Abbaye de Maredsous

Très bel endroit pour se promener. Cadre splendide. File un peu longue pour faire ses achats ou simplement boire un verre, mais ça vaut la peine.

Clairement, l’abbaye de Maredsous est victime de son succès. On est loin de l’idée qu’on se fait d’une vieille abbaye traditionnelle… mais bon, leur bière et leur fromages sont vendus dans tous les supermarchés du pays, donc disons qu’on s’attendait pas à se faire servir par des moines ! Résultat: tout est carré, bien pensé et organisé, en tout cas d’un point de vue marketing et consommation. Pour le lunch, comme pour une bière, il vous faudra prendre un ticket, un peu comme à la poste. Personnel en salle inexistant, on prend un plateau, des couverts. Sans oublier de jeter un coup d’oeil sur les 5 écrans qui vous diront si votre commande est prête ! Les prix vont dans le même sens… un joue la carte du touriste jusqu’au bout, comprenez qu’il faut que vous dépensiez beaucoup en peu de temps.
Il n’empêche que pour nous les urbains, Maresdous, sa bière et sa grande terrasse reste un pit-​stop des plus agréable…et s’il faut jouer le touriste le temps de quelques heures, on né regrette finalement pas d’être passé ici. Les croques sont délicieux (mais sans jambon) avec le fromage de la maison, à l’intérieur, mais aussi sur le dessus, le gratin ! La soupe au poireaux était parfaite, et la dégustation des 3 bières 6°, 8° et 10° nous a donné le courage de remonter sur le vélo…avant de piquer du nez à la première montée…mais ça c’est une autre histoire…

Service industriel: self service où vous devez faire la file pendant 30 min pour avoir une bière chaude!

Longtime fan of the beer so we were in the neighborhood and stopped in. You can view some of the abbey grounds as well as the church (cathedral actually). Gift shop was OKish.
We decided to have a bite to eat (Two beers and a Croque Monsieur). Absolute nightmare. The beer garten is pretty enough but it was raining so into the cafeteria which is exactly that… a cafeteria. Loud, full of blue hairs… just not nice. Anyway, they have a system whereby you order at a cashier up front and the «take a ticket, take a seat». Beers were filled straight away. The Croque Monsieur… well… we waited for our number to appear… and waited… and waited… and waited. Half an hour went by. I asked the girls at the beer counter to help. They shrugged their shoulders and pointed at a huge line next to the kitchen window. I went over there only to find myself butt-​deep in pensioners yelling at the kitchen staff who were clearly over-​tasked and who clearly didn’t much care who got what or when.
We didn’t even ask for our money back. Just lett without eating. This place is a virtual nightmare and the food that other people had looked really average.
Also, the special boxsets of beer plus a Maredsous glass are available in just about every beer store in Belgium. I say give it a miss. Tourist trap.
