Crystal Mall has several restaurants that are only accessible from OUTSIDE the mall itself. Not too many people know about these places. Parking is available in Crystal Mall. Be sure to park in P2 or below to avoid the hordes of Asian shoppers. To get to the actual restaurant, you have to physically leave the mall, go down the central exterior corridor, then around to the S side(by the parking lot entrance). So what drew me to this place? The beautiful(food) smells coming out the exhaust fan out front. My friends and I soaked in the goodness. Mmm… The inside are definitely run by people from China, the real deal. How do you know? a) Heavy heavy China accents from the staff b) food served with disposable gloves along with your plates and bowls. They don’t really do this in Taiwan, for example. c) the dated interior that looks like wooden furniture inside an office warehouse. Rice is free here. Yes, free. Free rice, free refills. There is even a sticker on the menu. Beautiful. One thing I like about places like these is that the food is plain and simple, but the«wok air»(aka subtle flavours) is all there. As I didn’t do the ordering(my friends did), I didn’t get the exact food item names. Cabbage and tofu soup — nice clear broth. Cabbage was just right(not too firm, not too mushy) Spicy cabbage and fried tofu soup(orange broth) — nice kick to soup Stir-fried eggplant with bamboo — eggplant was a bit more mushy than I would’ve liked, but the rest of the vegetables were decent. Pork bone soup — nice dark pieces of meat, great flavour. Garlic beans — decent kick. Rice — free. What more can I say? Overall I’d give this place 3.5 stars. They really need to ventilate this place better though, as you could totally feel the humidity in the air.
