Suya! SUUUUUuuuyA. No, I didn’t make up a new English terminology. In the GTA, the term SUYA only exist in two areas one of which is MJ’s in Brampton while another unrelated restaurant is in Vaughan. As the enthusiastic Alaba tells me that Suya is not the Meat but preparation method using the Nigerian Spice Blend as she shows me a package of their MJ brand Suya Blend($ 6.99). While I browse through their Take-out Menu in this Take-out Shop with Evening hours on Weeknights and 12 – 8:30 pm on Weekends and most importantly closed on Mondays, she provides me some reading material in the form of an article on their shop by Jennifer Bain from the Toronto Star. It was good that she did so because from reading that and watching CTV on their TV it made the 15 odd minutes fly-by much quicker. Suya Beef($ 10.00 even) — Exactly as stated from her Menu. «Thinly sliced Beef marinated with Suya and cooked/grilled, served with sliced Red Onion». This Nigerian Street Snack gives a slight Roast Peanut flavour not too intense. The initial taste doesn’t give off any sign of Spicy Hotness. The other ingredients of Suya gives it a complex indescribable flavour that’s not too common. The closest imaginable similarity might be from the Southeast Asian realm. After a few more Slices some accompany Red Onion and some not, I can feel the HEAT slowly build from the Cayenne giving me slight brow sweats. Definitely considered a snacking item that goes well with cold beverage because it has some Spicy Biltong characteristics. Enough said. Refer to Jennifer Bain’s review for more detail. :P
