Meh. Dined at Eetkaffee Multatuli this past weekend and the food was nowhere as good as it was on our first visit nearly two years ago. I thought it was just me with my odd order of spaghetti bolognese but my husband later informed me that his flemish stew was just OK. A total disappointment all around especially since we had talked so highly about this restaurant to my brother and sister-in-law and were excited for them to dine with us there. Ambience inside and outside in the courtyard are both exception but, unfortunately, food really let us down this time ’round. My spaghetti bolognese tasted like noodles with water poured on top of them. The house white wine was far too sweet for our liking and the flemish stew was pork instead of beef and the sauce was too watery. To add insult to injury, Eetkaffee Multatuli is located a bit off the beaten path, nearly a 15 minute walk from the main square. Most tourists would probably think it is located too far from where they are staying to venture out for a meal and up until this past visit, I’d have told those tourists they were crazy because Eetkaffee Multatuli is a great restaurant. Not anymore though. Something’s happened. Either the quality of food has deteriorated or I was just way too drunk during our first visit to realize that the food was just mediocre and the beer selection just wasn’t great.

After cycling to Ghent from Brussels we were hungry enough to eat a horse. Featured on the menu, but our party opted for two of the pork shanks and a filet mignon. I’d definitely recommend the pork shanks. Well cooked, moist and served with a mélange of vegetables and couscous. An excellent beer selection includes local faves pius X and gentse tripel. The wine list is small but adequate; two in our party enjoyed the Spanish selection. Definitely make a Rez. We ate outside which was fine this night, but if cooler you’d want to wear one of the provided blankets.
