great selection… my personal fave is the Funky Chicken. Team that with one of their own micro brewed beers and you have a winner. Excellent!

This place makes me grumpy, so its quite an appropriate name really. It used to be a place that everyone in the hills raved about, my brother inclusive, he was there virtually every Friday chowing down on their famous wood oven pizza. Not only that, my dad used to stop in here religiously to get his home brew supplies, but now it’s gone and we have to buy our beer. Ah those were the days. The pizza isn’t grand, kids. Not anymore anyway, it has rolled itself downhill without realising the cliff at the bottom, plummeting… If you are coming from the city, I vote driving that little bit further to the Barossa and hitting up Angaston for some roaring 40’s pizza of the Gods.

Being a Beer fiend I used to visit Grumpy’s once every couple of moths when it used to have the best Home Brew supplies going around. Having a chat with the owners was half of the reason you made the drive up the freeway, but now, well… things have changed a little. Grumpy’s still has their own Brew on Tap, and there are a couple of good drops on offer, but the Home Brew store is gone which is a damn shame. More people now go there for the wood oven pizza than the Beer, which is absolute sacrilege! I was there myself this afternoon on a wine tour and stopped by for lunch. I was a little disappointed in the in my pizza and I wasn’t alone. On the bright side, I headed up the road to Hahndorf after and had a beer at the Mill, yay for me!
