This was our last night at the Amigo Hotel(which is wonderful) and my wife and I decided to try Bocconi since it was raining and we didn’t feel like going out again. Big mistake. We tried their seasonal pre fixe meal and it was all awful. I started with the tuna tartar. There was almost no taste to it except when I got an extremely salty bite. Next was a linguini with a fava bean purée. This may have been the worst thing I’ve ever eaten. I politely sent it back asking if I could have the other pasta choice instead. The waiter(who was very nice and the only reason they got two stars) apologized and said that it would take 20 minutes, but he could quickly get me something easier like a bowl of spaghetti. I said that would be fine. Instead, the chef said he’d remake my original dish, but simpler. I was expecting(hoping) for just some olive oil and Parmesan maybe. Instead, I got the same exact dish without… something. It was equally disgusting and I just set it aside. Next was a pistachio crusted lamb. This was ok, but the only real flavor came from the couple of olives that were on the plate. Meat looked gray and just… gross. Finally, dessert came and I had the lemon granita. It was overly sweet and I could only have a few bites. There were also some small cookies on the plate. I ate one and almost broke a tooth. I hate complaining about food. Especially if I’m visiting another country. But this meal was almost $ 200(including some wine) and was some of the worst food I’ve ever had. I’d love to see the Amigo give this space to a restaurant more deserving of their hotel.

Service was excellent/food pretty good. On our 1 night in Brussels we ate at the restaurant at the hotel we were staying Hotel Amigos. It is a great central location and were treated to a parade of horses and costumed locals on their way to a celebration in the square. The service was perfection. Our waiter made sure we were taken care of and made changes to the dishes we ordered(substituted pasta for potato). The food was good but not as good as the service.

We had only one night in Brussels this last trip to Europe and decided to have dinner at Bocconi. This Italian restaurant is located in the Hotel Amigos in Brussels near the Grand Place. We arrived at about 7:00 with no reservations on a Friday evening. We were asked to come back in about 45 minutes and we could be accommodated with a table for 3. No issues at all with waiting. The restaurant has an elegant feel to it. White tablecloths, attentive servers, people dressed fairly nicely although to be honest I did not feel uncomfortable at all showing up jeans on this very rainy night in Brussels. The menu was diverse enough. In retrospect, I wish I would have tried something with a bit more Italian flair, maybe pasta or seafood, to get a better perspective on the food. For an appetizer, we had scallops wrapped in prosciutto with a tasty glaze. The flavor on the scallops was outstanding, but I found the scallops themselves a bit undercooked. For entrees, my husband chose the beef cheeks, his son chose the baked suckling pig and I chose the pan fried beef filet with spinach and green pepper sauce. The baked suckling pig, served with roasted potatoes and eggplant was proclaimed delicious. I tried the beef cheek and I am not sure what I was expecting, but this was very much like a tender beef stew. I honestly was glad I did not order this dish. My filet was prepared correctly, the green pepper sauce was a nice addition, but if I have to be honest in that there was nothing about the meal that really stood out. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate fondant and passion fruit sorbet to share. The chocolate fondant was a pudding I believe — very similar to a molten cake. The tartness of the passion fruit sorbet provided a nice contrast with the sweetness of the chocolate. This was delicious and the highlight of my meal. The wine list had plenty of options. We ended up choosing an Italian Barolo to enjoy with our meal. The wine was fruitier than I expected for a Barolo — not the fault of the restaurant at all, just a less than stellar choice on my part. Prices were moderate for both meals and wines. I think I would give this restaurant another chance, but would definitely rethink my choice on meal if I did.

Somewhat apprehensive given mixed reviews. The grilled fish/seafood platter put that to rest. Excellent.

Finally tried Bocconi but very disappointed. Great service but I’ve had so much better Italian cuisine in Brussels. Too expensive for what you get on your plate. Lukewarm risotto that had no taste, escalope with too much salt and a mediocre tiramisu. I really don’t understand why the Guide Michelin gives this restaurant three forks… They’re lucky their linked to the hotel or they would already have been out of business.

Bonne cuisine. J’ai bien aimé l’entrée: salade de daurade, fenouil et orange. Portions un peu petites mais de qualité. Service et cadre agréables.
