Next Generation Kings Park

Nope. I just can’t justify the price of being a member here. What with the five floors to traverse to get from change room to class, the broken lift, the hap-​hazard service, mould in the bathrooms that persisted even when reported, the very aggressive-​defensive trainer called Jess [who may or may not have a scary, cult-​like obsession with Les Mills], the poor maintenance of the facility, the abundance of non-​healthy options at the café, the «it has no onion» but what do I find in my food? debacle… I could go on, but I won’t bother.
Noted: the older demographic [retired ladies book café tables to play cards on weekdays], the absence of poseurs [hard to spot in the majority of older patrons], the free parking [if you can get a spot] and the exceptionally terrific day spa [separate business called Escape Day Spa — see my review] and the free wi-​fi it has merit, but it aint the be-​all that it purports to be.
Also noted was the general vibe and feedback in conversation with members that I had over my 10 day trial period. There was a lot of negativity. A charge of three months membership to cancel, despite already fulfilling the 12-​month obligation being the predominant. Add to that the failure of the sales rep to follow through with an email to me responding to a couple of queries I raised with her in our initial conversation on day one.

I have been going to Next Generation for over a year now and I still love it. Although the club is much more expensive that other gyms around Perth, Next Gen offers more than other gyms.
Although I am not a racket sport type person there are tennis courts and squash courts for hire which seem to be a hit. With base level membership you get access to the gym, pools and all the classes. The classes are varied including Aqua, cycling classes, Body pump, a range of yoga and my personal favorite zoomba.
The vibe at Next Gen is really nice, although there are plenty of very fit muscly people I have never felt intimidated or shamed for not being the fittest body in the gym.
The café has a range of great foods including sushi and wraps. The smoothies are yum but like the rest of the fare they will set you back a bit. Monday nights steak night is a bargain and really good!

The tennis side of things has deteriorated since the health club came into being. The tennis courts are not kept in good condition. I played there last weekend and there was a hole the size of a sandpit on one of the courts. The line markings had been changed and were not clear. The health club is very impersonal, unfriendly staff. The place reeks of ‘we’re here to make money and bugger you’. The food is stodgy — why do people attending a HEALTH club need chips? Also, why are none of the staff Australian — pommie accents from one end of the place to the other.

I’m thoroughly impressed with the progress I’ve made at next gen through personal training with Dalton… He’s an AMAZING trainer and always pushes me to the next level. I would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to lose weight, become toned, or generally increase your level of fitness. PT is well worth it!!!

Facilities were ok, but found the gym area a bit small and crowded at peak times. The classes were so-​so. The tennis facilities are pretty good, but I don’t play tennis so really just wasn’t for me. After the contract term finished, and I sought to cancel, they told me I had to give 3 months notice. That’s just a clear cash grab — I was no longer under any fixed term contract, but they wanted 3 extra months of fees? Not cool. Also, finding parking is often frustrating as the parking lot is usually full. The change rooms are pretty shabby and the food at the café is just gross. All in all, not what I would expect from a premium health club. For what they charge, I was expecting a lot more. It looks nice on the surface, but when I started actually using the facilities, I found everything just fell short of expectations. There are many other gyms with much nicer and better facilities who don’t charge so much.

As a gym and fitness centre this is a fantastic facility.
I would advise anyone to be aware of the contract terms and inflexibility of staff and management should something unforeseen happen. EG. Loss of job/​income, International transfer or even something as simple as moving suburb. The current management will still insist on the 12month term of contact being fulfilled.

Roof top pool in summer is the best.
I don’t know if it’s good or bad there is a café/​restaurant at the gym that also serves alcohol. $ 12 steak and salad on a Monday night is great value.

Amazing fitness centre which is much more than that, with varied membership prices I chose to go Platinum. $ 74 per month so here’s what you get… By the way not just for platinum members.
Full use of all of the facilities including 2 full size swimming pools which are always kept immaculately clean. One is a rooftop pool with a bar and there are often sundowners here in summer. Squash courts, tennis courts, sauna, steam room. Restaurant/​café. Licensed to serve wine and beer. Free WiFi, daily newspapers, video hire. Cardio equipment with built in TV channels including Sky. Computers for your use although I always bring my iPad or laptop. I work from here, do a hog class, bit more work, have a swim, bit more work, have some food, one more class and head home. Many members have business meetings here, there are comfortable. Couches and tables and chairs. There are Prodigy classes for children, I often see little kids doing Zumba. There are school holiday program’s for the kids too. The staff are always pleased and helpful, the place is always kept clean. Oh I forgot to mention the change rooms and showers and hair driers are supplied! Sadly the café staff cannot make a decent coffee but hey, drink tea!
Well worth a membership and you can bring a friend with the Platinum, if someone joins on your referral you get $ 50 to spend at the café or something to the value of $ 50.
Ok I’ll shut up now but really. This place rocks…

Is it a gym? Is it a café/​bar? Is it just somewhere to relax? No… its all of the above.
As a gym, this is the best gym I’ve been to in Perth. More cardio equipment than you can poke a stick at. In 3+ years, I’ve only had to wait once for cardio equipment at peak time… and that wait was all of two minutes. The machines have TV’s with Foxtel which makes exercise seem like less work.
There is a good range of weight machines and free weights. There is an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, with the outdoor one being on the roof with amazing views. There are tennis courts (grass and hardcourt) as well as squash courts.
The café food is very reasonably priced and quite tasty too. Booze is available too.
It would be nice if the café/​bar section on the roof was open more often and not just for functions.
