Bistro kok au vin

This cute little bistro is a hidden gem amongst all the restaurants in the main square of Bruges. However, it is not cheap. I had a pulled pork burger with airy potato fries, which was 22 euro. The burger was delicious and had avocado, and sweet barbeque sauce on it. However, the waitress was extremely rude to one of my friends who did not order, simply because she could not afford the expensive price of the items on the menu. Additionally, the waitress made everyone purchase a drink, and beer was cheaper than water. On the bright side, the meal did come with delicious bread with two different spreads, and crudite and dip, which I did not expect. I would only reccomend this restaurant to those willing to spend around 20 – 30 euro on lunch.

Made a weekend trip with my girlfriend and it was just amazing.
The bib gourmand menu (price/​value menu of Michelin) was just perfect, regional, saisonal.
We had wild animal meat including dear pastrami and wild duck.
Wine selection was small but good and in a good ratio of high level and medium prices.
Really upcoming star in the well settled Bruges gourmet environment.

The food is excellent, particularly their seafood. The service, however, needs improvement. When I was preparing to pay with my credit card, the server asked me if I wanted to «include the tip on the receipt.» I was taken aback because I am accustomed to traveling throughout continental Europe & have never been asked about a «tip.» The question was particularly egregious b/​c the waiter had the receipt in his hand so I couldn’t confirm that service was included. I added on a few Euros but that interaction soured the ambience of the restaurant.

Un très bon bistrot découvert vraiment par hasard, alors que nous nous éloignions de la Grand-​Place, à la recherché d’un restaurant pas trop touristique…
Ce Kok au vin nous a paru bien sympathique, par sa carte, son ambiance simple et chaleureuse, sa salle confortable et son service avenant.
À l’heure du déjeuner, nous nous sommes régalés de rillettes, cuisses de caille, aile de raie et poulet noir. J’aurais juste un bémol avec le dessert, qui manquait un peu d’intérêt…

Did you know that Hop Shoots are an expensive delicacy that are only available 10 – 14 days each spring? Because of the cold spring, this year’s crop had a shorter availability than usual.
I got them as a starter, and they had a very thick Hollandaise-​like sauce and small shrimps to go along. They were like a cross between white asparagus and mung bean sprouts, if that makes any sense. More texture than flavor, hence the rich accompaniments.
The amuse bouche was a funny litlte piece of fish (again I forget which, herring or oyster or mussel?) in a little jar you had to open. It was too clever by maybe only ¹⁄₃.
I also got the fish of the day — skrei I think? — which had some beef marrow on it, and quite liked it. I forget what everyone else got except for my wife’s main, which was the eponymous «Kok au Vin», which she quite liked but found the plating to be a little too geometric.
And you’ll probably find the same thing, the food is quite good, but a little to oddly plated. The space is bright and modern with an open kitchen. A row of alcohol bottles might lull you into a false sense that they serve cocktails (they don’t).

Ich war neulich 3 Nächte mit ein paar Freunden in Brügge und dabei fanden wir dieses supersüße kleine modern-​eingerichtete Restaurant, in dem das Preis-​Leistung-​Verhältnis stimmt (die belgischen Preise verschlagen einem manchmal schon leicht den Atem). Bis wir rausgefunden hatten, was so manche Überraschung auf der Vorspeisenkarte bedeutete, waren sicherlich schonmal eine Viertel Stunde um. Aber der Service war irre bemüht und super höflich, dass wir alles verstanden (Zum Schluß wiederholte der Kellner dann gebetsmühlenartig das deutsche Wort Markknochen um es sich gut merken zu können)
Und so bestellte ich mir doch mal tatsächlich einen frischen Markknochen mit Salat. Und was dann kam wow! da stockte uns doch allen am Tisch der Atem: Nicht ein Markknochen-​Ringlein (wie man das sonst vom Metzger kennen könnte), sondern ein längs durchgeschnittener Markknochen in etwa 25-​cm Länge. Das sah zwar schon sehr martialisch aus, aber schmeckte absolut göttlich.
Danach hatte ich mir eine diese örtlichen Garnalenkroketjes mit Salat bestellt. Eigentlich war das ja auch nur eine Vorspeise, aber so einen Riesenhunger hatte ich nicht. Ein wenig Bedenken hatte ich ja schon, dass mir da irgendein Gepantsche in Öl serviert wird, aber es kam ganz anders Supersuperlecker. Eine Garnelen-​Kartoffel-​Mischung in Bierteig ausgebacken. Danach noch ein Schokoladenbiskuit mit flüssiger Ganache-​Füllung und der Abend endete perfekt. Was die Weine betraf Der Prosecco vorneweg war nett, aber nicht besonders erwähnenswert. Die Weine kamen aus Südafrika und hauten mich (im Gegensatz zu meinen Freunden) allesamt nicht sonderlich vom Hocker. Aber so ist das halt mit dem Wein. Subjektiv, subjektiv, subjektiv.
