Pretentious. We have eaten at other Top 50 Restaurants in the World(Barcelona, Lima, Lindon and New York) and so we were really looking forward to this meal. My wife and I had the Optimus tasting menu(R$ 410 each). The preparation was well done, but the portions were tiny, and, more importantly, they used cheaper cuts of meat and fish such as mackerel, grouper and squid. No lobster, scallops, crab etc. Meat dishes were ok, the flavors were good. 11 courses of single bites for US$ 150 — and we were hungry afterwards.

This restaurant can be summed up by the Children’s book«The Emperor’s New Clothes.» No one wants to say what the food really is… little, bite sized morsels of ill conceived fusion delicacies. Instead the pretentious profess their false delight rather than be true to their heaven endowed pallets. A little honesty would have caught this well before my unfortunately overpriced encounter. I will be searching for a guaranteed level of mediocrity at McDonald’s on my way to the hotel. On a positive note… it was a pleasantly snobbish environment managed by nice, well meaning pompous people.

Best food in South America, and all of our courses were wholly from S America /Amazonia. Great ambiance, food, service, presentation and location in Jardins area. Interesting fact — Take note of the incredibly huge wooden doors as you arrive… they must have been 11 feet tall!

Really tough to rate. This is a top 10 restaurant in the world. Is this in my top 10 favorite meals? Not even close. Was it a unique dining experience with unique Brazilian ingredients? Absolutely. Did I leave massively underwhelmed? More than massively. Ambiance: über cool. Hipsters, jeans, suits. All feel at home. Bar has cool feel. Service: well trained wait staff. When got full, had empty water glass several times. Had to flag staff walking inches past me several times. Long pauses between service. Wine came late few times. Good service, but a bit less than top notch. Service gets 5 stars for friendliness. 2 stars for actual service.(Adjusted for being top restaurant). Pace of food coming out of kitchen sporadic: first few courses were rushed. Last few courses took forever. Most speak English, so no language barriers. Food: I love tasting menus with wine pairings. These dishes are really interesting stuff. Several dishes tried harder to be unique than to taste good. The Amazonian fish dish home run. Ant dish both unique and tasty. Several others just ok. One or 2, although properly prepared, should be re-thought. Wine Pairing: a wine pairing is supposed to elevate a dish to another dimension. 1 + 1 is not supposed to equal 2. Here, only one paring succeeded in transforming the course. Most are great wines that taste good with the course. A few pairings were a swing and a miss. Met chef Atala. Really nice guy. Got tour of tiny kitchen. Overall: expensive, but not extremely expensive. For what you get, not worth it. I have spent WAY more at other restaurants and was happy to do so, and cannot wait to go back. Here, not the case. Nothing was a grand slam home run. Absolutely nothing. No food-gasm here. So cool I came here, but so many better dining choices in São Paulo.

What? Why? How are there not more than 5 stars? If there is any place that deserves ALL the stars, it is D.O.M. Creative, contemporary Brazilian cuisine with varying tasting menu options(the number of courses and vegetarian vs. seafood vs. meat dishes), including several Amazonian inspired dishes with fruits native to the region. Amazonian ants! Yes, ants. They were crunchy and delicious and something I will never forget! If you are a cachaça fan, they have a great selection of cachaça to sip or create a caipirinha for you. The wine pairings I had were also amazing and complimented each dish really well. You can head upstairs to take a look around from above and also see the magic happen through the glassed in kitchen. I can’t wait to visit D.O.M. again on another trip to São Paulo!

Ranked #9 in the world currently(2015), D.O.M. is one of those restaurants you take a journey to. Fortunately, you don’t have to take a second mortgage to eat here as well. With the US Dollar stronger than ever against the Brazilian real, a meal here may set you back a mere 495 real($ 124 as of 22 Dec 2015). With wine pairings, it is only about $ 170USD. My three hour journey began with a platter of bread and butter, a couvert of roasted garlic, whipped cream, and a small dot of special Brazilian butter. Then the amuse came, an ice that cleansed the palate made with cucumber and cayenne, followed by a shot served in a hollowed out pepper. The courses followed: heart of palm blotted with green powder(I think green tea?); oyster served in a ceramic oyster; tomato and gazpacho broth with seaweed; bottarga(salted fish roe) served on top of a baked tapioca piece; a heavenly piece of smoked mackerel that you could smell from the kitchen; monkfish with onions, peppers, and fresh açai(something incredibly hard to source, as fresh açai does not keep very well that most Brazilians haven’t even eaten it); shrimp with selection of citrus; shrimp head with pumpkin; veal shank with some potato cheese side; Amazonian ant gilded(tastes like lemongrass and citrus); whipped potato/cheese in midair; and strawberry with ice cream and strawberry culee. Petit four was great as well. Service is great but language barriers can be an issue as our sommelier described all our courses to us. Pricing is a bargain for the experience. Reservations necessary.

Chef Alex Atala’s D.O.M. Restaurant justifiably earned its 2 Michelin stars and a spot among the world’s top 10 restaurants. I went there with a friend for a tasting luncheon on the occasion of my birthday. The restaurant most certainly did not disappoint… what a marvelous menu that was beyond my imagination. Every course, including the exquisite wine pairings, was delightful. Of course, I had my favorites and these were the hearts of palm linguini and the wild boar loins. Sao Paulo is definitely a long way from New York City, but the next time I go, I will definitely go for the experience again. I recommend this place to my friends. An added bonus was Chef Alex Atala’s invitation to his kitchen after enjoying the feast he prepared.

Ranking on the world list is well deserved. We opted for the Maximus tasting menu with pairings and it was wonderful. Two of our party at food allergies and the accommodated these in elegant fashion. Pace was very good, not to fast and not too slow. The staff did a great job of explaining the dishes in English. Reservation via email from the USA went without a hitch.

Great meal, but the wine pairing was off especially with some of the more experimental dishes in the middle of the tasting menu. Hearts of palm we’re widely featured throughout the meal. Some highlights included Amazon fruits, ants in gold leaf, the cocktails at the bar, and the ambiance.

An amazing dining experience for special occasions, D.O.M lived up to the hype the night we ate there. The food and wine service was seamless, formal — in keeping with the dark décor. The glassed-in kitchen gives guests a view of the spotless kitchen. We had the optimum tasting menu, harmonized with an interesting selection of Brazilian and international wines. Each of the 5 courses plus palate cleansers featured Brazilian ingredients prepared and presented beautifully.

If you are in São Paulo, visiting D.O.M. should be at the top of your list. São Paulo has a reputation for its phenomenal restaurant scene, which rivals the better-known foodie cultures of NYC, London, and Paris. D.O.M. is by far the stand-out restaurant in São Paulo because it offers something the others cannot: its menu demonstrates a respect for the amazing natural ingredients found in Brazil while pushing the frontier of gastronomy. Fasano, Figueira Rubaiyat, etc. are all outstanding restaurants, but their equivalents can be found in other cities. There is no where else like D.O.M. After you find D.O.M.(the restaurant is not easily recognized at first; it is at the end of a cul-de-sac off of J. Manuel in Jardins), you will be treated to one of the best meals of your life. I recommend making a reservation first(for lunch or dinner) because the dining room is pleasantly small, making walk-ins difficult. Though the dining room is fairly small, the ceilings are high, so you won’t feel claustrophobic. You can watch the chefs prepare your meal through the glass windows that encompass the kitchen. I speak Portuguese, but D.O.M. has a wait staff /menus in English if needed. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive; they made sure to explain every detail of what I was eating and drinking, and did not let an empty cup or used plate stay on the table for more than a minute. The staff really exhibits a passion for Brazilian gastronomy, and is eager to share that knowledge with you. I was attended by the maître d’ for most of my meal, who was incredibly knowledgable, spoke excellent English, and was quite kind. As a first-timer to D.O.M., I decided to go with the 4-course tasting menu(which is really 8 courses, including all of the complimentary plates /dessert) and wine pairing. My favorite dishes were probably the coconut scallop and the tucupi/tapioca, but really everything was incredible. Don’t let the ant scare you; it was my first time eating ant as well, and I promise, it tastes like an explosion of lemongrass and ginger. According to my server, many indigenous groups in the Amazon ground up ants and mix them with fish to add flavor.(Now I can see why.) For wines, I liked the Pinot best, but all were well-paired with each course. Here is the tasting menu /wine pairings from when I visited D.O.M.: Food: Fried manioc root on Catupiry and port reduction Scallop with coconut milk and Brazil nut Roasted heart of palm with anchovy Filhote(Amazonian fish) with tucupi and tapioca Pineapple with Amazonian ant Heart of palm fettuccine Carbonara Baby pork ribs in Malbec and Brás manioc Aligot Brazil nut tart with Jack Daniels whisky ice cream, curry, chocolate, salt, rocket and pepper Wines: Pinot D‘Alsace Metiss 2011 — Domaine Botty-Geyl /Alsace — França Perverella 2010 — Era dos Ventos /Rio Grande do Sul — Brasil Leyda Riesling 2010 — Leyda Valley — Chile Curvée Singulier 2012 — Domaine Tissot /Jura — França Via 1986 Gerant — Viapiana /Flores da Cunha RS — Brasil Licor de Jabuticaba Though it was quite expensive(lunch for 1 was ~$ 300), the food, service, and ambiance were well worth the cost. You can order the Executive Plate(which is like ~$ 50 – 60), which is one course, but unless you know exactly what you want, I don’t recommend it. Part of the fun of D.O.M. is trying a bit of everything from what the kitchen(and Brazil) has to offer. D.O.M. has consistently been rated the 7th or 8th best restaurant in the world, so I recommend splurging a bit and ordering the tasting menu. I promise it will be worth it! Chef Alex Atala is incredibly friendly and walked around the dining room to meet all of the diners. The staff was incredibly professional, and there definitely seemed to be a familial/jovial atmosphere, which made dining there that much better. 10⁄10 would recommend to any visitor to or native of São Paulo. I only wish D.O.M. were in New York!(but then again, it wouldn’t be D.O.M.) –Elise, NYC

No need to review, just GO! You will be happy you did, it is an amazing dining experience! I’m a big eater, but I did the 4 course meal and was very satisfied… And I got more then 4 courses, so I guess that helped. My wife got the Vegetable Kingdom tasting and it was excellent to enjoy 2 different tastings together. If there is anything you DON’T like just let them know and it will not be on your plate. Honestly a must do in SaoPaulo! Have fun.

UNBELIEVABLE! Just as I was planning a trip to Brazil my boyfriend and I happened to stumble upon the newly crowned top 100 restaurants in the world list for 2014. Looking at our itinerary we quickly searched for restaurants in Sao Paolo and right there are #7 was D.O.M. In addition to the article I did a Google search for more info, and of course a Unilocal search. With glowing reviews all over the web I decided we absolutely had to book reservations for an evening here during our trip. A whole three months later and our amazing vacation has come and gone, but at least I can relive the experience here by sharing it with my fellow Unilocalers around the world. It’s true, it’s totally true, this is a world class restaurant. From the service to the linens, to the décor, the drinks and of course the food, it doesn’t get better than this. NOTE: It’s imperative that you book weeks, if not months in advance. We aimed for the 7pm dinner slot so we could eat just as they opened. This worked well for us because it was a little quieter then and the dinner lasted 3 and a half hours. So if you think that’s an early start time, it’s not — it’ll end late! The pace was wonderful, the staff was so warm, and if you don’t speak Portuguese well they have waitstaff that speaks in English. A fan of spirits and wine, my boyfriend expressed some interest in knowing more about their drink program. Our server that evening was so incredibly awesome. Beyond bringing us our cocktails and a bottle of wine we’d ordered, she brought out small samples of some spirits we had been chatting about, as well as some special wines. I don’t think it’s fair to expect freebies or extras as this is a high end restaurant, but if you’re extremely interested in the restaurant and their food/drink program, it might shine through and pay off a little to make the experience even more memorable. For me it wasn’t about showing off on their end, it was about offering world class service. From the moment we sat down till the moment we left, we were made to feel special. Which was nice because everyone wants to be pampered now and again. The server knew lots about wine, asked advice from the bartender about cocktails, and was just an overall kind, and lovely person. We felt so lucky to be in her presence and have her guide us through this fantastic experience. We each selected the 8 course tasting menu. Options are limited here and you could choose 4 courses, 8 courses, or a special vegetarian course. We were game for anything they had prepared for that evening so we didn’t want to hold back. Among the dishes were some incredible soups, fishes, and the famous ant dish. Yes, a dish comprised of two(giant) ants! That dish was a fun experience. You’ll surely«ooh and ahh» over the incredible flavors such tiny little ants can hold. The breads were superb, the butter, garlic spread, and various other starters and seemingly simple items were rich, complex and tasty. There were so many dishes where my boyfriend and I looked at each other wide eyed across the table and said«wow!» It was almost hard to contain our excitement over how wonderful everything was. Feeling absolutely stuffed we left just as excited and happy as when we had come in. Just full! I also spent a lot of time eyeing the room and admiring the space. Soaring ceilings, romantic music, dim lighting, and the most incredible napkins you’ll ever have the pleasure of using. I kept saying, «I want pajamas made of this material!» Though the dining room can host a couple dozen people, the space is laid out such that you don’t feel close to anyone else. In the center of the dining room there’s a massive chandelier that hangs over a bread cutting table where servers expertly prepare wine pairings and cut the bread for guests. It keeps the mess and the crumbs off your table and looks quite nice sitting there in the center. Another incredible touch we noticed was that each bank of tables had a small side table between them. On the top of the table your server keeps bottles of water and wine organized. Again, not to take up room on your table, they re-visit your table every few minutes, grab the bottle that pertains to you, and refill your glass. Also, the drawer of the table housed silverware for the various courses. All orchestrated like a show, your silverware was removed from the table after each course and replaced with another set from inside this magic little table. Genius right? And something you could expect only from the mind of the people that own one of the best restaurants in the world. Be prepared to understand the prices here and do the math. Gratuity is included but if you order drinks and/or wine, your bill for two people can reach $ 700 – 800US. Was it worth it? EVERY. SINGLE. PENNY. I have plans to re-visit Sao Paolo again and will definitely make it a point to come back here again as well. Perfect for special occasions, date nights, or just eating an unforgettable meal when you’re famis

I have been to DOM3 times now and wish I lived in Sao Paulo or visited more often to keep going back! One of my favorite restaurants in the world, only behind Momofuku Ko in NYC. I love how Chef Atala uses a lot of Amazonian ingredients to create what is truly an amazing culinary experience. No wonder why they keep being a 3 Michelin Star and Top 10 in The world year after year!

DOM. Currently the 8th best restaurant in the world. Delicious food influenced by Amazonian ingredients, cooked by the amazing Alex Atala. Birthday treat in Sao Paulo? — Yes please! DOM has been on my radar for a while now. We had waited a long time for our trip to Brazil, so what better way to celebrate than getting a reservation here. I have been reading an interview with Alex Atala as part of my Portuguese study, and I really love his ethos of celebrating unusual ingredients sourced from all over Brazil. So mush of the food in Sao Paulo is influenced by the immigrant population, Italians, Japanese, Lebanese etc, it was great to final sample some home grown ingredients. We arrived on a rainy evening and were escorted in by the doormen. This seems usual practice in Brazil, but is quite a novelty for us Brits! Standing at the bar was Alex Atala himself — what an added bonus! We introduced ourselves and told him we had come to Brazil just to visit his restaurant! Seated at a round table in the middle of the restaurant, the service was exceptional from start to finish. It seemed like there were more waiters than customers at one point, and they were there to service our every need. Glasses were constantly topped up, napkins folded, and chairs moved on our behalf. Without asking, I was presented with a menu in English, and my fellow diners in Portuguese. Each course was delivered with an introduction, with an addition one for me in my native language. The attention to detail was phenomenal. We opted for the nine course tasting menu, which actually turned into eleven, not including the constant supply of fresh bread, the appetiser and the coffee and petite fours at the end. I’m not going to go into details of all the dishes… the attached photos speak for themselves, but I will say that the flavour combinations were amazing. My favourite dishes were the black rice with green vegetables and the pumpkin, vegetable coal and tapioca ice cream. The only dish we all felt was a bit below par was the pork belly which was a little on the fatty side, but one out of eleven can be forgiven! The wine list was comprehensive, and the two bottle of red that we drank were both exceptional. The whole experience at DOM was amazing. It’s not cheap(luckily I wasn’t paying!), but the food and the service is worthy of it’s price tag. Thank you Alex Atala for showcasing some of the amazing food that Brazil has to offer.

I know Brazilians don’t use Unilocal but it’s a crying shame that there are no English language Unilocal reviews of this amazing restaurant(ranked #6 in the world by , #4 in 2012), so I’ll do the honors =). My wife and I were their first customers of 2014, as we had noon reservations on January 3rd, the last day of a 10-day Brazil trip. Location is a little off the beaten path with a hard to read sign on a cul-de-sac. The first thing you notice is the giant door, 4 meters tall and very imposing. We were greeted by a team of waiters and the maître d’. The ceiling was very tall with a 2nd floor dining room over the kitchen and back area. The high ceilings served to accommodate a canoe vertically placed right as you enter. The tables and place settings were simple. The kitchen was rather small for the team of 8 or so chefs and behind glass. We asked if the shorts and t-shirt I was wearing were OK and they were fine with it. Since I lugged nicer clothes there, I changed anyway. Later, many diners arrived in even less formal attire including men in tank-tops, shorts, and flip flops. Nicer clothing was the exception. We went with the 4-course tasting menu, passing on the 8-course since we wanted to hit Ibirapuera Park before our flight. The 4-course was R$ 357($ 150USD) whereas the 8-course was R$ 475($ 200USD). The 4-course turned out to be 8 courses already! There was also a simpler«executive plate» that was salad, appetizer, and choice of fish, chicken, or beef with some sides for $R82. For vegetarians, there’s a 5-course Vegetable Kingdom Menu for R$ 242 or R$ 279 with a «water pairing.» After ordering, we were presented with some slices of sourdough and whole-wheat(pão integral) bread and pão de queijo(little cheesy bread). These came with a roasted garlic spread, clotted cream, and a small tin of Aviação Brazilian butter. The pão de queijo, which is a common snack found at every lanchonette and made from manioc(aka yucca, tapioca, or cassava) flour, were better than the ones we got elsewhere, although this might just be because they were fresh and warm. Apparently, this was all part of a R$ 38 «couvert»(cover charge). I think that’s for a table, but we weren’t actually charged for it, perhaps because we got a tasting menu. Abbreviated description of the meal: 0. Amuse-bouche of fried manioc root on Catupiry(the most common brand of «requeijão» or creamy cheese) with port reduction. This came with a complimentary cocktail of Jabuticaba-flavored sparkling cachaça(sugar-cane liquor used to make caipirinha). 1. Raw marinated scallops in coconut milk with shaved Brazil nut, finished with a slice of candied mango and thin strips of pimenta de cheiro(Brazilian aromatic pepper) and cilantro — This was probably my favorite dish, with wonderfully complementary flavors. The scallops were very sweet.(Note: normal forks and knives were replaced with a set used just for the tasting menu) 2. Roasted Palmito Pupunha(a type of heart of palm) brandade with two tiny pieces of anchovy, topped with a manioc«crunch.» Very tasty. 3. Pan-fried red snapper, mini rice with seaweed, olive oil and fish sauce reduction. Fish was small but cooked to perfection. Mini rice was al dente and flavorful. 4. Pineapple with Amazonian ant. This famous ant tastes like lemongrass and ginger. The flavor explodes in your mouth when you chew the ant but quickly subsides. 5. Heart of palm fettuccine Carbonara. Presented as an «extra» dish: papunha shaved into fettuccine shape in Carbonara sauce. Vastly superior(and healthier) than pasta. 6. Baby-back pork ribs with manioc shoestring fries and a Malbec foam. 7. Aligot: potato purée mixed with Gruyère cheese. Waiter brought it twirling on two spoons and then drops a dollop on each person’s plate 8. Brazil nut tart, whisky ice cream, dark Valrhona chocolate sauce, garnished with baby arugula. Plate was sprinkled with curry powder and sea salt. Nice mix of sweet and savory flavors. Overall, a meal well-deserving of its reputation. We took photos with the chefs but sadly Alex Atala was not there in person. If you’re ever in São Paulo, definitely take the 3 – 4 hours to check it out. You won’t regret it.

A comida é boa! Atendimento bom!
