This is my new favourite Vietnamese Restaurant in Brisbane(even though it’s been around for ages). I’ve lived in Brisbane for 8 years now, 4 of them in this neighbourhood, and I’ve only managed to try this restaurant in the last 4 months… annnnnd now I have been back 5 times. I know. I should have come here YEARS ago, believe me I am a little annoyed at myself. It’s a cute little hidden upstairs gem, it’s certainly not what you expect when you walk up the stairs. The fit out is modest, welcoming, light and it’s always air-conditioned which is a relief with the humidity of the Brisbane summer. It’s not the cheapest place to get Asian food in West End because it has more of a restaurant feel… not the food court vibe(not that there is anything wrong with that but it depends on how you wanna roll). I’ve always had great service and the food is excellent for the price. They do the best beef phở I’ve had in Brisbane, and I have tried quite a few places. The stock is fantastic. I also get the San Choy Bow, which is super tasty… a little different to the stock standard San Choy Bow, I am used to a lot more celery and onion, but equally as good. With a generous serve of delicious seasoned pork and beef mince cradled in a crispy iceberg lettuce leaf, how can you go wrong? Service is quick and it’s the perfect place to grab a bite before you head out for the night, or meet a few friends for a easy, tasty and affordable meal. 2 Phos and 2 San Choy Bow’s and a fruit sorbet to share and you’ll easily have change from $ 60. Winner Winner Chicken(or Phở) Dinner!

With its upstairs location, Huongs is a bit hidden, but therein lies part of the charm. Climb the stairs from Vulture Street and you’ll find a cheap and cheerful Asian fusion restaurant decked out in red chinese décor. The menu is huge and very difficult to choose from, but you can’t go wrong with the vietnamese spring rolls to start and pad thai, chilli chicken with lemongrass, or the beef with black bean for main. If you have the choice, take one of the seats by the windows – I think they have the nicest ambiance, particularly the table that’s tucked around a corner in a little nook of its own. For $ 15 – 22 per main, it’s perhaps not the cheapest Asian around, but as a BYO restaurant with a great location and ambiance, it bodes pretty well with me.

Huongs is undoubtedly not the best place for really indecisive people, This little restaurant boasts not 1, not 2 but 3 asian cuisines all under the one roof. The extensive menu is split into Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai meals, But the selection of foods you can chose from is staggering. (Its little wonder that it takes our table over a quarter of an hour to decide what to sample.) I recommend getting a plate from each cuisine so you can suss out which one you like the best. The shredded pork rolls and the rice noodles are a pretty safe bet but I can’t stay away from the thai curries(Gang Kew Wann or the«Green» curry is excellent.) Located above Kim Thanh bakery on Vulture St the place itself is cheap and cheerful, It’s always pretty packed, which can attest to the popularity of this restaurant. This place would be great for groups as the serving sizes are generous and the BYO is a huge plus. The meals themselves aren’t the most amazing that I’ve had but for the price and the atmosphere I’d say you can’t do much worse.
