Alas, NTC is closed. It closed a couple of months back, as I recall. I’ll miss the place, especially the hugely friendly, smiling, and fabulous barista, David, whose coffee was just superb.

I was desperate for something to eat. The clock was making its inevitable path towards afternoon and I had yet to eat breakfast. Ask and any Time Lord will tell you that there is only so much time in the morning before what you’re eating turns from brecky into lunch. If the clock got to 12pm I was doomed, I would have missed breakfast, something I haven’t done for a long time. I’m all for the late breakfast, late lunch, normal time dinner, but if noon came knocking on my door with it’s sun in hand, despite my feeble attempts at bravery, all would be lost. I was in Alexandria, cycling about and running errands, the clock read 11.34am, I had a sharp clear moment of clarity and finally understood Jack Bauer a little better. Time waits for no man, he knew this better than most and I was just starting to realise it. «The Naked Tree!» I say aloud as I spy a café marked by bright red colouring. I lock up my bike and enter through the open doors. The man behind the counter is extremely pleasant and eager to get me my breakfast before a.m. becomes p.m. I order the $ 5.50 bacon and egg roll with regular coffee($ 6 because I ask for Soy.) In preparation for the upcoming consumption, I go to the bathroom which is a strange contraption,(not bathrooms in general, I’ve used them before, this isn’t the first time I’ve experienced a bathroom) the doors and sink are more akin to an aircraft toilet than one that would be situated in an Alexandrian Café. The coffee arrives and shortly after the roll. It is amazing. 11.57am and I am in bacon and egg roll heaven. BBQ sauce drips from the bread to my plate and I mop that sticky brown sauce back up with the base of my crust and eat the sauce soaked slice slowly, letting it linger on my tongue as the clock finally strikes twelve. I didn’t save the president, nor did I avert any terrorists, but I did make sure I didn’t skip a meal and even Jack Bauer would have to admit that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

When was the last time you heard about two people going into business together by opening up a restaurant? Pretty common, I know. But how many of those people build the restaurant with their own two – err four hands, from bottom to top. Well I’m referring to a little café in Waterloo that I recently discovered. Let me introduce you to Naked Tree Café, which serves amazing meals and fantastic coffee all day. The food at this lovely place is healthy and fresh. Quite affordable, too! For my meal, I had the NTC Big Breakfast for $ 12. It consisted of bacon, sausage, hash brown, eggs(I had poached), roasted tomatoes, and toast. The bacon was crispy and delicious and the sausages were good quality. The hash browns were crunchy and addictive, without being overly oily. Also on the menu are all-day foods like burgers, focaccias, and fish and chips for only around $ 7, and mini-pizzas for around $ 4. Their sweet potato fries are also fantastic, try it with the chili sauce! Overall, I was really satisfied with my experience at this laid-back café. The service is so friendly and the owners are very hardworking when it comes to satisfying their customers.
